the serengetti arguably the best Safari
  • 00:00:10
destination on the planet which is no
  • 00:00:12
doubt on every Safari Go's bucket list
  • 00:00:15
it's the stage of the Great wilderbeast
  • 00:00:16
Migration and has one of the highest
  • 00:00:18
densities of predators in Africa but
  • 00:00:21
there's a couple of things about the
  • 00:00:22
serengetti that I didn't know about and
  • 00:00:24
looking back really wish I knew before
  • 00:00:26
visiting I want to share my experience
  • 00:00:29
with you it all started here in southern
  • 00:00:31
Kenya I've spent the last 5 days in
  • 00:00:34
Kenya's Masa Mara National Reserve which
  • 00:00:36
sits at the very top of the serenete
  • 00:00:39
it's part of the serengetti ecosystem
  • 00:00:41
and the two parks are pretty much one
  • 00:00:43
simply given different names because an
  • 00:00:45
    international border Cuts between them
  • 00:00:47
I've really fallen in love with the
  • 00:00:48
Masai Mara over the past few days but
  • 00:00:51
it's time to move on and journey South
  • 00:00:53
to another of my absolute favorite
  • 00:00:55
    Safari destinations the
  • 00:00:58
Serengeti seeing as the two locations
  • 00:01:00
are so close to one another I expected
  • 00:01:02
my journey to take a couple of hours oh
  • 00:01:05
boy how wrong I was now something I
  • 00:01:07
didn't realize is you cannot cross from
  • 00:01:10
the Masa stet STI even though the two
  • 00:01:13
parks are part of the same ecosystem and
  • 00:01:15
they're attached you have to go through
  • 00:01:16
the Mara and then go around now on a
  • 00:01:19
drive which takes around 4 hours to
  • 00:01:21
reach the border with Tanzania and this
  • 00:01:23
    is because there's no official
  • 00:01:24
    international border crossing point and
  • 00:01:26
within the two parks you have to go
  • 00:01:28
what's recognized as an official border
  • 00:01:30
Crossing and then from the border
  • 00:01:32
crossing it's going to take another 4ish
  • 00:01:35
    hours to reach Central
  • 00:01:37
sessi the first part of the drive
  • 00:01:39
especially is slow goinging first we
  • 00:01:42
make our way through the Masai Mara a
  • 00:01:44
good tip to know is you don't have to
  • 00:01:46
pay the Masai Mara's huge Park fee if
  • 00:01:48
you Transit through like this as long as
  • 00:01:50
    you're out before 10:00 a.m. great for
  • 00:01:52
our wallets but it also means you can't
  • 00:01:53
stop for any Wildlife sightings which in
  • 00:01:56
hindsight wasn't too bad as any brakes
  • 00:01:58
would make our already lengthy journeyed
  • 00:02:00
just too much on the other side of the
  • 00:02:02
Masai Mara we trundle down perhaps the
  • 00:02:04
worst Road I have ever been on for over
  • 00:02:06
70 km as you can imagine the journey was
  • 00:02:10
slow eventually we reached Sabia the
  • 00:02:13
border with Tanzania so we successfully
  • 00:02:16
crossed the border now into Tanzania
  • 00:02:18
another thing that you should know if
  • 00:02:19
you're journeying between the Masai Mara
  • 00:02:20
and the serenti is when you reach the
  • 00:02:22
Border you will have to change tour
  • 00:02:24
    operators because the vehicles in
  • 00:02:26
Tanzania are not registered to go into
  • 00:02:28
Kenya and vice versa if you bought with
  • 00:02:30
    the tour company they'll typically
  • 00:02:31
arrange for the other tour operator to
  • 00:02:32
meet you and you will switch vehicles
  • 00:02:34
the border crossing itself was really
  • 00:02:35
straightforward I think it was over in
  • 00:02:37
maybe less than 10 minutes just went in
  • 00:02:40
    really seamless and straightforward
  • 00:02:42
which I was really impressed with
  • 00:02:43
    because border crossings I've done
  • 00:02:44
previously haven't been so easy but I
  • 00:02:47
can imagine in the peak season it can
  • 00:02:49
get a little busier and there can be
  • 00:02:50
cued so it may not take quite as little
  • 00:02:52
time as it did today because I'm
  • 00:02:54
visiting in low season so now we're in
  • 00:02:56
Tanzania and we're on our way to saring
  • 00:02:58
GUI so far we've been on the road for 5
  • 00:03:01
hours with no stops except at the border
  • 00:03:04
still we're only halfway through our
  • 00:03:05
journey after a couple more hours we
  • 00:03:08
reached the gate to the Serengeti so we
  • 00:03:10
have arrived at last at the gate to the
  • 00:03:12
Serengeti National Park you can see
  • 00:03:15
there it is behind me and we're about to
  • 00:03:16
enter now another thing that's good to
  • 00:03:18
know about the serengetti is it is not
  • 00:03:20
the cheapest part visiting here will set
  • 00:03:22
you back a little bit there's two
  • 00:03:23
different types of Park fees that you
  • 00:03:24
have to pay when you visit there's the
  • 00:03:26
day park fees and then there's the
  • 00:03:27
nightly concession fees so the day park
  • 00:03:29
fees are $70 per person plus 18% tax so
  • 00:03:33
nearly $80 $80 and then you have to pay
  • 00:03:35
your overnight concession fees and those
  • 00:03:37
are $60 now because the seretti is so
  • 00:03:41
massive staying within the park really
  • 00:03:42
is a must and that's where you have to
  • 00:03:44
pay the concession fees it's not really
  • 00:03:46
an option to stay outside the park there
  • 00:03:48
are a couple of accommodations outside
  • 00:03:50
the park but they're miles away from the
  • 00:03:52
best gate viewing areas so I wouldn't
  • 00:03:54
recommend that so in total visiting the
  • 00:03:57
seretti will be about $130 a day 140 tax
  • 00:04:01
so it's definitely not cheap but there's
  • 00:04:03
a good reason for the price and that is
  • 00:04:05
to limit the amount of tourists that
  • 00:04:07
visit so that there's less wear and tear
  • 00:04:09
on the park and that money that you're
  • 00:04:11
paying for your Park fees goes towards
  • 00:04:12
conserving the national park and paying
  • 00:04:15
for the staff members when Co happened
  • 00:04:17
and people weren't visiting Parks the
  • 00:04:18
Rangers didn't have any work and more
  • 00:04:20
animals were being poached so it's
  • 00:04:22
really essential that we pay these Park
  • 00:04:23
fees although it's a lot of money it
  • 00:04:25
goes to a really worthy cause I wish we
  • 00:04:27
could slow down and have a leisurely
  • 00:04:28
game drive on on the way to our lodge in
  • 00:04:30
the Serengeti but at this point we
  • 00:04:32
simply don't have time I have a meeting
  • 00:04:34
in just a couple of hours which means
  • 00:04:36
that even without stopping it's going to
  • 00:04:38
be a Race Against Time but the
  • 00:04:40
serengetti had a couple of surprises up
  • 00:04:42
    its
  • 00:04:45
sleeve so we've literally just entered
  • 00:04:47
the Serengeti and already we've had an
  • 00:04:48
incredible sighting when we were not
  • 00:04:50
meant to we were rushing to our lodge
  • 00:04:51
    cuz I actually have a meeting a a little
  • 00:04:52
bit and we stumbled across this leopard
  • 00:04:55
in a tree the first thing we see one of
  • 00:04:57
the rarest animals to find is

  • 00:05:27
incredible Okay so we've just stumbled
  • 00:05:29
across a side of Lian there's so many of
  • 00:05:31
them here like more than I can actually
  • 00:05:33
count and there's at least one little
  • 00:05:35
baby with them which is really sweet to

  • 00:05:56
    [Music]
  • 00:05:58
    see
  • 00:06:07
next we come across a cute family of
  • 00:06:18
    [Music]
  • 00:06:22
baboons okay we really can't stop for
  • 00:06:25
    anything else
  • 00:06:28
now after 10 hours on the road we
  • 00:06:31
finally arrive at our tented Camp Okay
  • 00:06:33
so we've just arrived at our camp for
  • 00:06:35
the next two nights it's called
  • 00:06:38
to where come a s after enjoying some
  • 00:06:42
welcome drinks and snacks we make our
  • 00:06:43
    way to our
  • 00:06:46
    room hello we come on
  • 00:06:50
in okay so this is our room at tooni
  • 00:06:53
tented camps we have got a beautiful
  • 00:06:56
large double bed here this is really
  • 00:06:59
soft we also have an extra bed here
  • 00:07:01
handy if you have an argument with your
  • 00:07:02
spouse USB chargings in the room below
  • 00:07:05
we have a nice carpet which is a nice
  • 00:07:07
    touch and something I haven't
  • 00:07:08
    encountered before normally they're just
  • 00:07:10
plastic some areas where you can put all
  • 00:07:12
your luggage and then in here we've got
  • 00:07:15
a lovely bathroom we have first of all
  • 00:07:18
got let wallet sink there a shower and
  • 00:07:23
it's an actual shower not a bucket
  • 00:07:25
shower because last time we stayed in
  • 00:07:26
the S guy we had to have a bucket shower
  • 00:07:28
where we had to like call some one and
  • 00:07:29
they top up the shower with a bucket
  • 00:07:31
whereas here we actually have running
  • 00:07:33
water and it's warm now it has been a
  • 00:07:35
    long day
  • 00:07:38
so we have a lovely dinner before our
  • 00:07:40
    day comes to a
  • 00:07:44
close good morning it's a brand new day
  • 00:07:47
here in the singi so after our
  • 00:07:49
    incredibly long drive yesterday that
  • 00:07:51
ended up taking 10 hours we decided to
  • 00:07:53
have a lion today so I'm up at half 700
  • 00:07:56
    about to head down to
  • 00:07:57
breakfast I'm going to enjoy a lovely
  • 00:07:59
leisurely meal we heading out on our
  • 00:08:01
safari today going on the long drives
  • 00:08:04
really kind of knock it out of you my
  • 00:08:05
original plan was actually to go on the
  • 00:08:07
    morning Safari today
  • 00:08:10
but like doing safaris every day early
  • 00:08:13
starts and then having long drives can
  • 00:08:15
get a little bit exhausting so if you're
  • 00:08:17
    organizing your Safari you'll definitely
  • 00:08:18
want to fracture in a little bit of time
  • 00:08:20
for some rest so you don't burn out we
  • 00:08:23
enjoy breakfast at the lodge before we
  • 00:08:25
head out on our first real game
  • 00:08:28
    Drive
  • 00:08:33
it doesn't take us long to come across
  • 00:08:35
our first Wildlife sighting of the day a
  • 00:08:37
large herd of elephants is grazing
  • 00:08:39
within meters of the road the group is
  • 00:08:42
made up of related females and their
  • 00:08:44
calves of varying ages the herd is led
  • 00:08:46
    by a wise
  • 00:08:48
    [Music]
  • 00:08:58
matriarch I hold my breath as one of the
  • 00:09:01
elephants crosses within inches of our
  • 00:09:03
vehicle elephants are some of the
  • 00:09:05
smartest animals on the planet and have
  • 00:09:07
strong family bonds I love watching them
  • 00:09:10
    interact with each other like
  • 00:09:11
    [Music]
  • 00:09:28
    this
  • 00:09:32
we continue our drive but are soon
  • 00:09:34
forced to stop again as we encounter
  • 00:09:36
more elephants there are just elephants
  • 00:09:39
everywhere around here so we have
  • 00:09:41
already seen one family of elephants and
  • 00:09:42
now we' just come across yet more
  • 00:09:45
elephants so crazy how close they are
  • 00:09:48
well now he's just crossing the road in
  • 00:09:49
    front of us
  • 00:09:51
    but oh my
  • 00:09:54
gosh so close he's just one of many
  • 00:09:58
elephants here can we look over
  • 00:10:01
    here hundreds of
  • 00:10:06
    them on the other
  • 00:10:09
    side even
  • 00:10:11
    more and then down
  • 00:10:13
    here even
  • 00:10:15
more this adorable baby elephant catches
  • 00:10:18
my attention at first I find this action
  • 00:10:20
sweet until I realize that he's actually
  • 00:10:22
throwing around what looks like a piece
  • 00:10:24
of cloth it's sad that even here in the
  • 00:10:26
middle of the serengetti litter is
  • 00:10:28
    present
  • 00:10:30
this Safari in the serenti is blowing my
  • 00:10:32
mind I can't believe what we've seen so
  • 00:10:34
far and there's still so much more to
  • 00:10:36
come none of this would have been
  • 00:10:38
possible if we didn't have a fantastic
  • 00:10:40
guide who is incredibly skilled at
  • 00:10:42
Wildlife spotting if you'd like to book
  • 00:10:44
your own Tanzania Safari click the link
  • 00:10:46
in the video description and pin comment
  • 00:10:49
it gives you the opportunity to get a
  • 00:10:50
quote for your Safari from the exact
  • 00:10:52
same tour companies who I used and who I
  • 00:10:54
highly recommend as the Safari commences
  • 00:10:57
are guide spots were at first just just
  • 00:10:59
looks like a yellow speck on the horizon
  • 00:11:01
    as I look closer I see that it's a
  • 00:11:03
    beautiful cheetah cheetahs often use
  • 00:11:06
termite Ms like this as Lookout points
  • 00:11:08
to scan the open planes for food or
  • 00:11:11
danger nothing of interest is within her
  • 00:11:13
line of sight and so she settles down to
  • 00:11:17
    [Music]
  • 00:11:23
rest the sky is darkening around us
  • 00:11:26
threatening rain in the distance we can
  • 00:11:28
    actually see localized downpours taking
  • 00:11:31
    place it's a pretty magical
  • 00:11:37
site a queue of cars nearby alerts us to
  • 00:11:40
    our next
  • 00:11:43
sighting just come across a pride of
  • 00:11:45
lion's hair there's quite a lot of them
  • 00:11:47
just lezing beneath this tree including
  • 00:11:49
a load of cubs is absolutely adorable
  • 00:11:51
two of them are just lying with like
  • 00:11:52
paws on each other it's just so
  • 00:11:56
    [Music]
  • 00:11:58
    cute
  • 00:12:02
    [Music]
  • 00:12:28
that's not my action going on here and
  • 00:12:30
    so we decide to move
  • 00:12:32
    [Music]
  • 00:12:34
on I honestly didn't expect what happens
  • 00:12:44
    [Music]
  • 00:12:51
next that felt pretty crazy he passed
  • 00:12:54
right by me here that like prob the
  • 00:12:57
closest I've ever been to element
  • 00:12:59
such a big one as well wow evening is
  • 00:13:03
not far away so we start to meander in
  • 00:13:05
    the direction of
  • 00:13:08
camp but we're not finished with our
  • 00:13:11
    elephant encounters just
  • 00:13:14
yet the serengetti sure is gifting us
  • 00:13:17
with an unbelievable number of elephant
  • 00:13:19
sightings tarangi National Park a little
  • 00:13:22
further south from the serengetti is
  • 00:13:24
touted as tanzania's home of elephants
  • 00:13:27
but I must say I've seen even more
  • 00:13:29
elephants today in the seretti than I
  • 00:13:31
did on my visit to tarangi even my guide
  • 00:13:34
seemed surprised by the number of
  • 00:13:35
    elephants we've encountered today by
  • 00:13:38
another elephant but look how close they
  • 00:13:40
    are how close
  • 00:13:43
    yes it's amazing just so
  • 00:13:51
    chilled we are quite literally
  • 00:13:53
    surrounded by
  • 00:13:58
Giants around every Bend is another herd
  • 00:14:00
who are Keen to put on a show for
  • 00:14:04
us as the Sun starts to set we have to
  • 00:14:07
leave the Magnificent herds behind us
  • 00:14:10
and journey back to our camp for the
  • 00:14:17
night good morning it's our last morning
  • 00:14:20
here in Serengeti got up at 7 today so
  • 00:14:23
today we'll be going on a morning game
  • 00:14:24
Drive which takes us South through the
  • 00:14:26
park towards the main gate I'm excited
  • 00:14:28
to see what you encounter on our final
  • 00:14:30
game Drive in the seretti on the way to
  • 00:14:33
our car we come across four maribo
  • 00:14:35
stalks waiting near The Lodges kitchen
  • 00:14:37
area clearly enticed by the smell of
  • 00:14:39
food we hop in the Land Cruiser and
  • 00:14:42
begin our journey South gradually making
  • 00:14:44
our way towards the serengetti Nai Hill
  • 00:14:46
gate in the Southeast corner of the park
  • 00:14:49
this is the main gate of the serengetti
  • 00:14:51
which most Travelers will pass through
  • 00:14:53
as we get close to the gate we come
  • 00:14:55
across one of the serengetti most famous
  • 00:14:58
inhabitants standing before us are some
  • 00:15:00
of the 2 million wilderbeast who migrate
  • 00:15:03
through the Serengeti each year this is
  • 00:15:05
    the largest terrestrial mammal migration
  • 00:15:07
on Earth last year we visited the
  • 00:15:09
serenti in September and saw them as
  • 00:15:12
they crossed the crocodile infested Mara
  • 00:15:14
River now it's late November and the
  • 00:15:16
great herds are heading to the very
  • 00:15:18
south of the Serengeti to an area known
  • 00:15:20
as nutu which is their birthing grounds
  • 00:15:23
in just a couple of months time the
  • 00:15:25
wilderbeast will be settled in utu and
  • 00:15:27
8,000 baby Wilder beasts will be born
  • 00:15:30
    each
  • 00:15:31
day they come to the South to give birth
  • 00:15:33
because the soil here is rich in
  • 00:15:35
nutrients due to the areas close
  • 00:15:37
proximity to gorang gor crater which
  • 00:15:39
when it was an active volcano enriched
  • 00:15:41
    the nearby
  • 00:15:42
soils the Wilder beasts are energetic
  • 00:15:45
feeling sprightly as they near their
  • 00:15:47
    birthing
  • 00:15:54
    [Music]
  • 00:15:57
    grounds
  • 00:16:08
    [Music]
  • 00:16:09
it's not just Wilder beasts that make
  • 00:16:11
    the
  • 00:16:12
migration thousands of zebras join them
  • 00:16:14
    too feeling safety in
  • 00:16:21
numbers soon we arrive at nabbi Hill
  • 00:16:23
gate where we stop for a picnic lunch
  • 00:16:25
within the company of this striking
  • 00:16:27
    Rocka lizard
  • 00:16:34
    he's
  • 00:16:37
adorable as we hit the road there's
  • 00:16:39
still a distance to go until we
  • 00:16:40
    technically leave the
  • 00:16:43
    Serengeti we pass countless Wilder
  • 00:16:45
beasts and even stumble upon a hyena
  • 00:16:47
crossing the road in front of
  • 00:16:57
    us
  • 00:17:12
another thing to note is that this road
  • 00:17:14
in and out of the serengetti is a very
  • 00:17:16
rough road and so be prepared for a lot
  • 00:17:18
    of bumping
  • 00:17:20
around the exit to the Serengeti comes
  • 00:17:23
into view so we're leaving the Serengeti
  • 00:17:26
now you can see the boundary here behind
  • 00:17:28
me and entering the gorang Goro
  • 00:17:30
Conservation Area now something I wish I
  • 00:17:32
    knew beforehand is when you're
  • 00:17:34
journeying between the singi from the
  • 00:17:36
southern gate you have to cross through
  • 00:17:37
the gorang Goro Conservation Area and
  • 00:17:39
you have to pay a transfer fee which is
  • 00:17:41
about $70 per person so that really adds
  • 00:17:43
to your Park fees of visiting the
  • 00:17:44
Serengeti National Park look at this the
  • 00:17:47
wilderbeast are here they are everywhere
  • 00:17:49
all around us now this is part of the
  • 00:17:51
    annual wilderbeast migration with the
  • 00:17:53
wilderbeast journey South to the seretti
  • 00:17:55
this is the Southern Plains here in fact
  • 00:17:57
you can even see sign around this is the
  • 00:18:00
nutu region which is where the Wilder be
  • 00:18:02
are heading so that in January and
  • 00:18:03
February they can give birth in an area
  • 00:18:05
where there's lots of lush grass and
  • 00:18:06
they feel safe look at all the water
  • 00:18:08
Beast behind me it's amazing just be so
  • 00:18:11
    close to
  • 00:18:15
them we've now officially left the
  • 00:18:17
Serengeti and have entered the gorang
  • 00:18:19
Goro Conservation Area to elaborate on
  • 00:18:22
what I was saying before passing through
  • 00:18:23
    this protected Conservation Area will
  • 00:18:26
cost you $70 per person each time you
  • 00:18:28
    pass through
  • 00:18:29
and that's a fee just to drive through
  • 00:18:32
if you actually want to stop and visit
  • 00:18:33
the gorang Goro crater the main
  • 00:18:35
    attraction within the conservation area
  • 00:18:37
you have to pay an additional entry fee
  • 00:18:40
I actually saved money by arriving in
  • 00:18:42
the sereni through the Western ioma Fort
  • 00:18:44
gate as it meant I only had to pay one
  • 00:18:46
transfer fee to pass through the gorang
  • 00:18:48
Goro Conservation Area and not the $165
  • 00:18:52
return fees in normally cost so you've
  • 00:18:54
probably gathered at this point the
  • 00:18:55
Serengeti isn't a cheap destination to
  • 00:18:57
visit but it's one of the best Safari
  • 00:18:59
destinations in the world and your money
  • 00:19:01
is supporting the upkeep of the park
  • 00:19:03
which is undoubtedly a worthwhile cause
  • 00:19:06
there are very few places on Earth that
  • 00:19:08
are as untouched as the Serengeti and
  • 00:19:10
are teaming with as much life in my
  • 00:19:12
opinion the Serengeti is 100% worth the
  • 00:19:14
cost and I know for a fact this isn't
  • 00:19:16
the last time I'll visit but how does
  • 00:19:19
the serenti compare with the neighboring
  • 00:19:20
Masai Mara watch this video next to find
  • 00:19:23
    out which is best
