of them being accredited the quality

improvement department has to report

what we call patient safety events which

are things like a medicine being given

to the wrong patient and them dying or

the wrong body part being operated on

these kind of mistakes happen as I

be creating plans to make sure patient

safety events don't happen again but

your job goes way beyond that you're

there to make sure a hospital is

operating safely and effectively so you

would be working very closely with

doctors patients and other hospital

administration to solve problems by

senior year of college I was actually

able to intern in hospitals quality

improvement department and it was

actually a really cool job Qi is a real

good balance between being involved with

patients and working on the business

side of healthcare I worked on helping

to build a safer surgery setup which

actually involved to going to the

operating room and washing entire

procedures I got to talk to patients and

their families to see how their

experiences could have been improved I

also worked really closely with doctors

on projects that made it easier for them

to take care of their patients

and of course there were a bunch of

business meetings where we had to

explain everything we were finding to go

into quality improvement you need to

have a degree in Healthcare

Administration health information

management or some other sort of degree

that teaches you about the business side

of healthcare you also need to get a CP

HQ which would certify you as a

professional in healthcare quality and

some degrees might actually offer this

as part of their program most jobs

require some experience but if you go to

a school with a large academic Medical

Center then you can easily get an

internship in their quality improvement

department exactly like I did if you

one of the hospitals I worked with saw

that their data showed there were a

bunch of new patients visiting from a

zip code 30 minutes away the hospital

then decided to build a clinic in that

got a whole bunch of new patients and it

seeing a doctor more convenient there

are so many different types of jobs in

the hem field you could work as a data

analyst at a hospital which means you

would work with patient data to find

trends that could improve cost increase

the quality of care or enhance a patient

experience you could also be a

hospital's to answer registrar which

means it would work with our Cancer

Registry to report and maintain it and

that's where the government gets all of
