    a little bit about the company i work

    and the kind of activities we got up

    throughout the year

    so first what is a blockchain uh i won't

    dwell on this too much a lot of people

    are familiar or have some some ideas but

    basically it's a ledger
  • 00:17:01
    a distributed ledger of data that's
  • 00:17:03
    shared among
  • 00:17:05
    nodes or computers that are connected to
  • 00:17:07
    the internet it's secured by
  • 00:17:09
    cryptography
  • 00:17:10
    which we'll touch on a little bit in a
  • 00:17:11
    while and then there's a couple of
  • 00:17:13
    different ways that that cryptography is
  • 00:17:14
    enforced
  • 00:17:15
    so the kind of leading implementations
  • 00:17:18
    that we have in the industry now
  • 00:17:19
    are proof of work which involves mining
  • 00:17:21
    and hashing algorithms and then we also
  • 00:17:23
    have proof of stake which is
  • 00:17:25
    another kind of incumbent technology
  • 00:17:27
    that's starting to gain a lot of
  • 00:17:29
    traction with
  • 00:17:29
    the newer protocols so the main thing
  • 00:17:32
    that a blockchain does is it keeps
  • 00:17:34
    track of information so you've got like
  • 00:17:35
    accounts and transactions and assets and
  • 00:17:38
    the kind of
  • 00:17:38
    how those move around the network and
  • 00:17:40
    get passed around between different
  • 00:17:41
    participants
  • 00:17:42
    so back in 2009 bitcoin was the first
  • 00:17:46
    um protocol that kind of pioneered this
  • 00:17:48
    technology
  • 00:17:49
    uh it was a cryptocurrency i'm sure many
  • 00:17:51
    people have heard about it
  • 00:17:52
    um during the course you learn a lot
  • 00:17:54
    about it which is very interesting as
  • 00:17:56
    well
  • 00:17:57
    um so there's two types of networks that
  • 00:17:59
    are kind of doing
  • 00:18:00
    um that are working through the industry
  • 00:18:01
    at the moment you've got the public
  • 00:18:03
    permissionless networks like bitcoin and
  • 00:18:05
    ethereum and then you've got the kind of
  • 00:18:07
    private networks that are
  • 00:18:08
    um kind of more industry uh developed
  • 00:18:11
    or suitable for industry development and
  • 00:18:15
    a good example of this would be
  • 00:18:16
    something like hyperledger fabric which
  • 00:18:17
    is
  • 00:18:18
    um mostly developed by a consortium of
  • 00:18:21
    different companies
  • 00:18:22
    ibm being one of the leading leading
  • 00:18:24
    companies in that consortium
  • 00:18:27
    so there's kind of a few different
  • 00:18:28
    places where where crypto
  • 00:18:30
    and blockchain technology is used um
  • 00:18:33
    we're starting to see a lot of interest
  • 00:18:34
    in
  • 00:18:35
    enterprise use cases and certainly with
  • 00:18:37
    the company i work for we're getting a
  • 00:18:38
    lot of interest from enterprises
  • 00:18:40
    some of the good examples would be
  • 00:18:42
    something like supply chain um tracking
  • 00:18:44
    of data
  • 00:18:45
    um and and supply chain um components as
  • 00:18:48
    they move throughout
  • 00:18:50
    the world and get shipped and and things
  • 00:18:53
    like this
  • 00:18:54
    and then there's another emerging thing
  • 00:18:55
    that is starting to gain a lot of
  • 00:18:57
    traction as well and this is um
  • 00:18:58
    gaps or decentralized applications which
  • 00:19:01
    run on
  • 00:19:02
    smart contract technology and deployed
  • 00:19:04
    to blockchains like ethereum
  • 00:19:06
    or algorithm so what do i do
  • 00:19:10
    um so i'm the lead engineer a blockchain
  • 00:19:14
    engineer in a company called blockdemon
  • 00:19:16
    we do
  • 00:19:17
    blockchain nodes as a service so we have
  • 00:19:20
    a lot of different
  • 00:19:21
    protocols that we've onboarded onto our
  • 00:19:23
    platform and you can call us at
  • 00:19:24
    blockchain as a service company or a
  • 00:19:26
    node as a service company
  • 00:19:28
    currently we've about 20 protocols maybe
  • 00:19:31
    a few more
  • 00:19:32
    we try and work with most of the big
  • 00:19:34
    protocols out there a lot of
  • 00:19:36
    our customers are either developers or
  • 00:19:40
    industry kind of people who want to
  • 00:19:42
    experiment with certain protocols
  • 00:19:43
    we work a lot with large investment
  • 00:19:45
    funds
  • 00:19:46
    and we also run our own public validator
  • 00:19:50
    nodes on these networks
  • 00:19:52
    so we have quite a lot of nodes i think
  • 00:19:55
    over a thousand nodes
  • 00:19:57
    running in a multi-cloud environment
  • 00:19:59
    distributed all
  • 00:20:00
    across the different regions and
  • 00:20:01
    different clouds in the world we also
  • 00:20:03
    have
  • 00:20:04
    a data center with some dedicated
  • 00:20:05
    machines for various
  • 00:20:07
    um secure features that we have to
  • 00:20:10
    implement with a lot of these protocols
  • 00:20:12
    and then we also have a couple of other
  • 00:20:14
    projects that we're working on so we
  • 00:20:15
    have
  • 00:20:15
    ubiquity which is a data api that kind
  • 00:20:18
    of
  • 00:20:19
    uh sits across multiple blockchains and
  • 00:20:22
    offers
  • 00:20:22
    a unique uh sorry um a consistent
  • 00:20:26
    api experience across multiple
  • 00:20:28
    blockchains so we do
  • 00:20:29
    all the heavy lifting of converting to
  • 00:20:31
    the different apis that each of the
  • 00:20:32
    blockchains use
  • 00:20:34
    and we're currently nearing
  • 00:20:37
    production readiness for that and we
  • 00:20:39
    also have another
  • 00:20:40
    um project called the blockchain package
  • 00:20:43
    manager or bpm as we like to call it
  • 00:20:45
    internally

    the idea here is that a developer or an
  • 00:20:48
    organization
  • 00:20:49
    can use a um a tool similar to

    npm for the node.js ecosystem but to

    deploy

    blockchain infrastructure either on
  • 00:20:58
    their laptop or in their own data center

    in their own cloud servers and the idea

    there is to have a unified experience

    across multiple blockchains

    so currently we have a lot of

    employees in ireland but i say a lot we

    have several employees in ireland

    we're the european base um and uh we're

    currently hiring for a lot of positions

    uh and it's essential for us to have a

    skilled resource tool where we continue

    to um to bring

    developers in who can contribute to to

    what we need

    so that's kind of what i what i

    currently work at

    but how does this relate to the

    blockchain masters course so

    the msc course is a well-rounded course
  • 00:21:42
    so the students who participate in it
  • 00:21:44
    get a lot of exposure to a lot of
  • 00:21:45
    different technologies
  • 00:21:46
    and a lot of different topics and as
  • 00:21:48
    irene showed earlier there's multiple
  • 00:21:50
    different
  • 00:21:51
    experi different modules throughout the
  • 00:21:54
    year
  • 00:21:55
    and the ones that we basically that i
  • 00:21:57
    participated in this year were
  • 00:21:58
    cryptography
  • 00:21:59
    uh distributed ledger technologies cloud
  • 00:22:01
    systems and data processing
  • 00:22:03
    and then some professional skills and
  • 00:22:05
    ethics ethics and law
  • 00:22:07
    so this is one of the more interesting
  • 00:22:09
    topics throughout my career i've never
  • 00:22:11
    really considered ethics with the
  • 00:22:14
    systems i've been building
  • 00:22:15
    and also uh the laws um you know this
  • 00:22:18
    the
  • 00:22:18
    my previous software experience was in a
  • 00:22:20
    well-defined industry in the travel
  • 00:22:21
    industry
  • 00:22:22
    um and you know as an engineer i didn't
  • 00:22:24
    really have to think of
  • 00:22:26
    the my the code i developed could you
  • 00:22:28
    know have some
  • 00:22:29
    law that i wasn't aware of um so this is
  • 00:22:31
    very interesting and certainly for
  • 00:22:34
    the students that are coming up through
  • 00:22:36
    the ranks working in
  • 00:22:37
    the this emerging technology space of
  • 00:22:40
    blockchain and cryptocurrencies it's
  • 00:22:41
    very good that they have
  • 00:22:42
    an understanding of the law and also the
  • 00:22:45
    professional ethics associated with the
  • 00:22:47
    systems they may build
  • 00:22:48
    um some other interesting things that we
  • 00:22:49
    did throughout the year was we worked a
  • 00:22:51
    lot with the cloud
  • 00:22:52
    so we built some systems that worked in
  • 00:22:54
    aws or google
  • 00:22:57
    uh using technologies like docker and
  • 00:22:59
    kubernetes that allowed us to
  • 00:23:02
    build some applications and deploy them
  • 00:23:03
    using the the skills that we learned in
  • 00:23:05
    the class
  • 00:23:07
    it's also beneficial for us to under to
  • 00:23:10
    understand
  • 00:23:11
    and and also to play around with some of
  • 00:23:13
    the cryptographic
  • 00:23:14
    systems that underpin the whole
  • 00:23:16
    blockchain space throughout my career
  • 00:23:18
    um i've not come from a cryptography
  • 00:23:20
    background i've come from a software
  • 00:23:22
    engineering
  • 00:23:22
    and devops background so to actually
  • 00:23:25
    understand the cryptography that holds
  • 00:23:27
    all the blockchain
  • 00:23:29
    software that i work with every day
  • 00:23:30
    together was very important for my
  • 00:23:32
    career
  • 00:23:33
    and gave me a good foundation of the
  • 00:23:35
    understanding of the integral parts of a
  • 00:23:36
    blockchain cryptosystem
  • 00:23:39
    um yes so throughout the course you get
  • 00:23:42
    to experience a lot
  • 00:23:43
    uh experiment a lot with some of the
  • 00:23:45
    innovative technologies uh like i said
  • 00:23:47
    the docker and kubernetes and these are
  • 00:23:49
    essential to um
  • 00:23:51
    kind of moving the blockchain system
  • 00:23:52
    forward as as systems that
  • 00:23:54
    the engineers build become kind of uh
  • 00:23:57
    you know
  • 00:23:58
    part of the standard software developer
  • 00:24:01
    stack going forward
  • 00:24:02
    um and the msc course will hopefully
  • 00:24:06
    produce a lot of
  • 00:24:07
    talented engineers that have a lot of
  • 00:24:08
    experience in the
  • 00:24:10
    not just blockchain but also the
  • 00:24:12
    surrounding
  • 00:24:14
    technologies associated with it so
  • 00:24:17
    here's an example of one of the
  • 00:24:18
    the assignments that we worked on um so
  • 00:24:20
    this was a data processing assignment
  • 00:24:22
    that i built
  • 00:24:23
    using different data processing
  • 00:24:26
    techniques that i'd learned throughout
  • 00:24:27
    the course
  • 00:24:28
    um basically it was a it scraped the
  • 00:24:30
    data set from the internet
  • 00:24:32
    of the covet 19 cases did some
  • 00:24:34
    processing on it
  • 00:24:35
    and then you know built a dashboard
  • 00:24:37
    technology that served up kind of real
  • 00:24:39
    time
  • 00:24:40
    information and then basically automated
  • 00:24:43
    how it all worked
  • 00:24:43
    so this was a great assignment to work
  • 00:24:45
    on and data processing is not something
  • 00:24:47
    i've done in my career today
  • 00:24:48
    so it's very interesting to use um cloud
  • 00:24:51
    technologies
  • 00:24:52
    uh data processing uh technologies
  • 00:24:55
    and uh you know uh things that i had a
  • 00:24:57
    lot of experience with was which was web
  • 00:24:59
    technology
  • 00:25:00
    so very interesting and going forward in
  • 00:25:02
    the blockchain space it's
  • 00:25:03
    you know the blockchains are full of
  • 00:25:05
    data so it's important that we can
  • 00:25:07
    use the tools and systems like this to
  • 00:25:09
    aggregate data present them
  • 00:25:11
    and and show them to uh you know people
  • 00:25:13
    who need to
  • 00:25:14
    perform some analytics or have some
  • 00:25:16
    interaction with the blockchain
  • 00:25:18
    so block i guess you know coming out of
  • 00:25:21
    the course
  • 00:25:22
    what kind of things could you expect to
  • 00:25:24
    work on um using
  • 00:25:26
    my the company i work for a blockchain

    as an experience we're constantly
  • 00:25:29
    looking for engineers who have
  • 00:25:31
    devops experience data analytics
  • 00:25:33
    experience architects who can kind of
  • 00:25:35
    envisage how
  • 00:25:36
    these new blockchain systems can all
  • 00:25:38
    work together with existing software
  • 00:25:39
    stacks
  • 00:25:40
    and as irene said earlier uh security
  • 00:25:43
    security is a very important part of
  • 00:25:44
    blockchains
  • 00:25:45
    especially if there's a financial
  • 00:25:47
    implications uh like bitcoin or
  • 00:25:50
    ethereum or any um value associated with
  • 00:25:53
    the systems that are being built
  • 00:25:55
    and there's a lot of document documented
  • 00:25:57
    cases of hacks or
  • 00:25:59
    exploits where people have uh left the
  • 00:26:01
    back door open and
  • 00:26:02
    funds or something like this have been
  • 00:26:03
    trained from a system um
  • 00:26:05
    and then obviously there's a lot of
  • 00:26:06
    legal things that need to be considered
  • 00:26:08
    so it's very good that a lot of people
  • 00:26:10
    can have uh you know it's not all
  • 00:26:12
    technical roles in blockchain companies
  • 00:26:14
    and there's jurisdiction uh have
  • 00:26:16
    different rules
  • 00:26:17
    and you know um globally one rule in
  • 00:26:20
    america might not be the same as in
  • 00:26:21
    europe
  • 00:26:22
    um so the industry from my experience is
  • 00:26:24
    expanding rapidly i think we're in
  • 00:26:25
    another growth phase at the moment
  • 00:26:27
    and i think coming out of this course uh
  • 00:26:29
    next year and in the next few years is
  • 00:26:31
    going to be
  • 00:26:32
    a very good time and there'll be a lot
  • 00:26:34
    of positions that will be
  • 00:26:36
    required to be filled by uh engineers
  • 00:26:39
    who have or even
  • 00:26:40
    uh students who've had kind of an
  • 00:26:42
    introduction to a lot of the things
  • 00:26:44
    associated with
  • 00:26:45
    with blockchain technology um it's not
  • 00:26:48
    all about cryptocurrency as well a lot
  • 00:26:50
    of people enter the space like myself
  • 00:26:52
    through the the eyes of bitcoin and
  • 00:26:54
    getting getting rich but
  • 00:26:55
    um from my experience a lot of the
  • 00:26:57
    projects that are being built or
  • 00:26:59
    industries uh figuring out things like
  • 00:27:01
    supply chain or
  • 00:27:03
    you know digital identity or voting
  • 00:27:04
    systems there are just a few examples

    but

    there's a lot of innovative disruptive

    projects being built
  • 00:27:11
    and i think smart contracts and and
  • 00:27:14
    private blockchains and things like
  • 00:27:15
    these are going to have a lot more

    impact over the next few years

    so i think yeah i think we're going to

    see a lot more um

    wave of engineers and and building on um

    systems

    uh over in the near future companies

    like blockchain we're mostly in the

    infrastructure and data side of things

    but uh developers can you know obviously

    utilize systems that we build

    to um you know build the next generation

    of decentralized applications

    and um so my presentation today is

    really about the industry

    everyone realizes that there is uh

    blockchain has become a commonplace now

    and people are starting to believe in
  • 00:29:06
    the benefits of solving real problems

    um in the last presentation andrew

    gave a quick definition of what
  • 00:29:15
    blockchain the features of blockchain

    i suppose in a nutshell on the bottom

    and what outcomes have been achieved if

    you were to look at private enterprises

    as an example

    many affected industries will be those

    that have large

    sets of business relationships with

    networks of suppliers

    these are businesses that are driven by

    complex relationships across

    many layers of suppliers so blockchain

    will have enormous effect there

    if we were to look at the food

    sector for example producers and exports

    two years and you will see a huge

    under standardization and now it's kind

    very concise

    answer but unfortunately my expertise is
