00:00:01
hello everybody and welcome back to my
00:00:03
channel
00:00:04
today i want to do a comparison for you
00:00:06
um i've already done
00:00:08
a review of several steel tongue drums
00:00:10
that you can find on amazon
00:00:12
but i just wanted to do a comparison of
00:00:15
these more um
00:00:16
a little bit more expensive drums that
00:00:18
you can get on amazon
00:00:20
and just show you kind of the
00:00:21
differences and the similarities and you
00:00:24
can decide which one might work best for
00:00:26
what you need
00:00:28
so i'm going to get started with this 14
00:00:31
note drum
00:00:32
um i'm going to put a link so you can
00:00:34
buy this on amazon down in the
00:00:36
description
00:00:37
and i'll do that for all of the drums as
00:00:38
well so you can find these specific ones
00:00:41
um so this one is 14 notes um and it is
00:00:45
made by
00:00:46
the huluru drum company let's see their
00:00:48
little thing right there
00:00:50
um and it is also in the key of c even
00:00:53
though it doesn't say that it's a c
00:00:54
major tongue drum um and you can see it
00:00:58
has 14 notes
00:00:59
i think it starts with a low
00:01:02
um a low five or a little four right
00:01:04
here
00:01:06
a little four and then it goes up to one
00:01:10
and then um you have the other one right
00:01:12
here
00:01:14
and then two out of three on top there
00:01:18
um so that gives you um a little bit
00:01:20
more than an octave
00:01:21
but not quite two octaves to work with
00:01:23
which is awesome
00:01:25
um i believe this drum is about 14
00:01:27
inches across i'm pretty sure all of
00:01:28
these drums i'm going to show you today
00:01:29
are 14 inches across
00:01:31
um and this one is interesting because
00:01:34
it is super thin
00:01:36
um so a lot of the drums that you'll see
00:01:38
are taller and less than than this
00:01:40
and this definitely gives it kind of a
00:01:42
distinctive sound which can be really
00:01:44
enjoyable
00:01:47
and the second one i'm going to show you
00:01:50
this one is a 15 tone drum
00:01:53
and so this does offer the whole two
00:01:55
octaves you've got
00:01:56
instead of the hole in the center you've
00:01:58
got the third down here
00:02:01
and that is definitely a real big low
00:02:03
note
00:02:05
and then it goes up to the one and then
00:02:08
the one up here
00:02:10
and just like the other drum you've got
00:02:12
the second and the third on top
00:02:15
um this drum definitely does sound more
00:02:18
um
00:02:19
it's fuller but it's also a little more
00:02:21
echoey than the other drum
00:02:23
and as you can see it is a lot less thin
00:02:26
and i think that contributes to its sort
00:02:28
of
00:02:28
tanky sound
00:02:32
and then finally this is the most
00:02:35
interesting drum to me
00:02:37
and because this sort of echoes a lot of
00:02:40
designs that i've seen from
00:02:41
independent makers but haven't really
00:02:43
seen out of a mass-produced drum from
00:02:45
china
00:02:46
um this has its two tongues
00:02:50
um for each tongue i guess it would be
00:02:52
the way to say it
00:02:53
um they're double tongues so you've got
00:02:56
one note here
00:02:58
and then the octave is right above it
00:03:03
um which definitely it creates some
00:03:05
really interesting overtones and is a
00:03:07
lot of fun
00:03:08
i love this one um and of course you do
00:03:10
have the full two octaves because each
00:03:12
note is
00:03:15
two octaves which is really cool um
00:03:18
but also i think it's important to note
00:03:20
that some of them
00:03:22
they don't seem to really be meant to
00:03:23
sound by themselves like once you get
00:03:24
really high
00:03:29
you can get that higher tongue to sound
00:03:31
but it's definitely
00:03:33
much more difficult it's more designed
00:03:35
to be an overtone for this lower tongue
00:03:37
right here
00:03:39
um so this drum is in d minor
00:03:42
which is really interesting because you
00:03:45
don't see
00:03:46
a lot of these mass-produced hand pans
00:03:48
in minor keys
00:03:49
mostly they're in c major um and the
00:03:51
gold one i forgot to mention is actually
00:03:53
in d
00:03:54
major which is pretty close
00:03:57
this one is also made by hulu
00:04:00
drum you can see their little makers
00:04:03
mark down there
00:04:05
um i know like i said this one is more
00:04:08
really for
00:04:09
um improvisational work um if you're
00:04:13
wanting to
00:04:14
play songs on your drum um like you're
00:04:16
following drum tabs and things like that
00:04:18
um this like double tongue drum
00:04:23
probably isn't going to be what you're
00:04:25
looking for
00:04:26
um it's going to be a little bit
00:04:27
trickier to label and you're not going
00:04:29
to be able to find
00:04:30
or maybe get a sound out of all of the
00:04:32
tongues
00:04:34
so it just really matters what you're
00:04:37
looking for in a tongue drum
00:04:39
with which one you want this one is a
00:04:41
little bit more expensive
00:04:43
but still cheaper than any other
00:04:46
double tongue drum on the market um
00:04:50
kosmoski which is a pretty famous um
00:04:53
tundra brand from russia their
00:04:56
um one that's designed like this is
00:04:59
called the rhythm drum
00:05:01
um and that one can get up to like 700
00:05:04
this one is only 200 on amazon so it's
00:05:06
actually a super good deal
00:05:08
okay so i'm going to go ahead and do
00:05:10
some playing for you with these
00:05:11
different drums
00:05:12
i'm going to start with the kuluru c
00:05:15
major
00:05:16
14 tone drum um and i'll play a little
00:05:19
bit with my hands and i will also play a
00:05:21
little bit with the mallets
00:05:23
these drums actually all come with these
00:05:26
same
00:05:26
mallets with black candles and um black
00:05:29
rubber tops
00:05:30
so i will play around on it a little bit
00:05:32
for you
00:05:33
and you can decide which sound you like
00:05:36
better
00:05:38
okay so we're going to start with a
00:05:44
[Music]
00:05:50
scale
00:05:53
[Music]
00:06:10
[Music]
00:06:19
okay and here's how this one sounds um
00:06:21
with hands
00:06:38
[Music]
00:06:44
[Music]
00:06:47
okay so here is the 15 tone drum
00:06:50
and this one is in the key of d major um
00:06:53
so it's a little bit higher
00:06:54
and again you have that third um in the
00:06:57
middle instead of a hole
00:06:59
and it's a little thicker so you'll hear
00:07:01
that difference in sound
00:07:03
i'm going to start with the mallets and
00:07:04
then we'll do hands
00:07:20
[Music]
00:07:50
okay last i'm going to give this d major
00:07:53
drum
00:07:54
or i'm sorry this is a minor drum a try
00:07:57
um again this isn't d minor it's a
00:07:59
little thinner um and this is the one
00:08:01
with the double tongues
00:08:02
and comparing it like it's just it's
00:08:05
amazing
00:08:07
okay so i'm gonna start with um the
00:08:10
biggest tongue
00:08:11
of the lowest note and just sort of move
00:08:13
up so you can hear how all of the
00:08:14
tongues sound
00:08:16
here we go
00:08:28
[Music]
00:08:44
it's really just amazing i love how that
00:08:46
reverberates
00:08:47
um i really feel like there's a big
00:08:49
difference i'm going to go ahead and try
00:08:50
it with hands
00:08:51
just hear um if that sounds a nature
00:08:53
prank here we go
00:09:16
it is definitely a little harder to hit
00:09:18
those notes accurately and with my hands
00:09:21
um
00:09:23
i imagine if i practiced for a little
00:09:24
bit i would get better at that
00:09:27
but with the mallet it's like
00:09:31
i feel like this is genuinely
00:09:33
otherworldly
00:09:34
um with the overtones that are going on
00:09:37
um just to give you an example
00:09:39
um i will play um the same d
00:09:43
on this 14 note drum as i'm gonna play
00:09:46
on here and you'll see
00:09:48
how crazy the difference is so here we
00:09:49
go
00:09:54
okay so really listen to these over
00:09:56
towns we'll see if the mic will pick it
00:09:57
up
00:09:57
[Music]
00:10:03
do you hear that one just really rings
00:10:05
this is remarkable
00:10:06
um again i'm gonna say that
00:10:10
it really is dependent on what you're
00:10:12
using them for
00:10:13
if you want to do um like play actual
00:10:17
songs and
00:10:18
use the tabs that you can find here on
00:10:20
youtube or anywhere else on the internet
00:10:22
um then you should definitely get a drum
00:10:24
like um the 14
00:10:25
or the 15 no um because they have the
00:10:28
numbers
00:10:29
um and it's gonna be a lot easier to get
00:10:32
a clean pure tone instead of like trying
00:10:34
to find
00:10:37
just the one tongue um
00:10:40
and this one is tuned in a minor scale
00:10:42
um so that
00:10:43
also makes it a little bit harder to
00:10:46
adapt
00:10:46
the melodies as you'd want to use them
00:10:50
but if you're looking for a meditation
00:10:52
tool or if you want to just sit and play
00:10:55
something beautiful
00:10:57
i really recommend this drum like this
00:11:00
is
00:11:01
it's gorgeous i feel like i could just
00:11:02
sit here
00:11:16
um so there you are that is my review of
00:11:18
um some of the little bit more expensive
00:11:20
drums that you can find on amazon
00:11:22
um unfortunately none of these drums are
00:11:26
magnetic so none of them are able to be
00:11:28
tuned with magnets
00:11:29
which is kind of a bummer if you're
00:11:31
looking to do some of the interesting
00:11:32
tunings but they all do in my opinion
00:11:36
have a better tone than the other
00:11:39
drums that you're going to find on
00:11:41
amazon or
00:11:42
from any mass-produced place
00:11:45
i really do if you have a lot of money
00:11:47
to spend
00:11:49
i really do recommend taking a look at
00:11:51
some of my videos for some of the
00:11:54
unique companies where they make the
00:11:56
drums handmade
00:11:57
um a lot of those are just gorgeous um
00:12:00
but
00:12:00
if you're looking to spend um somewhere
00:12:03
in the 100 to 200
00:12:04
range these are really good choices i
00:12:07
love these drums
00:12:10
i am going to put the links down in the
00:12:12
description if you would like to go buy
00:12:13
