    all right
  • 00:06:17
we might make a start um
  • 00:06:21
and get into it so um my name's ryan
  • 00:06:24
    dorr i have
  • 00:06:25
taught health at the college for about
  • 00:06:27
    what
  • 00:06:28
it's like seven years so um i've often
  • 00:06:31
not necessarily taught the year 10
  • 00:06:32
students but more the year 11's
  • 00:06:35
and even the acu course which is run in
  • 00:06:37
the past in the third year so
  • 00:06:40
please let me know if anything's not
  • 00:06:41
    working technology-wise because
  • 00:06:44
yeah we all know how it is and how it
  • 00:06:45
can go we've seen this year it can
  • 00:06:47
sometimes be quite a struggle um and if
  • 00:06:49
you have any questions please feel free
  • 00:06:50
to put them in the chat
  • 00:06:51
and i'll get to them um probably at the
  • 00:06:54
    end of the presentation so
  • 00:06:56
um with that said i'm going to share my
  • 00:07:00
screen with you i've got a powerpoint um
  • 00:07:02
and i'll and i'll speak to all that i'm
  • 00:07:03
hoping it probably goes for about 15 and
  • 00:07:05
    20 minutes and yeah
  • 00:07:06
please feel free to put any questions in
  • 00:07:08
the chat there or you can just ask at
  • 00:07:10
    the end if you like
  • 00:07:24
um i should have changed this actually
  • 00:07:25
i've copied the psychology one it should
  • 00:07:27
    change it should say healthier
  • 00:07:28
i've changed the top but not the middle
  • 00:07:29
but um obviously next year as
  • 00:07:32
year 10 students they'll do vce health
  • 00:07:35
and human development units one and two
  • 00:07:37
and when they're in year 11 they'll move
  • 00:07:39
    to vc
  • 00:07:40
in health and human development units
  • 00:07:41
three and four and then in year 12
  • 00:07:43
    there's
  • 00:07:44
two options available now it's kind of
  • 00:07:45
in a state of transition at the moment
  • 00:07:47
and i'll kind of get to that
  • 00:07:48
    um very shortly um and
  • 00:07:52
by the time you know your son or
  • 00:07:54
    daughter is in year 12
  • 00:07:56
    um we'll probably we'll obviously have a
  • 00:07:58
lot more details it's kind of just in
  • 00:08:00
the process of changing our partnership
  • 00:08:02
    we had with
  • 00:08:02
    acu at the moment um
  • 00:08:06
the options there um which is this is
  • 00:08:08
    for the third year once
  • 00:08:09
your son and daughter is in year 12
  • 00:08:11
    which um
  • 00:08:13
will be quite you know there's a couple
  • 00:08:14
of years away still so not you know
  • 00:08:16
it's not a big urgency but there are two
  • 00:08:19
    options at present so
  • 00:08:21
currently there's um the university step
  • 00:08:23
    up program
  • 00:08:24
has a bachelor degree level units which
  • 00:08:28
    completed through a tertiary provider
  • 00:08:31
it is a chance for the students to
  • 00:08:33
    experience university life by studying
  • 00:08:35
    two first-year units while completing
  • 00:08:36
    their vce
  • 00:08:38
    [Music]
  • 00:08:39
in the past as i said it's been done
  • 00:08:40
with acu and i taught that this year
  • 00:08:43
    um and um those
  • 00:08:47
students you know there's quite a few
  • 00:08:48
there's a couple of benefits for them
  • 00:08:50
they you know they learn how to write
  • 00:08:52
um essays which they'll be required to
  • 00:08:54
    at uni and proper referencing
  • 00:08:57
we went to the university in semester
  • 00:08:59
one at the start of the year before
  • 00:09:01
um everything kind of shut down which
  • 00:09:02
was good for them to actually see what
  • 00:09:04
    it's like
  • 00:09:06
um they also got those two units hex
  • 00:09:09
    free
  • 00:09:09
um which is you know saves them a couple
  • 00:09:11
of thousand dollars and particularly if
  • 00:09:13
they do go to work in a healthcare in
  • 00:09:14
    the future
  • 00:09:15
quite often those units actually end up
  • 00:09:18
    um
  • 00:09:18
counting as credits for other things so
  • 00:09:20
i've i know i've had students in the
  • 00:09:22
    past too
  • 00:09:23
um for example one was a speech
  • 00:09:25
pathologist and i was studying speech
  • 00:09:27
pathology and i saw him while he was at
  • 00:09:28
    uni and
  • 00:09:29
he got out of doing you know certain
  • 00:09:31
other units at la trobe even though it
  • 00:09:34
    was an acu
  • 00:09:34
unit he completed um which was good he
  • 00:09:38
kind of moves ahead and he can pick up
  • 00:09:39
    something else
  • 00:09:40
um a bit ahead of time when he's at uni
  • 00:09:44
um and you know the students do like it
  • 00:09:46
so as i said it's kind of changing at
  • 00:09:48
    the moment
  • 00:09:48
um and they are we are still offering
  • 00:09:52
um courses and we might be through
  • 00:09:54
different providers we're unsure yet but
  • 00:09:57
um it does kind of give you give a bit
  • 00:09:59
of an insight into how university works
  • 00:10:02
kind of pathways um you know that might
  • 00:10:06
    provide
  • 00:10:06
    okay before they've finally actually
  • 00:10:08
chosen one and headed off to uni
  • 00:10:10
and it does give yeah it does give them
  • 00:10:12
a bit of a chance as i said
  • 00:10:13
work on those university skills um and
  • 00:10:16
it kind of does probably help them
  • 00:10:17
    transition to
  • 00:10:19
to uni a little bit quicker and the
  • 00:10:22
second option for year 12 if you don't
  • 00:10:24
    want to do
  • 00:10:25
    the um university pathway
  • 00:10:28
is to pick up a new unit 3 and 4 when
  • 00:10:30
    you're in
  • 00:10:31
year twelve so um due to doing one early
  • 00:10:34
that means there's one that it's going
  • 00:10:36
to be a spare unit because that you are
  • 00:10:38
    no longer
  • 00:10:38
you've done health and human development
  • 00:10:41
you then have an option to pick up
  • 00:10:42
    something else
  • 00:10:43
um you won't have completed units one
  • 00:10:45
and two and we'll instead go straight
  • 00:10:47
into units three and four which we're
  • 00:10:48
    assuming your
  • 00:10:49
people will be more than capable
  • 00:10:50
students will be more than capable of
  • 00:10:51
doing given the fact they're already
  • 00:10:53
you know um i guess being advanced and
  • 00:10:56
    in kind of an
  • 00:10:57
um program which suggests that they've
  • 00:11:00
got the skills to do so
  • 00:11:01
and by doing six unit three four
  • 00:11:04
    subjects in total
  • 00:11:05
    students receive an additional 10
  • 00:11:07
    increment towards their atar
  • 00:11:09
at the end of year 12.
  • 00:11:12
most vce subjects do not require
  • 00:11:14
students to have completed units one and
  • 00:11:15
    two
  • 00:11:16
to be able to enroll in units three and
  • 00:11:18
four so there is a bit of an advantage
  • 00:11:20
if they do choose this route
  • 00:11:21
and they do get a little bit of an
  • 00:11:24
    addition to their atar
  • 00:11:25
in the end and your top four subjects
  • 00:11:28
count for your atar this is without me
  • 00:11:29
going to everything about the atar
  • 00:11:31
your top four subjects count english has
  • 00:11:33
    to be one of them
  • 00:11:35
and you do i guess have more potential
  • 00:11:38
top four subjects if you do complete six
  • 00:11:40
you know 3-4 subjects because with 50
  • 00:11:42
of your marks being determined by the
  • 00:11:45
end of your exam in year 12 which the
  • 00:11:47
    students are currently sitting through
  • 00:11:48
at the moment at our college
  • 00:11:50
um you know quite a lot can change you
  • 00:11:52
    know
  • 00:11:54
in terms of what students think they
  • 00:11:55
might do well at and and
  • 00:11:57
in the end i guess the more the better
  • 00:11:59
    and the better scores
  • 00:12:00
the better atar they will receive for
  • 00:12:03
    next year
  • 00:12:04
the structure of the classes um
  • 00:12:08
    that wednesdays from 1 50
  • 00:12:12
    to 5 20 um
  • 00:12:15
the class will run which is a bit
  • 00:12:17
    different to how it's done
  • 00:12:18
    previously and i yeah i wasn't really
  • 00:12:21
aware of this usually it was a bit more
  • 00:12:22
during the middle of the day but now
  • 00:12:24
they've pushed it back to later
  • 00:12:26
students will get a break um around 3 30
  • 00:12:28
    or so approximately when the
  • 00:12:30
    teacher decides however the orientation
  • 00:12:33
    next
  • 00:12:33
orientation lesson next week on the 2nd
  • 00:12:36
of december we'll just run from
  • 00:12:38
    2 p.m to 4 p.m so it's a bit of a
  • 00:12:40
    shorter one
  • 00:12:42
    for that and
  • 00:12:45
what your son or daughter will be
  • 00:12:46
    learning next year so
  • 00:12:48
um there's a bit more detail here into
  • 00:12:50
units one and then unit two
  • 00:12:52
and a bit less for unit three and four
  • 00:12:54
given it's um a whole year away
  • 00:12:56
and i'm sure the teacher will go through
  • 00:12:59
that with a bit more detail when they
  • 00:13:01
when they get to the year 12 but for
  • 00:13:02
    year 11
  • 00:13:04
or unit one health um what you learn in
  • 00:13:08
    the first semester
  • 00:13:09
is the dimensions of health and
  • 00:13:10
well-being um how to measure health
  • 00:13:12
    status
  • 00:13:14
it's using things such as life
  • 00:13:15
expectancy and looking at kind of common
  • 00:13:18
um diseases or illnesses and looking at
  • 00:13:20
    the statistics
  • 00:13:21
behind that um then we look at then they
  • 00:13:24
look at factors influencing health and
  • 00:13:25
    well-being so what determines
  • 00:13:27
or can determine someone's um level of
  • 00:13:30
    health
  • 00:13:31
and and how they would or even then
  • 00:13:34
their well-being as well so they kind of
  • 00:13:35
    look at that
  • 00:13:36
and the next sections on nutrition
  • 00:13:40
it just goes through the common
  • 00:13:41
nutrients that um australians might have
  • 00:13:44
    too much of
  • 00:13:45
um that are usually that are usually bad
  • 00:13:47
or too little of that they need
  • 00:13:49
which that can be good and then it looks
  • 00:13:51
at ways in which we can try and change
  • 00:13:53
dietary behavior and why it might not be
  • 00:13:55
    that
  • 00:13:55
great in australia and the last section
  • 00:14:00
area study three youth health and
  • 00:14:01
    wellbeing that's just on
  • 00:14:03
common issues that impact youth health
  • 00:14:05
    and well-being so
  • 00:14:07
um it looks at things like weight issues
  • 00:14:10
    mental health
  • 00:14:11
    um alcohol use um
  • 00:14:16
injuries such as road traffic accidents
  • 00:14:18
and the students usually do a bit of a
  • 00:14:19
    research report
  • 00:14:21
look look pick one that they like um
  • 00:14:23
usually if i run the class that's what
  • 00:14:24
i'll do i'll get the students to pick
  • 00:14:25
    one that they like
  • 00:14:26
and they kind of do a bit of a written
  • 00:14:28
report on it and they use the statistics
  • 00:14:29
    that they've learned throughout the
  • 00:14:30
    semester
  • 00:14:31
and the factors we've used at times to
  • 00:14:34
come up with a bit of
  • 00:14:35
a report on that and look in ways in
  • 00:14:38
    which we're trying to
  • 00:14:39
limit those issues and to improve the
  • 00:14:41
    youth's health so that's
  • 00:14:42
unit 1 that's the first semester of next
  • 00:14:44
    year
  • 00:14:46
usually it's done with a test a short
  • 00:14:49
answer test at the end of each one
  • 00:14:52
as i said maybe for the third one i
  • 00:14:54
would sometimes do a bit of a
  • 00:14:55
written report as opposed to a series of
  • 00:14:57
    short answer quests
  • 00:14:59
questions and there usually is a
  • 00:15:03
end of unit exam as well this year due
  • 00:15:05
    to
  • 00:15:06
kobe 19 we didn't have that at the end
  • 00:15:08
of unit 1 but i'm sure
  • 00:15:09
if everything stays right that we'll be
  • 00:15:11
    doing that
  • 00:15:12
halfway through next year the second
  • 00:15:15
    semester
  • 00:15:16
so um the second half of the year the
  • 00:15:19
    unit's called managing health and
  • 00:15:20
    development it
  • 00:15:22
focuses a bit more on development
  • 00:15:24
    through the lifespan so how
  • 00:15:26
    people um
  • 00:15:29
how people improve their skills whether
  • 00:15:31
it be social skills their motor skills
  • 00:15:33
    their cognitive skills and
  • 00:15:37
how you know if someone was delayed or
  • 00:15:39
    ahead how that might
  • 00:15:40
lead to impacting future development for
  • 00:15:43
    them
  • 00:15:44
and part of that is also looking at
  • 00:15:45
quite a bit more in depth at prenatal
  • 00:15:47
    development so
  • 00:15:48
if any um if any of the students are
  • 00:15:51
    interested in being midwives in
  • 00:15:52
    particular and that's usually
  • 00:15:54
you know quite quite a bit of interest
  • 00:15:56
to them so it goes through everything
  • 00:15:58
    from you know conception to
  • 00:16:01
to birth looking at the different stages
  • 00:16:04
and and what happens things that the
  • 00:16:07
    mother should do
  • 00:16:09
while pregnant and factors to consider
  • 00:16:11
well if you want to be a parent as well
  • 00:16:13
    that's that's all that one
  • 00:16:15
and the second area of study is on
  • 00:16:17
    australia's healthcare system so
  • 00:16:20
it's looking at things like medicare and
  • 00:16:21
    private health insurance
  • 00:16:23
um and just looking at i guess you know
  • 00:16:26
firstly there's a bit of a life skill
  • 00:16:27
what you know what can you get
  • 00:16:30
um you know covered or subsidized um
  • 00:16:33
    what's the pros and cons
  • 00:16:34
um you know if you had a certain health
  • 00:16:36
condition what could you get kind of
  • 00:16:37
looking at those things for that
  • 00:16:39
um as many students will obviously
  • 00:16:41
probably be working in the healthcare
  • 00:16:42
system so it's very good information to
  • 00:16:44
    know
  • 00:16:45
and then the lastly there's a little bit
  • 00:16:46
on digital technologies which i guess
  • 00:16:48
    are being
  • 00:16:49
used more commonly in health you know
  • 00:16:51
    ranging from things like
  • 00:16:53
um you know like teleconferencing for
  • 00:16:56
    health
  • 00:16:57
um with gps just to um
  • 00:17:02
just have a meeting with them so that's
  • 00:17:04
you know we have to use it a lot more
  • 00:17:05
this year so just kind of things like
  • 00:17:06
    that which can
  • 00:17:08
um we're kind of changing the way we're
  • 00:17:10
    managing our health
  • 00:17:11
as a country so that's all of next
  • 00:17:13
year's stuff there's also a unit to exam
  • 00:17:15
    i should say as well
  • 00:17:16
um that's all the stuff for year 11.
  • 00:17:20
and in units three and four um
  • 00:17:23
which yeah your son or daughter will be
  • 00:17:24
doing when they're in year 11. so you're
  • 00:17:26
a year or so away it looks at
  • 00:17:29
australia's health in a globalized world
  • 00:17:30
for unit three which is really
  • 00:17:32
just more of a focus on australia at
  • 00:17:34
that point we a lot of the stuff kind of
  • 00:17:36
    doubles up from
  • 00:17:38
the previous year so there is it does
  • 00:17:40
kind of build your skills for this unit
  • 00:17:42
    three
  • 00:17:42
and a lot of that same thing that we've
  • 00:17:44
just mentioned comes up again but some
  • 00:17:46
    additional things
  • 00:17:47
we kind of look at different population
  • 00:17:49
groups and compare their health so
  • 00:17:51
like males and females or indigenous
  • 00:17:53
    australians and non-indigenous
  • 00:17:54
    australians
  • 00:17:55
nutrition again and we kind of look at
  • 00:17:57
    models of health which is
  • 00:17:59
how we go about trying to improve health
  • 00:18:01
    um
  • 00:18:03
in in society so you know free from tv
  • 00:18:06
campaigns to local programs to laws
  • 00:18:11
and use and we kind of analyze the
  • 00:18:13
    effectiveness of them in how
  • 00:18:16
and look at australia's health as a
  • 00:18:17
result and we you know we know that's
  • 00:18:18
very good so we kind of use
  • 00:18:20
use that to kind of say something's
  • 00:18:22
working and that's why australia's in
  • 00:18:23
    good health
  • 00:18:24
and the last bit for the course
  • 00:18:27
is um it's more about um health around
  • 00:18:31
    the world
  • 00:18:32
    so it is looking at
  • 00:18:35
    um often quite comparing
  • 00:18:38
other countries that aren't doing so
  • 00:18:40
well with their health and human
  • 00:18:41
    development
  • 00:18:42
and comparing them to australia so um
  • 00:18:45
we're comparing the indi the stats that
  • 00:18:47
    we talked about earlier
  • 00:18:49
we're looking at some of the reasons
  • 00:18:50
behind that or the factors that would
  • 00:18:52
    impact their health
  • 00:18:53
we look at the sustainable development
  • 00:18:54
    goals which
  • 00:18:56
in united nations project to try and
  • 00:18:58
improve health and then we look at
  • 00:18:59
    australia's aid program
  • 00:19:01
and what they try to do to improve
  • 00:19:05
i guess the global global health and
  • 00:19:07
    well-being and
  • 00:19:08
what australia tries to do so that's all
  • 00:19:11
    the health and human development
  • 00:19:13
aspect of it the next bits the more
  • 00:19:15
    boring stuff to be honest
  • 00:19:17
um we'll go through very briefly the
  • 00:19:19
    uniform the attendance and lightness
  • 00:19:21
and transport to and from school
  • 00:19:24
for health um students are expected to
  • 00:19:28
come to school to come to class in full
  • 00:19:31
    college summer or winter uniform
  • 00:19:33
there should be no peer uniform health
  • 00:19:36
    if they're if it's a practical
  • 00:19:38
class with health it's probably it's
  • 00:19:40
going to still be classroom based most
  • 00:19:41
    of the time and
  • 00:19:42
there's no running around or exercise or
  • 00:19:46
    anything like that so
  • 00:19:47
you should still be in full um college
  • 00:19:50
summer or winter uniform and not pe
  • 00:19:52
    uniform
  • 00:19:54
    attendance attendance is compulsory and
  • 00:19:56
this college is quite strict on this
  • 00:19:58
um if if your son or daughter does miss
  • 00:20:02
a class the student must provide a
  • 00:20:05
    medical certificate
  • 00:20:07
doesn't mean every single time it means
  • 00:20:09
    that
  • 00:20:10
i'd say without going all the way
  • 00:20:12
    through the rules
  • 00:20:13
if you miss one class that's fine
  • 00:20:15
without a medical certificate and we do
  • 00:20:17
    understand things happen
  • 00:20:18
you can get a stat deck as well um as
  • 00:20:21
    much as you can but
  • 00:20:22
ideally a medical certificate if it adds
  • 00:20:25
up to them to be say two full days that
  • 00:20:26
    are missed at some point
  • 00:20:28
um that does put it you know the student
  • 00:20:30
at risk of receiving and not
  • 00:20:31
satisfactory as it's probably too many
  • 00:20:33
    lessons missed
  • 00:20:34
um so as it says there if a student does
  • 00:20:37
    miss a lesson
  • 00:20:38
obviously work with the subject teacher
  • 00:20:40
which look as i said it won't be me
  • 00:20:42
and then the medical certificate and
  • 00:20:44
    they can pass it on
  • 00:20:46
and they can pass on the following week
  • 00:20:48
    once they're back and
  • 00:20:50
i know there's a bit more to it without
  • 00:20:51
going through it but i don't think that
  • 00:20:53
just the best practice is if
  • 00:20:55
if a student misses a class just to go
  • 00:20:56
    get a medical certificate or
  • 00:20:58
um or a stat deck at worst and that way
  • 00:21:01
    there'll be no
  • 00:21:02
issues with this um and i know there's
  • 00:21:05
    times
  • 00:21:06
going off past years when i have had the
  • 00:21:07
year tens um i have taught them for
  • 00:21:10
    these days that
  • 00:21:11
there's been things like work experience
  • 00:21:13
and other school commitments that have
  • 00:21:14
    happened with
  • 00:21:15
    with um students
  • 00:21:19
don't worry about that that's fine we
  • 00:21:20
understand that and that won't count
  • 00:21:22
    it's more things just unexplained
  • 00:21:24
    absences that we
  • 00:21:25
are unaware of with the students
  • 00:21:29
what i guess the reasons why they're not
  • 00:21:31
at the college on that day
  • 00:21:34
lateness um if a student is late to
  • 00:21:36
class you're required to sign in using
  • 00:21:38
the um kiosk at the front office
  • 00:21:42
um these minutes will accrue and
  • 00:21:44
    continue contribute towards overall
  • 00:21:45
    attendance
  • 00:21:47
i don't know how this will all you know
  • 00:21:50
    how schooling will be working
  • 00:21:51
next year in terms of um some of the
  • 00:21:53
things we've got in place at the moment
  • 00:21:55
but currently there's only a couple of
  • 00:21:56
    gates open
  • 00:21:57
just so students can be temperature
  • 00:21:59
    temperature tested on their weigh-in
  • 00:22:01
and we do need you know students to do
  • 00:22:03
that so it is important if
  • 00:22:05
they are late you're coming through the
  • 00:22:06
front desk you do sign in with a lady at
  • 00:22:08
the off in the office will
  • 00:22:10
temperature test is to make sure
  • 00:22:12
    everything's all good um
  • 00:22:14
and yeah and that way it's all logged
  • 00:22:16
and the student can go to class
  • 00:22:19
and lastly for transport students to
  • 00:22:22
organize their own method of transport
  • 00:22:23
    to and from the college
  • 00:22:24
i know in saying all within the past
  • 00:22:26
    they've had a bus and that's fine
  • 00:22:28
but students yeah could take public
  • 00:22:30
transport or being dropped off and
  • 00:22:32
    picked up but that's
  • 00:22:33
    your responsibility for that
  • 00:22:37
and if you do have any further questions
  • 00:22:39
    as i said i don't i won't necessarily be
  • 00:22:40
teaching you to sign a door next year
  • 00:22:41
    but i've often taught
  • 00:22:43
the year where they're in year 11 and
  • 00:22:45
    they're doing units 3 and 4. i've had
  • 00:22:47
    that for the last
  • 00:22:48
three or four years at least so if you
  • 00:22:50
    do have any questions
  • 00:22:52
you can contact me there if there's my
  • 00:22:54
    email
  • 00:22:55
that might be easiest or if you want to
  • 00:22:58
discuss anything and you can call me up
  • 00:23:00
on the school's number there 9361 double
  • 00:23:02
zero double zero i'll be more than happy
  • 00:23:05
to get back to you and that's all
  • 00:23:08
    um are there any questions
  • 00:23:14
you'd like to put in the q a
  • 00:23:25
all right it doesn't seem like it all
  • 00:23:27
right well if you do have any questions
  • 00:23:28
i said my emails they're more than happy
  • 00:23:29
    to help
  • 00:23:30
um thanks for attending tonight i hope
  • 00:23:33
    that helps and
  • 00:23:34
um you know clears up any questions you
  • 00:23:37
    might have
  • 00:23:38
um i'm sure if they've got your
  • 00:23:40
standards gonna need questions next week
  • 00:23:42
they can just ask their subject teacher
  • 00:23:44
next wednesday um when they'll be in
  • 00:23:46
i'm sure they'll be happy to help but
  • 00:23:48
yeah thanks for attending and have a
  • 00:23:50
    good evening
