How to actually stop procrastinating
- 00:00:00live from Stockholm with a stack of
- 00:00:01platters that
- 00:00:03matter hello Jason how is Stockholm
- 00:00:05treating you who can say who can
- 00:00:09say I'm am so happy that you decided to
- 00:00:11join us here for this little can I say

- 00:00:21odds here really so um sure why not
- 00:00:25hello hello we have so many people who
- 00:00:28have joined already and I more people
- 00:00:30will be joining us pretty soon so uh I
- 00:00:34just want to uh start this uh wonderful
- 00:00:36conversation by saying thank thanks to
- 00:00:38everyone who sent tons of questions
- 00:00:41since yesterday my god there are a lot
- 00:00:42of questions here there are so many
- 00:00:44questions and we hundreds of questions
- 00:00:47yeah so we went through them and I kind
- 00:00:49of categorized them a little bit in few
- 00:00:52different um uh basically like chapters
- 00:00:56of this
- 00:00:57conversation U so we're going to start
- 00:00:59with a story storytelling questions then
- 00:01:00we're going to get to the actual play
- 00:01:03questions and then to some more general
- 00:01:05questions how do we feel about that
- 00:01:07Jason uh that sounds great I think I
- 00:01:10think we will be guided by your wisdom
- 00:01:11here Al righty uh well I'm not sure if
- 00:01:14we were going to I have to admit I'm as
- 00:01:17stunned by there are hundreds of
- 00:01:19questions so I'm amazed that you were
- 00:01:21able to still these down into a a
- 00:01:23spreadsheet thank you yeah yeah that
- 00:01:26that's that's you know that that was
- 00:01:27really fun there was a lot of like there
- 00:01:29was for example one question that I'm
- 00:01:31not sure that we are going to answer
- 00:01:33today but I really loved it yeah um
- 00:01:35which is whether you can do a back flip
- 00:01:36or not I
- 00:01:40mean yes but not
- 00:01:43survive great so with that in mind let
- 00:01:46us start and we're going to begin with
- 00:01:49the storytelling and some little insight
- 00:01:52for our fellow storytellers here on the
- 00:01:53server with arsenic candy who has asked
- 00:01:58how long have you
- 00:02:00yes how long have you been a Storyteller
- 00:02:02and multiple other people asked if you
- 00:02:04have any advice for beginner
- 00:02:07storytellers so first of all arsenic
- 00:02:09candy is a terrific username I'm
- 00:02:11impressed really that is fantastic I
- 00:02:15feel that needs to show up in a vampire
- 00:02:17the Masquerade Chronicle at some point
- 00:02:19um how long have it been a Storyteller H
- 00:02:22you know when people ask me that the
- 00:02:26flippant ironic answer I normally give
- 00:02:29is long younger than you but that's not
- 00:02:32really very helpful so we're not going
- 00:02:33to give that answer today um I've been a
- 00:02:36vampire the Masquerade Storyteller since
- 00:02:38vampire the Masquerade first arrived on
- 00:02:40the scene over 30 years ago in
- 00:02:441991 yes I am that old um it was Gen Con
- 00:02:481991 and from the moment the book got
- 00:02:50into my hands and I saw the the red row
- 00:02:54on the cover and and flipped through the
- 00:02:55pages and read about the Clans and the
- 00:02:58the the hunger and the Beast and um
- 00:03:00Chronicles I knew these are the stories
- 00:03:02I wanted to tell so that
- 00:03:05long
- 00:03:06um the other part of the question was
- 00:03:09advice for beginner storytellers yeah
- 00:03:11maybe something that would help you when
- 00:03:13you are
- 00:03:14starting so advice for beginner
- 00:03:16storytellers I think could be an
- 00:03:18entirely separate conversation that we
- 00:03:21should look at doing another day um
- 00:03:23because it's a you it's a multivaried
- 00:03:25topic and there are as many different
- 00:03:28kinds of vampire CRI Chronicles and
- 00:03:30storytellers as there are vampires so
- 00:03:33it's hard to give generic advice that is
- 00:03:36one size fits all but if you're a brand
- 00:03:39new Storyteller just beginning or just
- 00:03:41thinking about it I guess I would tell
- 00:03:42you these three things one trust
- 00:03:46yourself the fact that you want to be a
- 00:03:48Storyteller and want to be part of
- 00:03:51creating these stories and want to tell
- 00:03:53stories for your friends that's 90% of
- 00:03:57the battle right there just wanting to
- 00:03:59do do it is
- 00:04:01important uh number two talk to your
- 00:04:04players and talk with your players have
- 00:04:06a Frank open honest discussion about
- 00:04:09what you all want from your vampire
- 00:04:11story ask what style of story do you
- 00:04:14want do you want to be action adventure
- 00:04:16John Wick do you want it to be political
- 00:04:19thriller do you want it to be strange
- 00:04:21new trade do you want it to be Darkly
- 00:04:23romantic ask what each player's
- 00:04:25expectations and desires are find out
- 00:04:27from them what would make it an awesome
- 00:04:29some game and go from there I know that
- 00:04:32there's a reluctant to have that Frank
- 00:04:34honest open discussion because we fear
- 00:04:36that it will take away some of the
- 00:04:38mystery of the story but I think the
- 00:04:40reverse is true honestly I think the
- 00:04:43more you talk about it before you begin
- 00:04:45the Richer deeper and more exciting the
- 00:04:48story is once you start to tell it
- 00:04:50together and the third thing I would say
- 00:04:52is um check with your players as you go
- 00:04:56at the end of the first session or even
- 00:04:58during the first session if you feel you
- 00:04:59need need to talk about what's going
- 00:05:01right don't be afraid to break the
- 00:05:02fourth wall or you know any wall indeed
- 00:05:06uh talk about what you could be doing
- 00:05:08better talk about what we want to see
- 00:05:10next week okay this this story was
- 00:05:12awesome but I would like it to have more
- 00:05:14action I would like it to have less
- 00:05:16action the more you talk together and
- 00:05:18communicate together I think the more
- 00:05:21satisfying the experience will be for
- 00:05:22everybody if you do those three things
- 00:05:26and everybody comes away from the table
- 00:05:28having fun and wanting more you did it
- 00:05:31right does that help I am sure it does
- 00:05:35that was amazing and uh we do have a lot
- 00:05:37of uh more questions from beginner sters
- 00:05:40including Lucky Duck Studios Lucky Duck
- 00:05:44okay is that different from a lucky Swan
- 00:05:47I'm not sure I'm not sure but Lucky Duck
- 00:05:49is asking what does your Storyteller
- 00:05:51prep look like do you have sticky notes
- 00:05:53pages of quotes I mean we should be so
- 00:05:56lucky right um yes um
- 00:06:01my Storyteller prep is generally bullet
- 00:06:03points I like to write by hand or on a
- 00:06:07on on a Google doc or or other handy
- 00:06:10electronic format a lot of bullet points
- 00:06:14um and I find that a very easy format
- 00:06:17because they scan visually very well
- 00:06:20it's easy to look at bullet points very
- 00:06:22fast and pick out what is important and
- 00:06:24what is not and to prioritize them um
- 00:06:28and to make notes around bullet points
- 00:06:32um sticky notes I organized my entire
- 00:06:35working professional life in in and
- 00:06:37around sticky notes just ask Marty about
- 00:06:39my desk um pages of quotes not so much I
- 00:06:44find because my own short-term memory is
- 00:06:47so poor I don't do well with
- 00:06:51remembering lots and lots of pages of
- 00:06:53quotes I'll forget which page it was on
- 00:06:56I don't know where I put it so much of
- 00:06:59what I do is a combination of bullet
- 00:07:01points and terrified improvisation in
- 00:07:03the
- 00:07:05moment and speaking of improvisation we
- 00:07:08have a question from avarest uh links
- 00:07:11who asked something that a lot of
- 00:07:12commune members are speculating about
- 00:07:15what percentage of planning or
- 00:07:17discussion do you do with your players
- 00:07:19between sessions in preparations for a
- 00:07:21game and how much of that is fully
- 00:07:24planned out or just more Cliff not's
- 00:07:26approach to
- 00:07:27planning that is a that's a question
- 00:07:30that I think a lot of storytellers and
- 00:07:31game Masters not just myself get because
- 00:07:35there is um there is a level of
- 00:07:37intriguing mystery around how how much
- 00:07:40to prepare because the answer is not
- 00:07:43scientific and it varies from
- 00:07:45Storyteller to Storyteller many
- 00:07:46storytellers I know prepare um in
- 00:07:50extraordinary detail detail that I could
- 00:07:53never hope to to imagine um uh when I
- 00:07:57look at comrades in arms like uh
- 00:07:59um Matthew Mercer or brenlee Mullan or
- 00:08:03Briar B Dave Walters and see how they
- 00:08:06prepare everybody's different Nobody
- 00:08:08Does it the same way everybody does it
- 00:08:10in the way that works for them
- 00:08:13specifically and I think that every
- 00:08:14story teller has to find their
- 00:08:17own method that works um to answer the
- 00:08:21question directly um I talk with players
- 00:08:25between sessions quite a lot and before
- 00:08:28sessions quite a lot um but nothing is
- 00:08:31fully planned it can't be I don't know
- 00:08:33what they're going to do I know where
- 00:08:35each story each episode begins I know
- 00:08:40what the opening scene is I know what
- 00:08:42the NPCs want what they don't want but
- 00:08:45the players have free agency they can do
- 00:08:48whatever they want and I just have to be
- 00:08:49prepared to interpret the world and what
- 00:08:53the world wants in reaction to what they
- 00:08:58decide
- 00:08:59that might have been a longer answer
- 00:09:00than than aest links wanted I think
- 00:09:03that's a very good answer but uh after
- 00:09:05you plan the chronicle it's time to
- 00:09:07start it and scratch monkey has asked
- 00:09:10how do you create a strong start for
- 00:09:12your
- 00:09:13Chronicles I think it depends on what
- 00:09:15the players are looking for and what you
- 00:09:17want to do as a Storyteller um many
- 00:09:21players want a Chronicle that is a slow
- 00:09:23burn mystery thriller with lot of
- 00:09:26investigation and a very measured Pace
- 00:09:28others w't action adventure some want um
- 00:09:31you know a terrifying eldrich horror and
- 00:09:34you have to gauge your starting scene
- 00:09:36according to player expectations and
- 00:09:38desires if you don't know if you haven't
- 00:09:41talked about it if there hasn't been
- 00:09:42opportunity to talk about it if it's a
- 00:09:44one shot you haven't plannned for or
- 00:09:46nobody has a preference I like to start
- 00:09:49with a strong frame and a call to action
- 00:09:52and by that I mean um a story conceit
- 00:09:56all the characters are X and you're here
- 00:09:59here to do why you are all small domain
- 00:10:02holders and here to do a favor for the
- 00:10:04baren or you've all been hauled before
- 00:10:06the prince for judgment because you've
- 00:10:08all transgressed
- 00:10:09allegedly uh against some rule uh in the
- 00:10:13domain and you must be called to account
- 00:10:14for it or if all else fails and you're
- 00:10:17really in doubt and you don't know what
- 00:10:18to do I would say start the story in May
- 00:10:21a race in in the middle of the scene um
- 00:10:24with action drop them all into a combat
- 00:10:27scenario or a desperate Chase or uh
- 00:10:30pitch battle for survival and let the
- 00:10:32story emerge from what the players
- 00:10:34decide in the moment that's pretty
- 00:10:37hardcore but it can yield really
- 00:10:39interesting chronical
- 00:10:41results and and a lot of note-taking as
- 00:10:46well that
- 00:10:48is I think that might
- 00:10:50um I think that might answer a lot of
- 00:10:53questions from a lot of storytellers
- 00:10:54about where do I
- 00:10:56begin and now I really want to play in a
- 00:10:59Chronicle with you one day where we
- 00:11:01start with a car chase or something
- 00:11:05exploding yeah U and speaking of um of
- 00:11:09backgrounds that you established before
- 00:11:11um you start the game and also vamper de
- 00:11:13masquerade having this very common theme
- 00:11:15of City being the character I feel like
- 00:11:18everyone can agree with the fact that
- 00:11:19you are doing this amazingly in your
- 00:11:21actual place with LA with New York with
- 00:11:24Seattle I still remember that moment of
- 00:11:26Seattle by night with the gam wall and
- 00:11:28how like amazingly described it well to
- 00:11:31be fair that's because you had seen the
- 00:11:34Gum Wall the day before and you knew
- 00:11:35what I was talking about but yes I feel
- 00:11:38like I felt more disgusted hearing you
- 00:11:39talking about it than actually seeing it
- 00:11:41that was amazing it's a pretty grim and
- 00:11:44gruesome place right it is but with that
- 00:11:47in mind Monte cor Phantom asked um tips
- 00:11:50for getting a fuller richer idea of a
- 00:11:53city before running a Chronicle in it oh
- 00:11:57good question mandor Phantom and again
- 00:11:59I'm in awe of all these uh these
- 00:12:01usernames I feel like I've kind of
- 00:12:03fallen down on the job here with with
- 00:12:05mine because these are fantastic um a
- 00:12:08fuller richer idea of a city and I I'm
- 00:12:10going to try to answer the question that
- 00:12:13I think you're asking and the question I
- 00:12:16think you're asking is how do I help my
- 00:12:18players feel like they're there that we
- 00:12:20really are in this place you know
- 00:12:23mentally at least and emotionally for
- 00:12:25the span of the time we're at the table
- 00:12:27together how do I help them feel like we
- 00:12:30really are in Seattle or Istanbul or
- 00:12:33Prague or Singapore or cbera or wherever
- 00:12:37we are in the world um it isn't easy but
- 00:12:42it's very rewarding of course and you
- 00:12:44have to kind of En list your players to
- 00:12:46begin
- 00:12:47with um every city has its own voice its
- 00:12:52own character its own mood much of that
- 00:12:55is available to us through basic
- 00:12:57internet searches we live in a Charmed
- 00:12:59time in which you know the sum total of
- 00:13:01all human knowledge and allegations are
- 00:13:04available to us at at lightning speed
- 00:13:06through the internet but sifting through
- 00:13:09that to the point where you can actually
- 00:13:12get enough information to run a
- 00:13:13Chronicle without spending years at it
- 00:13:15is really
- 00:13:16challenging and I think honestly uh fan
- 00:13:20ofor manum when you're up against it
- 00:13:22less is more I think that for each City
- 00:13:24for each area region domain pull out
- 00:13:28three five basic facts characteristics
- 00:13:31traits truths that you can run with and
- 00:13:34build on those one of the one of the
- 00:13:38biggest mistakes I think many beginning
- 00:13:39storytellers make especially is trying
- 00:13:41to detail everything and you don't need
- 00:13:44to you just need to give enough to
- 00:13:48convey a sense of place and ask this ask
- 00:13:52your players for help in developing it
- 00:13:54as you go um if I was going to create a
- 00:13:57strong start for a richer Fuller idea of
- 00:14:00a city that I've never ever been to in
- 00:14:02my life such as um Marty help me out
- 00:14:06pick a city I've never been
- 00:14:08to have you been to posang you haven't
- 00:14:10been to POS I think I don't think I have
- 00:14:13actually um I would start on I would
- 00:14:15start on the internet I would try to
- 00:14:17find three or four characteristics that
- 00:14:19define that City I would look at YouTube
- 00:14:21to see how people see their City videos
- 00:14:24of people walking through the city at
- 00:14:26night especially I would look for
- 00:14:28current news articles I would look for
- 00:14:30um literary essays and I would um look
- 00:14:34for user groups online on Discord on any
- 00:14:37platform that are run by people who
- 00:14:39actually live there and just try to
- 00:14:41tease out a bare handful of facts that
- 00:14:44make it feel like it's an inhabited
- 00:14:47place I think another mistake that many
- 00:14:49storytellers make is that they're trying
- 00:14:51to recreate a city exactly and you don't
- 00:14:53need to you just need to create the um
- 00:14:56the impression of it and ask your
- 00:14:58players for
- 00:15:00help great and we also had uh one user
- 00:15:04who asked multiple really good questions
- 00:15:06it was hard to pick um us oh okay yeah
- 00:15:11KIRO yeah I picked one which I think is
- 00:15:14a lot of people are struggling with it
- 00:15:15and we've heard a lot of questions about
- 00:15:17that but what tricks can you use to
- 00:15:20develop interesting and tactical combat
- 00:15:22Encounters in your role play oh yeah
- 00:15:26good question it's a great question
- 00:15:29because of course vampire the Masquerade
- 00:15:31in particular world of darkness in
- 00:15:32general but vampire the Masquerade in
- 00:15:34particular is not a tactical combat
- 00:15:37simulation engine that's not what it's
- 00:15:39built for that's not what it's good at
- 00:15:42so um it can really be tricky if you've
- 00:15:45got a table full of players that is
- 00:15:46desperate to play a John Wick Style
- 00:15:48Adventure where the placement of the
- 00:15:51flower pot really matters in relation to
- 00:15:53the stairs it's tougher because the game
- 00:15:57isn't set up to do that the game is to
- 00:15:59set up to be slightly more cinematic and
- 00:16:01give you General impressions of things
- 00:16:03uh that you then Riff on in the moment
- 00:16:06or riff off of as the case may be um but
- 00:16:10uh some of the things that I do to
- 00:16:11create interesting tactical combat
- 00:16:13encounters is
- 00:16:14this and I admit that I am cheating
- 00:16:18everybody got that I am cheating here um
- 00:16:21I think of my combats in terms of
- 00:16:24zones so if my coder is facing off
- 00:16:27against a bunch of ghouls who are
- 00:16:30running say a taxi cab repair station in
- 00:16:34the middle of New York City I think of
- 00:16:36three zones Zone one is what the players
- 00:16:40have immediately in front of them and
- 00:16:41can reach and around it's the taxi cabs
- 00:16:45the tools around them the hydraulic
- 00:16:48lifts and the various pieces of
- 00:16:50equipment immediately Zone 2 is just
- 00:16:53beyond the reach it's behind the next
- 00:16:55series of doors that's got Secrets they
- 00:16:57can't see but has interesting terrain or
- 00:17:00features they could access if they can
- 00:17:02get to that zone The Zone beyond that is
- 00:17:06completely off the map and for them to
- 00:17:09discover once they get there I know it's
- 00:17:11there but they don't it's the secret
- 00:17:13Zone and if you think of combat tactical
- 00:17:16encounters for vampire in terms of zones
- 00:17:19I think it will go much faster and
- 00:17:20easier for you and I admit that that's
- 00:17:22not in the rules but you asked how I
- 00:17:25think of it and that's how I think of
- 00:17:26it that's interesting I've never heard
- 00:17:29that um that explanation from yours that
- 00:17:31that's super cool um yeah I think zones
- 00:17:34are really interesting they work indoors
- 00:17:36or out of doors you can add uh you can
- 00:17:39add
- 00:17:41um tactical features to zones zones that
- 00:17:44are close have things that can trip you
- 00:17:46up or that you have to move around jump
- 00:17:48on jump over zones that are uh if the
- 00:17:51zone is you know one number away zone
- 00:17:54two that's too far for you to reach in a
- 00:17:56round but it's within combat that range
- 00:17:59of say a throne weapon or a pistol and
- 00:18:02then Zone 3 is beyond that once you
- 00:18:04start thinking in combat in terms of
- 00:18:06zones like that tactical segregation for
- 00:18:09actions becomes a lot
- 00:18:11easier this sounds like you are talking
- 00:18:13about video game design it's great to
- 00:18:15help these things each other well I mean
- 00:18:18we all play video games right um and I
- 00:18:20think that tabletop RPGs one of the
- 00:18:23advantages of tabletop RPGs is that they
- 00:18:26happen in real time and they're
- 00:18:27collaborative and many of the people at
- 00:18:30the table if not all of them have seen a
- 00:18:32movie or a TV show or played a video
- 00:18:35game and the idea that combat happens in
- 00:18:37zones that are let's say near close and
- 00:18:41far is is pretty common to all the media
- 00:18:44we
- 00:18:45enjoy I don't say that it works for
- 00:18:48everybody but that's how I make it more
- 00:18:50interesting I think it's a very useful
- 00:18:52answer thank you and uh you are known
- 00:18:55for having a lot of personalities at
- 00:18:57your tables um a lot of really really
- 00:19:01amazing characters and and people behind
- 00:19:02these characters who who can really
- 00:19:04brief life into them but iris of the
- 00:19:07valley is asking an interesting question
- 00:19:09do you have any tips or tricks to help
- 00:19:11quieter players feel comfortable and
- 00:19:13come out of their shell at the
- 00:19:17table
- 00:19:18um feel more
- 00:19:20comfortable and come out of their shell
- 00:19:23yes and no
- 00:19:26um I think
- 00:19:30again I'm going to answer the question
- 00:19:31that I think you're answer
- 00:19:34asking players who feel quier or more
- 00:19:37reticent to engage or participate um can
- 00:19:41feel that way for any number of reasons
- 00:19:43and I think it's unfair to the player to
- 00:19:45guess in the moment better to have that
- 00:19:47conversation with the player in session
- 00:19:49zero or four and talk about what kind of
- 00:19:52play style do you prefer what do you
- 00:19:55expect from this game what can I do as a
- 00:19:57storyteller to make you feel comfortable
- 00:19:59and welcome and safe at the table um if
- 00:20:02you're in the game and you haven't had
- 00:20:04that conversation and the player seems
- 00:20:06quiet I find it I find for me it's
- 00:20:10better to stop and say are you feeling
- 00:20:12comfortable are you feeling engaged
- 00:20:14could I be doing anything differently
- 00:20:15for you I realize that's not
- 00:20:19necessarily um ordinary Storyteller
- 00:20:21advice but I've never found that it
- 00:20:23negatively impacts the flow of play to
- 00:20:25stop and say everybody doing okay could
- 00:20:28I be doing anything differently to make
- 00:20:29today fun for you um is there anything
- 00:20:32you need or is anything you'd like me to
- 00:20:33do differently I find that 99% of the
- 00:20:36time the quiet player will in fact
- 00:20:38respond and say you know what I'd like
- 00:20:41it if there was more of X but less of Y
- 00:20:43or more of Z but a lot less of Q
- 00:20:48um but there's a second part of this
- 00:20:51question um and that is that
- 00:20:54um how do you help them come out of the
- 00:20:56shell and the answer is I don't
- 00:20:59um I think that the player gets to
- 00:21:01decide how far out of the shell they
- 00:21:03want to
- 00:21:04come um once we've established that
- 00:21:07communication that area of safety that
- 00:21:09they understand that there's consent
- 00:21:12involved in in every step of the the
- 00:21:15story and that they have the freedom to
- 00:21:18Hal the action and express what they
- 00:21:21need or what they don't want um I find
- 00:21:24they find their own level and it's it's
- 00:21:26not it's not my role
- 00:21:28to bring them more or less out of their
- 00:21:30shell than they want to be that make
- 00:21:33sense yeah I appreciate this answer I
- 00:21:36think it's really really awesome that
- 00:21:39pushing people out right honestly I
- 00:21:42think of I mean I've had players where
- 00:21:45I've had tables where
- 00:21:47players don't seem to engage much
- 00:21:50actively but um as long as they're
- 00:21:53checked in with and they feel safe and
- 00:21:56comfortable and they're having a good
- 00:21:57time
- 00:21:58they come away from the table thinking
- 00:22:00this was a great experience and if you
- 00:22:02establish that that level of trust
- 00:22:05during the game uh and they know that
- 00:22:08they can say what what they
- 00:22:10need They'll Come Away thinking this is
- 00:22:14a great experience and I want to do it
- 00:22:16again that's a really cool answer I like
- 00:22:18it thank you and now when it comes to
- 00:22:22your very memorable story to characters
- 00:22:24H hunger of VNA is asking what makes a
- 00:22:28good story character in your opinion ha
- 00:22:31or hunger VNA I I know what I know what
- 00:22:33VNA is but I don't know what ha or
- 00:22:35hunger VNA mean um what makes a good
- 00:22:37story character is um desires they need
- 00:22:41to want things it is good to want things
- 00:22:45it's good for every character to want
- 00:22:46things but it is especially important
- 00:22:49the Storyteller characters want things
- 00:22:52if they don't want things they don't act
- 00:22:53and if they don't act they're not a good
- 00:22:55Storyteller character you need to know
- 00:22:57what they want what they will do to get
- 00:23:00it what lines they tell themselves they
- 00:23:03will not cross to get those things and
- 00:23:06what happens if they do cross those
- 00:23:08lines if you understand those strong
- 00:23:11motivations and the limitations they're
- 00:23:13great Storyteller character I know
- 00:23:15exactly what fiorenza wants what she
- 00:23:17will do to get it what she won't do what
- 00:23:20she tells herself she won't do and what
- 00:23:23actually happens if she does it
- 00:23:26anyway that is great and you say that
- 00:23:31now but we haven't seen pure enza
- 00:23:33Unleashed yet I am afraid I am very very
- 00:23:36afraid as as well you should be we're
- 00:23:40jumping a little bit in the level of of
- 00:23:42of
- 00:23:43um um experience in storytelling right
- 00:23:46now because we are jumping into a
- 00:23:47question that is way more specialized
- 00:23:49let's say and something that uh story
- 00:23:51ter on the advanced level deal with from
- 00:23:54muga asking how do you make things like
- 00:23:58managing resources acquiring property
- 00:24:01and maintaining domain engaging and
- 00:24:04immersive it's a big part of vampire but
- 00:24:06it's hard to weave it in in those story
- 00:24:09Rich uh stories in which everything just
- 00:24:12happens one after another right what a
- 00:24:14great question it really is Moon sugar
- 00:24:17which sounds like just the greatest aril
- 00:24:19recipe name ever um
- 00:24:23the the short answer is that yes it is
- 00:24:27very difficult to do that seamlessly at
- 00:24:29the table in the middle of the action
- 00:24:31because the truth is that resources
- 00:24:35property
- 00:24:36domain um contacts allies influences are
- 00:24:42abstract ideas that don't have precise
- 00:24:45mechanical applications in the moment my
- 00:24:48experience has been that they are most
- 00:24:50effective in the downtime and by
- 00:24:52downtime I mean when the spotlight is
- 00:24:55off the immediate action of the table
- 00:24:57not necessar necessarily between game
- 00:24:58sessions although that is a great time
- 00:25:01to work with your players on what
- 00:25:02they're doing in that area of vampire
- 00:25:06but whenever there is a lull in the
- 00:25:08action it is never a bad idea to swing
- 00:25:11the spotlight over and say okay you've
- 00:25:14all done this terrible thing which
- 00:25:15you're going to pay for later but in the
- 00:25:17meantime let's talk about how your
- 00:25:19allies your contacts your influences uh
- 00:25:23might respond to it what you might be
- 00:25:24doing with them in the meantime do if
- 00:25:27you contact your touchtones how are you
- 00:25:29managing your domain um you know is your
- 00:25:33portillon affected by by the situation
- 00:25:36that you've just uh experienced you know
- 00:25:38you blew up an entire Street what
- 00:25:40happens to the access to Mortals in your
- 00:25:42area
- 00:25:44um yeah observed more in the uh in the
- 00:25:47breach right um it is hard to quantify
- 00:25:51those things as hard and fast roles in
- 00:25:54the middle of the action um and so I
- 00:25:57understand in Moon sugar question so
- 00:26:01story heavy sessions don't have a lot of
- 00:26:03room for those but I think it's
- 00:26:06worthwhile to use the breaks between
- 00:26:10intense scenes to check in with players
- 00:26:13on how they might be engaging with those
- 00:26:15parts of their character sheets and
- 00:26:17especially between
- 00:26:20games you could even make a complete
- 00:26:23miname out of many of these traits um
- 00:26:28gosh that's a that's probably a separate
- 00:26:30conversation we should do another time
- 00:26:32how do we use allies contacts and
- 00:26:34influences and domain as a mini game
- 00:26:38this is again video game design I love
- 00:26:42this it actually really is video game
- 00:26:44design because I'm bringing in some
- 00:26:46video game design elements into my
- 00:26:48storytelling which may or may not be
- 00:26:50fair I'm not
- 00:26:51sure actually a very good push towards a
- 00:26:54lot of storys out the hey if you want to
- 00:26:56do game design maybe maybe you're a good
- 00:26:59person to do it maybe you want to double
- 00:27:00in
- 00:27:01it um so speaking of um adding some more
- 00:27:07game Elements mini games into your
- 00:27:09stories saurin has noticed that you have
- 00:27:13been using occasionally Mortals to
- 00:27:16inject a little bit of levity into your
- 00:27:18Chronicle why do you think they are so
- 00:27:20effective as a contrast to player
- 00:27:22character vampire oh wow s and great
- 00:27:25question I mean I'm going to answer the
- 00:27:27question on two levels I'll answer it on
- 00:27:29the obvious level and then maybe on the
- 00:27:31less obvious level the obvious level is
- 00:27:35they're alive they enjoy the full gamut
- 00:27:38of human experience and emotion they
- 00:27:40breathe they blink they sleep they eat
- 00:27:43they shop they go to school they brush
- 00:27:44their teeth they have to deal with
- 00:27:47difficult bosses they got to shop for
- 00:27:49groceries they um go to the movies they
- 00:27:53are part of the living breathing world
- 00:27:56and they outnumber vampires is by
- 00:27:58billions to one they're the norm and
- 00:28:02they are the Baseline of experience in
- 00:28:06the world of Darkness because of course
- 00:28:08the world of darkness is our world but
- 00:28:11with the Supernatural overlaid on top of
- 00:28:15it
- 00:28:16um Mortals I think remind us of who we
- 00:28:20are as viewers in actual plays but they
- 00:28:23remind us of who we are when we're
- 00:28:25players at the table as well
- 00:28:28I'm I'm very fond of starting my my
- 00:28:30actual plays by reminding the players at
- 00:28:33the table that when the sun was in the
- 00:28:35sky that day the humans of the city The
- 00:28:38Mortals went about their day they got
- 00:28:41out of bed they brushed their teeth they
- 00:28:43kissed their kids goodbyes as they went
- 00:28:44on to school they went to a job or maybe
- 00:28:47they worked from home they went shopping
- 00:28:48they walked the dog and all this time
- 00:28:52their lungs are breathing their eyes are
- 00:28:54blinking their hearts are beating
- 00:28:56they're human they're alive alive
- 00:28:58they're experiencing the world as only
- 00:29:00humans can and in a way that is funny
- 00:29:05when you contrast it with the undead
- 00:29:08situation that the vampire is thrust
- 00:29:10into the vampire has been stuck in the
- 00:29:13situation probably not by
- 00:29:16choice and the situation is absurd
- 00:29:19they're part of this unliving Neo feudal
- 00:29:22society that is existing outside the
- 00:29:26norm of humanity that they know and
- 00:29:29that's kind of funny you can't help but
- 00:29:32laugh at the idea of humans rubbing up
- 00:29:34against vampires in a situation where
- 00:29:37the humans have no idea what's going on
- 00:29:40the irony almost writes itself sometimes
- 00:29:43the humor is a little darker maybe uh
- 00:29:47and sometimes it's not but I think
- 00:29:50there's plenty of room
- 00:29:52for um there's plenty of room for a
- 00:29:54smile and an ironic laugh whenever
- 00:29:56humans who are just living their lives
- 00:29:59have to butt up against the supernatural
- 00:30:01in our
- 00:30:02world when you I don't know that was
- 00:30:05helpful or not
- 00:30:06but but there we are yeah when when you
- 00:30:09said um it sometimes gets darker I just
- 00:30:12reminded myself the moments of your
- 00:30:14actual play
- 00:30:16Chronicles well I mean yeah think about
- 00:30:18it you know you're you're you're a
- 00:30:20person minding their own business you're
- 00:30:21you're at a club or at the shopping mall
- 00:30:24or walking their dog and suddenly
- 00:30:26through random chance through fateful
- 00:30:29[ __ ] up whatever suddenly you are forced
- 00:30:33to confront the
- 00:30:35supernatural this is a vampire and
- 00:30:37they're going to drink your blood or
- 00:30:39they are a werewolf and they're going to
- 00:30:41ask directions to the to you know to the
- 00:30:43nearest uh bus station or uh you know
- 00:30:46it's a hunter hot in the trail of some
- 00:30:48ghost in your neighborhood and I think
- 00:30:51there's this
- 00:30:52weird ironic blinking time shift where
- 00:30:55you have where The Mortals realize the
- 00:30:58world is not what I thought it was the
- 00:31:01story that I'm telling with my life is
- 00:31:03not the story we're actually telling and
- 00:31:07there is drama there and there is fear
- 00:31:09but there's also humor it's it can be
- 00:31:12delicate sometimes um but I think it's
- 00:31:15worthwhile to explore especially as a
- 00:31:18Counterpoint to what can be very very
- 00:31:20serious uh consequences and drama in our
- 00:31:23world of
- 00:31:25Darkness that's great right um and we
- 00:31:28have a very nice question which I just I
- 00:31:31loved reading it and thank you so much
- 00:31:33Calder for uh asking this one what are
- 00:31:37some things players can do to make the
- 00:31:39job of a Storyteller easier we want to
- 00:31:42help you out what do
- 00:31:44we Calder thank you uh on behalf of
- 00:31:47storytellers everywhere we are grateful
- 00:31:49for your question um I don't know who
- 00:31:53who's I don't know whose called
- 00:31:55Storyteller is but um I think they get
- 00:31:57one extra die in their pool to their
- 00:31:59next role whatever whatever that may
- 00:32:01be for sure um what are things players
- 00:32:05can do to make the job of a story SL
- 00:32:07easier
- 00:32:08um let's let's let's say three easy
- 00:32:11things and then three things that are a
- 00:32:12little bit more difficult one please
- 00:32:14take notes um I can't speak for every
- 00:32:17Storyteller but my short-term memory is
- 00:32:19terrible and I can't take notes fast
- 00:32:21enough to keep up with my imagination so
- 00:32:24players who take notes about what's
- 00:32:25going on are are worth weight in in
- 00:32:28hunger dice for me uh number one um two
- 00:32:33um have an ambition have a goal um make
- 00:32:36sure you fill out the parts of your
- 00:32:38character sheet that say ambition and
- 00:32:41desire want to do something can be
- 00:32:44shortterm I want to steal the princess
- 00:32:46car I want to seduce the princess ghoul
- 00:32:48I want to open a new pizza parlor
- 00:32:50whatever uh it can be super short term
- 00:32:53and it can be very long term I want to
- 00:32:54become Prince I want to find find who
- 00:32:57murdered my sire I demand to know the
- 00:33:00secret of whether Cain or Lilith is our
- 00:33:03progenitor have those goals pursue them
- 00:33:06actively pursue them eagerly that's
- 00:33:08number two and number three be generous
- 00:33:11to your other
- 00:33:12players um it's a tabletop role playing
- 00:33:17games in general in vampire in
- 00:33:19particular are collaborative stories
- 00:33:22they emerge in the moment together and
- 00:33:26the more gener generous you are to your
- 00:33:28fellow players at the table the more fun
- 00:33:30you will have um a very smart player who
- 00:33:34may or may not play an ostraat to
- 00:33:36sometimes with us at my tables once
- 00:33:38described it as getting the ball doing
- 00:33:41something fun and interesting with the
- 00:33:42ball and then immediately handing the
- 00:33:44ball to another player at the table so
- 00:33:46that they can do something fun and
- 00:33:48interesting with it and I find that's
- 00:33:50always true the more generous you are
- 00:33:51with the spotlight um the more it comes
- 00:33:54back to you and the more um fantastic
- 00:33:57fun you're going to have and now three
- 00:34:00things that you might not think of um
- 00:34:02check in with your Storyteller after the
- 00:34:04game is over ask how they felt about it
- 00:34:07did they did they feel it went well do
- 00:34:10they have any regrets um are they okay
- 00:34:13with um you know the emotional aspects
- 00:34:15and dimensions of it um to um ask them
- 00:34:21about what their plans are for the next
- 00:34:23story do they feel they have a direct
- 00:34:25plan or they need more communication
- 00:34:26from the players and three bring snacks
- 00:34:29we like snacks snacks are good what is
- 00:34:32your favorite snack on the during the
- 00:34:34actual
- 00:34:36play do I mean is there some
- 00:34:42doubt I mean let's see uh when a bottle
- 00:34:45of good red is not appropriate uh I
- 00:34:48really like um I like raw vegetables and
- 00:34:50dips like hummus or something like that
- 00:34:53that's really good crunchy carrots
- 00:34:54celery radishes that sort of thing
- 00:34:57things that have a lot of cellulose that
- 00:34:58make a lot of Snappy crunchy noise you
- 00:35:01heard it folks if you will ever play
- 00:35:03with Jason make sure to bring your
- 00:35:05veggies V or bottle of red or Bott of
- 00:35:09red we're going to go back to talking
- 00:35:11about red by the way everyone thank you
- 00:35:13so much for listening we are slowly
- 00:35:14getting to the end of the storytelling
- 00:35:17part of this conversation soon we will
- 00:35:18move to actual play questions and then
- 00:35:21general questions which you've asked um
- 00:35:23but we had one question or actually
- 00:35:25multiple questions from multiple users
- 00:35:28which I assembled into one um how do you
- 00:35:33go about writing a Chronicle when you
- 00:35:35aren't familiar with the city and would
- 00:35:37you consider running a streamed
- 00:35:39Chronicle in a place you haven't lived
- 00:35:41in and we had examples like Brazil or
- 00:35:44Spain uh would you ever consider
- 00:35:47that I would consider it but I would I
- 00:35:49would be careful
- 00:35:52um if we're running Chronicle in the
- 00:35:54here and now right there are Chronicles
- 00:35:56that are here here and now and there are
- 00:35:57Chronicles that are then and far
- 00:35:59historical that's that's an entirely
- 00:36:01different conversation but if we're
- 00:36:03talking about here and now would I
- 00:36:05consider running a Chronicle in a place
- 00:36:07I haven't lived in I would but I'd be
- 00:36:10cautious about it um you want to honor
- 00:36:15the place and the people who live there
- 00:36:18because every you know every place we we
- 00:36:21could visit on this globe has its own
- 00:36:24different tone Rhythm customs uh beliefs
- 00:36:28and characteristics and you want to do
- 00:36:29justice to it and there's only so much
- 00:36:32you can learn through internet research
- 00:36:34YouTube videos movies whatever I think
- 00:36:37you're perfectly fine in running
- 00:36:39Chronicles to a place you've never visit
- 00:36:41visited as long as you um give it that
- 00:36:46respect don't just buy into the
- 00:36:48stereotypes of a place dig a Little
- 00:36:50Deeper do some research online read
- 00:36:54books or better yet even uh read
- 00:36:57magazines that are published in that
- 00:36:59place most of which are readily online I
- 00:37:01don't think it's any secret that one of
- 00:37:03the things I like to do is I'd like to
- 00:37:05look for YouTube videos of people who
- 00:37:08wander around their cities with cameras
- 00:37:11or GoPros stuck to their heads and talk
- 00:37:14about what they see um I've spent a lot
- 00:37:17of time in my life in New York City but
- 00:37:19I haven't spent as much time in the
- 00:37:20Bronx as I have spent in other in other
- 00:37:23buus and so for New York by night I
- 00:37:26watched I don't know it must have been
- 00:37:28at least 100 hours of videos of people
- 00:37:32walking around the Bronx at night with
- 00:37:34their cell phone cameras or GoPros just
- 00:37:37talking to people in the burrow about
- 00:37:40what's life at night like here what do
- 00:37:43you think is happening what do you see
- 00:37:45what do you smell what's uh you know
- 00:37:48what are your concerns and that helped
- 00:37:50me um I think find a sense of place
- 00:37:53there are fair few major cities in the
- 00:37:55world you can't find that kind of
- 00:37:57resource
- 00:37:58online if you are thinking about running
- 00:38:01a city that is so far beyond your
- 00:38:04experience that there isn't much
- 00:38:06information on online then I think it's
- 00:38:08time to talk to people who actually do
- 00:38:11live there or have been there and get
- 00:38:13their opinions from it and think about
- 00:38:15why am I telling the story in this kind
- 00:38:17of place is it because I think the story
- 00:38:19really needs to be here or do I just
- 00:38:22think it sounds different enough that I
- 00:38:24want to explore it sight on scene
- 00:38:28um the only thing else I'll add to that
- 00:38:31is that um other roleplaying games set
- 00:38:35in the modern age can often be a
- 00:38:38resource there are a lot of in there are
- 00:38:41a lot of books um written for other role
- 00:38:43play games that you can tap into uh that
- 00:38:46provide you information about cities you
- 00:38:48haven't visited from a game design
- 00:38:51standpoint that can be
- 00:38:54useful that was kind of rambling I'm
- 00:38:56sorry no that was great I I I'm enjoying
- 00:38:59this I I feel like oh are you oh
- 00:39:01excellent good well as long as you're
- 00:39:03enjoying it I mission accomplished great
- 00:39:05fantastic I'll see I'll see you in the
- 00:39:07office tomorrow great I hope Wonder
- 00:39:10folks are also enjoying it as much as I
- 00:39:12am but uh this is actually something
- 00:39:14that I am struggling with and I wonder
- 00:39:15if you have some tips on this from Child
- 00:39:17of malav there's a question do you have
- 00:39:21any tips on ending a Chronicle and
- 00:39:24handling the loose threats that may
- 00:39:27[Music]
- 00:39:28oh yes and no um wow what a great
- 00:39:33question it's hard it's really difficult
- 00:39:36when it's time to say
- 00:39:38goodbye
- 00:39:40um I'm going to answer the question in
- 00:39:43Reverse I don't handle those threats I
- 00:39:46think it's absolutely okay arguably
- 00:39:50important that not every story get
- 00:39:53resolved neatly with final knowable
- 00:39:57answers I realize that's a conceit we
- 00:39:59have inherited from the media we consume
- 00:40:02all stories must pay off and they must
- 00:40:05have concrete definable answers that are
- 00:40:07definitive and irrefutable at the end of
- 00:40:09the 60 Minutes or the Eight Episodes of
- 00:40:12the Season or however long it or how
- 00:40:14many movies it is
- 00:40:16but the world of darkness is our world
- 00:40:19and in our world that's not how stories
- 00:40:22work they have messy endings endings are
- 00:40:27always more messy than the beginning you
- 00:40:29know where you are with the beginning
- 00:40:31but endings are always messy messy
- 00:40:34things and it's okay I think um not to
- 00:40:38wrap them all up neatly in a bow um I
- 00:40:41look at my colleagues again my
- 00:40:43touchdowns my
- 00:40:45Inspirations uh Bria Brennan and Matthew
- 00:40:48they don't wrap things up neatly in a
- 00:40:49bow there are unanswered questions there
- 00:40:53is vagueness things are open open to
- 00:40:56interpretation when they conclude I
- 00:40:58think that's not only okay I think it's
- 00:41:01required to remind us that these
- 00:41:03vampires these Kindred live in this
- 00:41:05world the world we inhabit where
- 00:41:08concrete answers Beyond refute are few
- 00:41:11and far between I think that only adds
- 00:41:14to the drama and kind of heightens the
- 00:41:17humanity of their experience I realize
- 00:41:19that may be a heretical point of view
- 00:41:21but I do believe
- 00:41:24it that's beautiful
- 00:41:27um and speak thank
- 00:41:29you I'm I'm glad you recorded
- 00:41:32it no it's really nice I I I like the
- 00:41:35you know the little pat on the back on
- 00:41:37all of us storytellers who have not tied
- 00:41:40all of the loose friends it's like it's
- 00:41:42okay think you should feel obliged at
- 00:41:44all when I when I end a Chronicle I talk
- 00:41:47to my players and I say this is ending
- 00:41:49we're nearing the conclusion what would
- 00:41:51you choose for your character all things
- 00:41:54being equal what's the what's the
- 00:41:56perfect resolution for
- 00:41:58you how do you want your character story
- 00:42:01to end given what we know and I will try
- 00:42:05to give an ending that approximates that
- 00:42:07I can't guarantee it because other
- 00:42:09characters may have other ideas about
- 00:42:11how they want things to end then they
- 00:42:13may be AC cross purposes to yours or the
- 00:42:17events of the story that have been set
- 00:42:19in motion May demand recognition that
- 00:42:22don't allow the perfect end of your
- 00:42:24story but I would try to take the
- 00:42:26player's desires and wishes into account
- 00:42:28too
- 00:42:31um when players have different endings
- 00:42:34that Clash sometimes you can resolve it
- 00:42:36by talking to the players together and
- 00:42:38saying these endings don't work together
- 00:42:40what do we do nine times out of 10 my
- 00:42:42experience has been the players are
- 00:42:44eager to find a
- 00:42:45compromise um and sometimes the players
- 00:42:48will say look I don't care I'm I'm happy
- 00:42:51end it as you see fit but just as it is
- 00:42:55with the the beginning of the chronicle
- 00:42:57that communication at the end is
- 00:42:59important
- 00:43:02too great and uh as much as we will
- 00:43:06touch upon some storytelling subjects
- 00:43:07later I want to conclude the
- 00:43:10storytelling section of our conversation
- 00:43:12with this extremely important uh
- 00:43:15question slightly reiterated um from
- 00:43:18rosc uh rospc I hope you will forgive me
- 00:43:21because you are going into very great
- 00:43:22detail and I think this is a really cool
- 00:43:24uh conversation in general
- 00:43:27but um we've had a recent Topic in the
- 00:43:29community and talking a lot about bleed
- 00:43:32at tables yeah absolutely we talk a lot
- 00:43:34of players bleed but is bleed something
- 00:43:38that also affects storytellers and do
- 00:43:40you have any tips on managing it and
- 00:43:42remaining empathetic with your players
- 00:43:44as you do so wow what a terrific
- 00:43:47question um um thank you RIS did I say
- 00:43:52that right R excuse me um what a great
- 00:43:56question um and this too could be a
- 00:43:58subject of a completely different
- 00:44:00conversation right I don't know if we
- 00:44:02have enough time to to cover it
- 00:44:03completely here the short answer is yes
- 00:44:05bleed absolutely affects
- 00:44:08storytellers um my long experience
- 00:44:12through you know the Millennia that I've
- 00:44:13been a Storyteller is that um bleed is
- 00:44:17um a neutral thing that happens and that
- 00:44:21um storytellers are subject to it just
- 00:44:23as much as players are for for better
- 00:44:25and For Worse positive and negative and
- 00:44:28how we manage it really you know is the
- 00:44:31is the measure of us
- 00:44:34um I have a number of different methods
- 00:44:37that I use to manage bleed from my
- 00:44:40tables um it always starts with a
- 00:44:42check-in at the very end of a session
- 00:44:46how did we do how is everyone feeling
- 00:44:48what are you getting from your emotions
- 00:44:51here what are your feelings telling you
- 00:44:53and my players do the same for me um um
- 00:44:56very recently we uh we were recording um
- 00:44:59Seattle by
- 00:45:00night and uh we had very very intense
- 00:45:04scenes if you're not watching it uh on
- 00:45:06Twitch or YouTube you should because as
- 00:45:08the season progresses some of the scenes
- 00:45:12get extraordinarily intense and deal
- 00:45:14with very heavy subjects and at the end
- 00:45:16of each episode we stopped deliberately
- 00:45:18to check in with each other and my
- 00:45:20players checked in with me to make sure
- 00:45:22I was feeling okay and that I was
- 00:45:24processing my emotions
- 00:45:26uh in a positive way um when ble when I
- 00:45:31feel bleed affecting me positively or
- 00:45:33negatively I like to write it out I keep
- 00:45:35a journal that is exclusively for gaming
- 00:45:37uh quite apart from My Business Journal
- 00:45:39I write out the the feelings I get there
- 00:45:42I talk to other players about them I
- 00:45:44talk to my colleagues um I think Marty
- 00:45:47is probably tired of hearing my
- 00:45:49conversations about the
- 00:45:51story it's like and then my players did
- 00:45:54this and I felt this way but that is
- 00:45:56very very important I think to share
- 00:45:58those with friends confidants and
- 00:46:00colleagues um and to be very very aware
- 00:46:04that we can feel bleed uh in either
- 00:46:07direction positive negative neutral up
- 00:46:09down XY axis and that it can affect us
- 00:46:12as as people we are unlike the
- 00:46:15characters we're telling stories for
- 00:46:17merely people and those sorts of
- 00:46:20emotions can affect us and are very
- 00:46:23important I find that it makes me a b
- 00:46:25better Storyteller when I'm empathetic
- 00:46:28with my players but it's very important
- 00:46:30to recognize too that um it requires
- 00:46:34self-care as
- 00:46:37well great thank you so much for for uh
- 00:46:40answering this one and and talking a
- 00:46:42little bit about it because I feel like
- 00:46:44that's a great conversation we should
- 00:46:46probably do more with later I'd be happy
- 00:46:47to have a totally separate uh
- 00:46:49conversation like this about bleed
- 00:46:51aspects for story
- 00:46:53talks yeah and and well with that in
- 00:46:56mind let's let us jump into the topic of
- 00:46:58actual place and let's start I
- 00:47:01will I will jump a little bit into a a
- 00:47:03very you know concrete question
- 00:47:06something that people are asking here
- 00:47:08and there I hear people um talking about
- 00:47:10it on all the social media platforms
- 00:47:12that I follow and check and that is
- 00:47:15Seattle by night and the question about
- 00:47:18Seattle which is um specifically from
- 00:47:22Triple 7 how much is Seal night podcast
- 00:47:26considered Canon and how it how it will
- 00:47:29it relate Bloodlines too
- 00:47:34H uh we don't have that kind of time so
- 00:47:38let me sum up um yes excellent
- 00:47:43question what the characters in Seattle
- 00:47:45by night are going through right now
- 00:47:48what they are experiencing their their
- 00:47:51trials and tribulations with Tully and
- 00:47:54nicks and evangelene and trying to get
- 00:47:58an audience with Lou and the Macar and
- 00:48:01all the thin Bloods and Benny and all of
- 00:48:03that are directly
- 00:48:06related to Bloodlines too think of it I
- 00:48:10guess as a kind of a Prelude these are
- 00:48:13things that are happening immediately
- 00:48:15before the action of bloodline 2
- 00:48:17Bloodlines 2 begins and when you play
- 00:48:19Bloodlines 2 you will immediately see
- 00:48:23the connections um they may not be
- 00:48:26obvious today as you're watching Seattle
- 00:48:29by night but they are there uh and they
- 00:48:31are direct
- 00:48:34um as for the peripheral events that
- 00:48:37happen around Seattle by night like
- 00:48:39what's happening with Tacoma um you know
- 00:48:42is Prince Gravenstein Kennan um that I
- 00:48:46don't know that I particularly can
- 00:48:48answer um that we might have to ask our
- 00:48:50our Bloodlines to colleagues uh what
- 00:48:54what their opinion is but certainly
- 00:48:57everything that's happening to the
- 00:48:58characters once they set foot in Seattle
- 00:49:02is related directly and irrevocably to
- 00:49:06the action in Bloodlines 2 when you
- 00:49:08watch Seattle by night you are watching
- 00:49:10the
- 00:49:13Bloodlines that is super
- 00:49:16exciting yeah you you say you say that
- 00:49:18now but we're only halfway through the
- 00:49:20season and you don't see what happens to
- 00:49:22Betty next so no we'll see I know right
- 00:49:26right Betty if you haven't watched
- 00:49:27episode four Betty's Betty's having a
- 00:49:29rough time of it at the moment I feel
- 00:49:31like we have to start making notes uh
- 00:49:33from these episodes and try to compare
- 00:49:35them
- 00:49:36later I I I think that's a very very
- 00:49:39good idea all right there there's even
- 00:49:43if you watch for it if you if you really
- 00:49:45watch for it and you gotta pay super
- 00:49:47close
- 00:49:49attention there are connections from
- 00:49:52Seattle by night to La by night and New
- 00:49:54York by night well but they are super
- 00:49:57subtle oo I know I'm going to poke hady
- 00:50:01about this I'm sure hady will tell me I
- 00:50:03mean if anyone can see them Hy
- 00:50:06can amazing um and we have a question
- 00:50:10from Tina that is uh like a little bit
- 00:50:13more about storytelling here but I feel
- 00:50:15like it plays well into what you do with
- 00:50:17your awesome actual place so in series
- 00:50:20like La by night or New York by night uh
- 00:50:22players rarely speak out of character
- 00:50:25and the tone is usually very seple and
- 00:50:27serious so how do you do this as a
- 00:50:30Storyteller and how do you avoid making
- 00:50:33your Chronicle into what we do in the
- 00:50:37shadows well first I want to say there's
- 00:50:40nothing wrong with a Chronicle that has
- 00:50:42what we do in the shadows as its tone I
- 00:50:45think if you watch Seattle by night
- 00:50:46you'll see a lot more dark humor uh than
- 00:50:49you would if you saw if you were
- 00:50:51watching La La by night or or New York
- 00:50:54by night right
- 00:50:55um vampire is a very big umbrella game
- 00:50:59and there is room for so many different
- 00:51:02tones and moods and um beanas from uh
- 00:51:05dark humor to uh hardcore humor uh from
- 00:51:09you know high high drama to
- 00:51:12Shakespearean drama and everything in
- 00:51:15between um so there isn't a wrong way to
- 00:51:18play it but nonetheless Tina's question
- 00:51:21is excellent and that is if you want to
- 00:51:24do something at your home table that is
- 00:51:26closer to La by night or New York by
- 00:51:28night where players are in character
- 00:51:31most of the time rarely break the fourth
- 00:51:33wall and even rules questions are in
- 00:51:36character it requires communication and
- 00:51:39a shared desire to do it not everybody
- 00:51:41wants to do that for um for La by night
- 00:51:46you know I like to think we I don't know
- 00:51:47if we pioneered this kind of actual Play
- 00:51:50Tone but certainly it was it was
- 00:51:52different at the time than what was
- 00:51:53being done um I talked to the players
- 00:51:56beforehand and I explained what I what I
- 00:51:58hoped to achieve I was very clear with
- 00:52:02with B Dave and Alex and with Cynthia
- 00:52:03Maria and Erica I'd like to try
- 00:52:06something that's somewhere between the
- 00:52:08tabletop we all know and love and
- 00:52:11liveaction role playing lar liveaction
- 00:52:14tabletop LARP top was the was the term
- 00:52:17that I coined at the time I'd like us to
- 00:52:19all try to stay in character as much as
- 00:52:21possible try to break the fourth wall as
- 00:52:24little as possible
- 00:52:25even when you're asking rules questions
- 00:52:27let's try to keep it in character if we
- 00:52:29can but it was an experiment we didn't
- 00:52:31know if it would work and we didn't know
- 00:52:34if it would convey the kind of tone we
- 00:52:36wanted or the story we wanted to tell
- 00:52:40together as it happened it did work and
- 00:52:43we figured out how to do it if you want
- 00:52:45to do that at home I cannot recommend
- 00:52:48strongly enough talking to your players
- 00:52:50first and saying I'd like to try
- 00:52:52something very high drama or very
- 00:52:55serious in which we all try to stay in
- 00:52:58character most of the time break
- 00:53:00character seldom and here's how we'll
- 00:53:02handle rules questions you may find your
- 00:53:04players don't want to do that or they're
- 00:53:06uncomfortable doing it or they're super
- 00:53:08excited about trying it and want to
- 00:53:11experiment with it if you do it my
- 00:53:15further recommendation is to be flexible
- 00:53:17at the table um and find your own
- 00:53:20comfort zone and level every table is
- 00:53:23different every group is different
- 00:53:25and finding the style and tone of play
- 00:53:27that works best for you and that gives
- 00:53:30you the most fun is where you win I
- 00:53:33don't think it's necessary to copy
- 00:53:35exactly La by night or any other game in
- 00:53:38order to have fun it's much more
- 00:53:40important to share the story that you
- 00:53:43want to tell
- 00:53:46together that's really fun um my my
- 00:53:49answers are getting longer I swear Marty
- 00:53:52that's great I I I'm enjoying this like
- 00:53:54it's a deep Di into into the brain of Mr
- 00:53:58notetaker you
- 00:54:01know I beg your pardon I'm sorry I I
- 00:54:04woke up with a little bit of a cold and
- 00:54:05a cough today I'm sorry oh no thank you
- 00:54:08so much for for being with us despite
- 00:54:10that I hope that we're not going to hire
- 00:54:12questions no no this is this is this is
- 00:54:15awesome I mean I have I have big
- 00:54:16opinions so go for it awesome so
- 00:54:19speaking of big opinions uh funs feds
- 00:54:23asks what is the character concept that
- 00:54:26was extremely unexpected but ended up
- 00:54:28being a personal favorite of yours do
- 00:54:30you have any sure fenza I had no idea
- 00:54:33what I was going to do I I had this very
- 00:54:36very vague idea in my head of what she
- 00:54:39was I had a sort of a paragraph of right
- 00:54:42up uh to begin with and then um in the
- 00:54:46moment uh we had to bring fear end it to
- 00:54:49life and I did not know what I was going
- 00:54:51to do it was about you know 7 Seconds of
- 00:54:54decision about about how will we do this
- 00:54:58in a way that will be fun and cool and
- 00:55:00memorable for people but also good for
- 00:55:02the players and to give them an idea
- 00:55:04because we hadn't talked about it we
- 00:55:06hadn't talked about fenza beforehand I
- 00:55:08knew that the player B Dave Walters knew
- 00:55:11the fenza could come into play because
- 00:55:13they had a connection but they had he
- 00:55:15had no idea what I was going to do with
- 00:55:16it and it was a very spur the moment
- 00:55:20decision about how to characterize it
- 00:55:23and um sometimes that works right that
- 00:55:25spur the moment go for it go For Broke
- 00:55:28moment create something much larger than
- 00:55:31you thought it would be and I don't know
- 00:55:35how to describe this um but you know it
- 00:55:38when you feel it you know when it lands
- 00:55:40well when your players are having fun
- 00:55:42with it when they're engaging with it
- 00:55:44when they want to build on what you have
- 00:55:47offered to them in a way that is fun you
- 00:55:49know that you've done something cool um
- 00:55:52so I think um that's probably the best
- 00:55:56example I can think of at the
- 00:55:58moment totally
- 00:56:00unexpected fenza is uh yeah she should
- 00:56:04probably be a ringtone right uh she she
- 00:56:07has her own life and she scares even me
- 00:56:09we we should make a collection of
- 00:56:11ringtones of
- 00:56:13f so but she was she was extremely
- 00:56:16unexpected I had no idea what was going
- 00:56:17to come out of my mouth before I said it
- 00:56:19wow it's like you were possessed by the
- 00:56:21ghost of f hey look this was this was
- 00:56:24live on camera right you have to
- 00:56:27remember that the La by night the first
- 00:56:29three seasons we did were absolutely
- 00:56:30live there was no room for error it was
- 00:56:33like you know what the 1950s era of
- 00:56:37television when you know if you made a
- 00:56:39mistake you know the entire country saw
- 00:56:41it so you really the the adrenaline
- 00:56:44racing through your system I think
- 00:56:46created some strange happy
- 00:56:49coincidences speaking of happy
- 00:56:51coincidences sashel is asking do you
- 00:56:53have any favorite moments from La by
- 00:56:55night that you like oh my gosh I mean
- 00:56:58over five seasons where to begin we
- 00:57:01don't have that kind of time so let me
- 00:57:04sum up I mean all of my actual plays La
- 00:57:07by Night New York by Night Seattle by
- 00:57:09Night the one shots I've done with with
- 00:57:10rolling stone and IGN and others they're
- 00:57:13all a joy right because they all
- 00:57:16help add an additional layer of of cool
- 00:57:20interesting uh drama and action to to
- 00:57:23vampire the Masquerade so they're all
- 00:57:25fun but um favorite moments I have two
- 00:57:30favorite moments I'll talk about briefly
- 00:57:31from La B night number one
- 00:57:34um the episode in which I set the uh
- 00:57:38character's Haven on fire was Hy will
- 00:57:41know exactly what season an episode that
- 00:57:43was off the top of her head because I
- 00:57:45don't uh but if she's listening she will
- 00:57:48know um I told the players absolutely
- 00:57:52nothing uh they just sat down and they
- 00:57:54noticed some weird lights at the foot of
- 00:57:56the of the their tables and I just said
- 00:57:58oh those are those are there from the
- 00:58:00previous show I don't know what those
- 00:58:01are for um and we started the show and
- 00:58:04we turned the lights on and I told them
- 00:58:06your Haven's on fire you better do
- 00:58:08something fast um that was great because
- 00:58:11the players were terrified and they knew
- 00:58:13that they could die because they had no
- 00:58:16no plot or script immunity and that
- 00:58:19drama I think uh really shown through
- 00:58:23the second most memorable moment again
- 00:58:26relied on secrecy and that was when
- 00:58:28talisen dropped in as um as Annabelle
- 00:58:32sire um when Erica is she and I created
- 00:58:37the character of Annabelle Erica was
- 00:58:39very clear about what she wanted she
- 00:58:41said I don't want to know anything I
- 00:58:43don't know much about vampire the
- 00:58:44Masquerade yet I want to help the
- 00:58:47audience learn vampire through me so
- 00:58:51let's not let my character know a great
- 00:58:53deal of information including maybe who
- 00:58:55sired me it was a difficult violent
- 00:58:58moment I don't have a clear recollection
- 00:59:00maybe it will come back to me but don't
- 00:59:03tell me who my sire is surprise me so I
- 00:59:06said okay
- 00:59:09and he's like okay you say that all
- 00:59:12right fine uh and uh so of course my my
- 00:59:15first call was to Talis and and said do
- 00:59:17you want to do this um and talison being
- 00:59:22who he is said of course yeah damn right
- 00:59:25I do uh give me a character sheet so I I
- 00:59:28gave him the character sheet in the
- 00:59:30background and I said do your worst and
- 00:59:33I dare say that talison took the worst
- 00:59:34character of I've ever written and made
- 00:59:36it even more horrific um and on the
- 00:59:41night we filmed that episode we didn't
- 00:59:43say anything talison was just there on
- 00:59:44the set as though he as he was many
- 00:59:47times before nobody thought anything of
- 00:59:49it and the moment the audience learns
- 00:59:52Who The Sire is is the the moment that
- 00:59:55Erica and the cast learn when talison
- 00:59:57walks into the set sits down and says
- 01:00:00you know this is me that's when we all
- 01:00:02know wow that that kind of impact is
- 01:00:06really difficult to pull off well and if
- 01:00:08it if it wasn't talison I'm not sure we
- 01:00:11could have done it as effectively um
- 01:00:13because I trusted him absolutely
- 01:00:15implicitly I knew I could just hand him
- 01:00:17the sheet in the background and say do
- 01:00:19your worst buddy and he did and um the
- 01:00:23moment it created
- 01:00:25I
- 01:00:26think was exemplary of what vampire the
- 01:00:29Masquerade can be in terms of almost
- 01:00:32Shakespearean
- 01:00:35drama that's amazing I love hearing the
- 01:00:38story um and I'm not sure I've ever told
- 01:00:41that before actually not in that way
- 01:00:43there's more to it but we don't have
- 01:00:45time for that kind of stuff tonight so
- 01:00:46maybe another evening okay now we have
- 01:00:48to have another evening because this is
- 01:00:50too fun there's there there's more to it
- 01:00:52actually uh well uh we have multiple
- 01:00:56users asking you about some things that
- 01:00:58you you previewed uh from La by Night
- 01:01:01New York by night when you were like
- 01:01:02posting some some notes posting your
- 01:01:05table people were able to see uh your
- 01:01:08masquerade track as well as of course
- 01:01:11here the way that you do the beasts of
- 01:01:14each of the players how do you use them
- 01:01:16in the game where did the idea come
- 01:01:20from those are Marty those are two
- 01:01:23really different questions can I give
- 01:01:24two different answers of course let's
- 01:01:26start with the Masquerade
- 01:01:29tracker um the Masquerade tracker is an
- 01:01:33idea that came to me when we were
- 01:01:35building um vampire the M grade fifth
- 01:01:38edition and we decided that
- 01:01:41certain certain traits on the character
- 01:01:43sheet would be tracked like willpower it
- 01:01:46would be a set of boxes that could you
- 01:01:49know tick off uh according to certain
- 01:01:52conditions being met in the game like
- 01:01:54Humanity um like damage like health and
- 01:01:58as conditions
- 01:02:00worsened the consequences become more
- 01:02:02dire and I was in I think it was at the
- 01:02:07beginning of season two of Val by night
- 01:02:10when I
- 01:02:12realized oh we're in the middle of a
- 01:02:14scene here they're doing something that
- 01:02:16is risking the Masquerade if there is
- 01:02:18anyone to see it we should be tracking
- 01:02:21this how do I do it so I quickly
- 01:02:23scrolled five box is on a piece of paper
- 01:02:25in front of me and I decided in the
- 01:02:27moment that this is the Masquerade
- 01:02:29tracker and if certain conditions are
- 01:02:31met it takes damage if other conditions
- 01:02:34are met it takes aggravated damage I had
- 01:02:37already had in mind that I knew that the
- 01:02:39second Inquisition was watching I knew
- 01:02:41the FBI and engent Handler were in the
- 01:02:44city we had seen them before even yet um
- 01:02:47but they didn't know much yet and I
- 01:02:49decided that with every risk the
- 01:02:52characters took that met a certain set
- 01:02:55of conditions the Masquerade tracker
- 01:02:57would take damage just like Health just
- 01:02:59like whop and when a certain level
- 01:03:02damage was reached an event would
- 01:03:05trigger um I can't tell you that um I
- 01:03:10planned this very cleverly beforehand
- 01:03:13with lots of preparation it was a very
- 01:03:15spur ofth the- moment idea that I
- 01:03:18latched on to quickly because I needed
- 01:03:20to find a way to make sure that there
- 01:03:23were consequences reactions that were
- 01:03:25happening in real time live on screen
- 01:03:28and that's what I came up with sometimes
- 01:03:30U terrified desperation gives you really
- 01:03:34great
- 01:03:34answers and believe me uh for all the
- 01:03:37seasons that we were alive terrified
- 01:03:39desperation was my
- 01:03:41co-pilot it's interesting because I
- 01:03:43think it also happened before
- 01:03:46hiring danger system was developed so so
- 01:03:49it's it kind of fits into it it does I
- 01:03:52mean I mean Justin ail who is the
- 01:03:54developer of that book and I had a long
- 01:03:56lengthy conversation about how do
- 01:03:59trackers of that sort work how can you
- 01:04:01bring them into play what are the
- 01:04:03consequences of them and so a very tiny
- 01:04:07amount of the of the work that I did on
- 01:04:09that I think made it way into Hunter
- 01:04:12that's great and well now about the
- 01:04:14Beast people were asking um do you talk
- 01:04:17with your players first about what kind
- 01:04:20of a tone their Beast should have or no
- 01:04:22no no absolutely not never okay um
- 01:04:27uh full disclosure of course this isn't
- 01:04:30something that is explicit in vampire
- 01:04:33the Masquerade in any Edition not in
- 01:04:35fifth edition or before but it's
- 01:04:37something I've been doing
- 01:04:39since you know since the Michi were in
- 01:04:42charge of Renaissance Italy um I have
- 01:04:46always done this uh since I first
- 01:04:49started vampire the Masquerade way back
- 01:04:51when I always felt that the Beast
- 01:04:54was a voice a Persona a second
- 01:04:59Consciousness and should be felt at the
- 01:05:02table that the Beast should um manifest
- 01:05:06in some physical way and the reason I
- 01:05:07felt that way is because I felt it
- 01:05:10helped the player
- 01:05:12understand the relationship between
- 01:05:15humanity and the Beast and to make him
- 01:05:16more visceral and immediate and make the
- 01:05:21consequences more
- 01:05:22real and and so I've been doing this for
- 01:05:25a very long time when we did La by Night
- 01:05:28season 1 and we the cameras were rolling
- 01:05:32live and we got to the moment where we
- 01:05:35had our first failed hunger check it
- 01:05:39never occurred to me not to do it
- 01:05:41because because I'd always been doing it
- 01:05:43um it always seemed to me obvious that
- 01:05:46the Beast should be a
- 01:05:48Persona um that manifests in times of
- 01:05:52stress and desperate need
- 01:05:55generally the Beast is the voice of The
- 01:05:57Sire of the character but not
- 01:06:00always sometimes the Beast is The Sire
- 01:06:02of somebody very very important to the
- 01:06:04character that they've disappointed or
- 01:06:06that they've wronged or that has been in
- 01:06:09some sort of important object lesson in
- 01:06:11the
- 01:06:13characters a bigger pardon in the
- 01:06:16character's life or unlife but generally
- 01:06:18it's um generally it's The Sire or the
- 01:06:22grandsire interesting
- 01:06:24well and I I honestly think it provides
- 01:06:29um a really poignant Counterpoint to the
- 01:06:34hum to the situation of humanity that
- 01:06:37the character is in here you are
- 01:06:39suspended in on life you're
- 01:06:43outside the natural order nothing about
- 01:06:46you makes sense absolutely nothing you
- 01:06:49there is no scientific law that can
- 01:06:51explain what you are or how how you are
- 01:06:55that's Carl San can't help you
- 01:06:58here and worse than that there is this
- 01:07:02weird metaphysical presence in your head
- 01:07:04urging you to do terrible things in
- 01:07:07moments of stress and
- 01:07:09weakness to me that is the height of
- 01:07:12personal horror that vampire
- 01:07:14promises so to I I wouldn't want I
- 01:07:17wouldn't want to hear the beast in my
- 01:07:19head would you yeah so so to dig deeper
- 01:07:22the reason why you are not talking with
- 01:07:24your players about it beforehand is the
- 01:07:26horror element of it right you want them
- 01:07:28to be to be scared of their Beast that
- 01:07:30comes out of nowhere as a SPC basically
- 01:07:34I mean I don't want to scare the players
- 01:07:35especially I mean especially I mean
- 01:07:38consent and safety in the table is super
- 01:07:39important I wouldn't do anything that
- 01:07:41the players had already indicated wasn't
- 01:07:43appropriate for them it wasn't within
- 01:07:45their comfort zone but what I want to do
- 01:07:47is I want to introduce an unexpected
- 01:07:50element to them that they get to play
- 01:07:52with suddenly they hear the Beast for
- 01:07:54the first time at the table and they get
- 01:07:56to decide how to react am I defiant am I
- 01:07:59quiescent am I subservient am I angry uh
- 01:08:03am I loving how do I react when I hear
- 01:08:06this beloved Voice or hated voice in my
- 01:08:08head um the player gets the agency of
- 01:08:11how to respond and what they want to do
- 01:08:13with it the player can always say I
- 01:08:16totally run with what the Beast is going
- 01:08:18to tell me and give into it or they can
- 01:08:20be defiant and reject the Beast and that
- 01:08:23drama plays out at the table it's super
- 01:08:26important that whatever voice um the
- 01:08:28Beast has the agency of how to act in
- 01:08:31the moment still stays with the
- 01:08:34player the Beast can't make the player
- 01:08:36do
- 01:08:38anything that's
- 01:08:40awesome I I love this I I I'm definitely
- 01:08:44I love I love it too I realize it isn't
- 01:08:46canonical but I it's hard for me to
- 01:08:48imagine playing Vampire without it
- 01:08:50honestly I think because of you a lot of
- 01:08:51people have adopted this in Chronicles
- 01:08:54and it's been more
- 01:08:57widespread I'm glad to hear it well a
- 01:09:01lot ofun I'm going to conclude the
- 01:09:04actual play chapter of our conversation
- 01:09:06with a question that was asked the most
- 01:09:08often and is being asked everywhere and
- 01:09:11that is of course any news about the
- 01:09:13next season of New York by nights yes of
- 01:09:17course so I have the most amazing and
- 01:09:19best players in the world uh at my table
- 01:09:22they are very patient with me they are
- 01:09:24super generous um and they realize that
- 01:09:26things don't always align the way we
- 01:09:29would want them um what I can tell you
- 01:09:31at the moment is that New York by Night
- 01:09:33season 3 is um definitely going to
- 01:09:36happen it's in pre-production right now
- 01:09:39and what that means is story development
- 01:09:41set development
- 01:09:42studio um creative development is
- 01:09:45happening um it's happening a little bit
- 01:09:47more slower than I would like um I'm
- 01:09:49confident in saying we will have
- 01:09:52pre-production pretty much worked out
- 01:09:54before the end of this year Well at
- 01:09:55least by Christmas and that this and
- 01:09:58unfortunately although we thought we
- 01:10:00would get the First episodes um live and
- 01:10:02online this year uh they're going to
- 01:10:04happen in q1 next year and I think that
- 01:10:09every single one of the characters
- 01:10:11you've come to love and Andor hate in
- 01:10:15New York by night will be present for
- 01:10:17season
- 01:10:193 thank you so much for answering this
- 01:10:21one uh I know it's been very stressful
- 01:10:23to make sure that everything is done on
- 01:10:26time and and with everything that you
- 01:10:28have to do to make this but absolutely I
- 01:10:30I wish it were faster and to be
- 01:10:32absolutely clear and transparent all the
- 01:10:35delay is on is on me uh uh and on on the
- 01:10:39studio and on scheduling and things
- 01:10:41beyond the control of Mortals or
- 01:10:43Immortals and nothing more than that all
- 01:10:48right thank you so much uh Jason for
- 01:10:50this info we are going to wait for New
- 01:10:52York by night to come by back early next
- 01:10:54year and now to conclude with general
- 01:10:58questions um and I'm going to start with
- 01:11:02with a little bit of a I don't know sad
- 01:11:04one maybe uh from Elmer who asked what's
- 01:11:08your biggest regrets with world of
- 01:11:11Darkness if there was one thing that you
- 01:11:13could back from any addition whether you
- 01:11:16were involved or not
- 01:11:18what I
- 01:11:20know where to begin
- 01:11:23[Laughter]
- 01:11:25Elmer you don't play fair whoever you
- 01:11:27are
- 01:11:29um biggest biggest regret from any
- 01:11:33addition whether I was involved or oh
- 01:11:35this is where I get to blame other
- 01:11:36people
- 01:11:37[Music]
- 01:11:39huh let's not do that let's not do that
- 01:11:42not to be Ministry tosy I'm not going to
- 01:11:44be like yes do it do it no that's that's
- 01:11:47that's not in my nature let's let's
- 01:11:49let's let's have radical transparency
- 01:11:51and be very clear and honest about this
- 01:11:53um I
- 01:11:57think I think if I could go back and do
- 01:11:59anything over again in all the years and
- 01:12:02all the additions I've been involved
- 01:12:04with it would
- 01:12:06be probably to make character
- 01:12:10creation easier faster and more
- 01:12:13understandable in Vampire fifth edition
- 01:12:16um I'm super crazy proud of everything
- 01:12:20we've done in fifth edition in many ways
- 01:12:22it is you know a culmination of so many
- 01:12:26years of learning and experience and
- 01:12:27trial by error uh for vampire but I
- 01:12:31think uh in many ways our ambition you
- 01:12:36exceeded our time limit uh and the
- 01:12:40character creation part of V5 if you
- 01:12:42just open the core book and read it is
- 01:12:46is not easy it's not as friendly as it
- 01:12:48should be now
- 01:12:50fortunately we have benefits like um um
- 01:12:53things that you've created Marty flow
- 01:12:55sheets spreadsheets infographics that
- 01:12:57show people how to create a character um
- 01:13:00super fast and easy we have the benefit
- 01:13:03of the clan quiz again that you've
- 01:13:05created that uh can help new um new
- 01:13:09vampire players find the clan that most
- 01:13:12reflects what they want to play quickly
- 01:13:14we have the players guide which um
- 01:13:16redefines character creation into
- 01:13:18something much more uh quick and easy
- 01:13:22and we have um the advantage of things
- 01:13:25like uh Demi plane the vampire Nexus
- 01:13:28which has our online character
- 01:13:31generation and creation management
- 01:13:33system which is I don't know about you
- 01:13:35fellow storytellers but for me it's a
- 01:13:37it's really a Kee send I've like
- 01:13:39transcribed every single NPC I've ever
- 01:13:41run into Demi plane already yeah huge
- 01:13:45timesaver for me um yeah I think that's
- 01:13:49the one that's the biggest regret I have
- 01:13:51is that we didn't make it simpler faster
- 01:13:53and EAS
- 01:13:54here yeah understandable I I want to
- 01:13:56shout out here because I've recently
- 01:13:58checked out uh because at home I have
- 01:14:00the old uh V5 core books which I got at
- 01:14:04the very beginning when V5 released and
- 01:14:08uh when I was in the office I checked
- 01:14:09the the new version from Renegade uh the
- 01:14:11repr print and it actually does have um
- 01:14:14summarized crack creation at the end
- 01:14:16which I have noticed before happy to see
- 01:14:18it it does it's it's on the fly leaf at
- 01:14:21the end before the end papers but um but
- 01:14:24even so I think that um I think that if
- 01:14:27if Time Chance the Stars had aligned a
- 01:14:30little bit better excuse me um we would
- 01:14:35have made the character creation process
- 01:14:37just uh easier and faster if we had a
- 01:14:41choice sure um and now we had multiple
- 01:14:44users um asking uh you about your
- 01:14:48personal view on on different additions
- 01:14:50of vamper De masquerade and yeah yeah
- 01:14:53yeah there's a lot of questions about
- 01:14:54that we have you know people here who
- 01:14:56play um all the editions basically and
- 01:14:59um we also recently had a very
- 01:15:01interesting survey in the community on
- 01:15:04xter from I I believe Tia was the one
- 01:15:06who who who made it originally which was
- 01:15:10what do you want from fifth edition
- 01:15:12survey um so people are wondering what
- 01:15:16would you like to see uh in fifth
- 01:15:18edition and is there anything from the
- 01:15:20previous editions that you miss that you
- 01:15:22would like to see or introduce my oh my
- 01:15:24goodness
- 01:15:25um uh ask somebody El ask anybody else
- 01:15:29please um to be
- 01:15:33fair yes okay
- 01:15:37um if I could wave a magic wand and do
- 01:15:41anything um are there magic wands in
- 01:15:44world of Darkness there certainly are
- 01:15:46but I think the technocracy frowns on
- 01:15:48those sorts of things um refence
- 01:15:52ch hey you know what the legendary
- 01:15:55napkin is right here right here with me
- 01:15:57as a matter of
- 01:15:58fact looking right looking right at it
- 01:16:01right now this is going to blow out with
- 01:16:03Mage discussion for the next week Jason
- 01:16:05what have you done we we we we can talk
- 01:16:08about the napkin that's in front of me
- 01:16:10as as we close out but I don't think
- 01:16:12anybody's going to like it very much um
- 01:16:15the uh I think if I could if I could
- 01:16:18wave a magic wand and do
- 01:16:20anything
- 01:16:22um what do you want from
- 01:16:25V5 I want I would love to make
- 01:16:28storytelling easier onboarding is a
- 01:16:31Storyteller easier for anybody who is
- 01:16:34curious about storytelling anybody who
- 01:16:36even wants to dabble in it who wants to
- 01:16:38dip their toe into storytelling I would
- 01:16:40like to make it easier and gentler uh
- 01:16:43process and the same with playing I
- 01:16:45would like to make uh learning to play
- 01:16:47finding a group to play with and having
- 01:16:50a fun experience playing just a little
- 01:16:52bit easier
- 01:16:53we live in a world in which all of us
- 01:16:55are so incredibly busy and stressed and
- 01:17:00anxious and we have so many demands on
- 01:17:01our time 247 that I mean you know any
- 01:17:05friction is too much friction for
- 01:17:08everything whether we do I would like to
- 01:17:10ease those frictions for people who are
- 01:17:12curious about telling stories and
- 01:17:14playing these games I don't have
- 01:17:16specific concrete steps I would take at
- 01:17:19this moment now that I'm on the spot to
- 01:17:21do that but the over all goal would be
- 01:17:23making it simpler faster easier get to
- 01:17:27the fun part faster for everyone start
- 01:17:30telling the story with your friends
- 01:17:32faster and easier get to the
- 01:17:34collaborative story generation faster um
- 01:17:39how we do that exactly I'm not entirely
- 01:17:42sure but a lot of my brain power is
- 01:17:45already consumed with figuring that out
- 01:17:49um and I think another another big chunk
- 01:17:52of my brain is thinking about what do we
- 01:17:55need next from V5 V5 is almost 5 years
- 01:17:57old now um it's actually no it's 5 years
- 01:18:01old it's August yeah this August it was
- 01:18:03five years old so um it's been out there
- 01:18:06half a decade and I think a lot every
- 01:18:09day about what do we need to do next I
- 01:18:12honestly think that we need more um we
- 01:18:15need to give more attention to setting
- 01:18:17what is the what is the current
- 01:18:19situation tonight in various places of
- 01:18:22the world what is happening in Singapore
- 01:18:24what is happening in uh koala lumur what
- 01:18:28is happening in Prague what is happening
- 01:18:30in uh in London now that it's been some
- 01:18:32time since the fall of London um you
- 01:18:34know what is happening in Buenos arees
- 01:18:38um what is the current situation because
- 01:18:41I think that players want to know what
- 01:18:44the current situation is they don't want
- 01:18:46they don't necessarily want or need to
- 01:18:48know thousands of pages of detail in any
- 01:18:51given City but they want want to know
- 01:18:53where it starts so that they can then
- 01:18:55springboard their own stories from those
- 01:18:59situations you know who is the prince of
- 01:19:01Vancouver BC tonight great thank you for
- 01:19:04letting me know I will now tell my own
- 01:19:06story with my players jumping off this
- 01:19:08Baseline I really do think we need to
- 01:19:11develop the setting of the world a
- 01:19:12little bit more uh in all directions of
- 01:19:15the compass and give people um a little
- 01:19:19bit more information about what is
- 01:19:21happening because we know
- 01:19:23but our resources are limited we can't
- 01:19:25always get that information out there um
- 01:19:29as much as we want what's happening with
- 01:19:30the Gana War what's happening with the
- 01:19:32beckoning what is happening with the
- 01:19:34second Inquisition all those answers are
- 01:19:36known and knowable but we we need to get
- 01:19:39that information out there likewise
- 01:19:42what's happening with the Clans it's
- 01:19:44been a certain amount of time since the
- 01:19:46fall of London since the uh first and
- 01:19:48second conventions of Prague since the
- 01:19:50fall of the Vienna Chantry it caused
- 01:19:53this tremendous upheaval and realignment
- 01:19:56um among the Clans is that still true
- 01:19:59tonight um are the Clans drifting
- 01:20:01farther apart are they coalescing
- 01:20:03farther together what does it mean to be
- 01:20:06bruha now tonight as opposed to 10 or 20
- 01:20:10years ago what does it mean to be vent
- 01:20:12true are those rivalries new are they
- 01:20:14still
- 01:20:16extent excuse me
- 01:20:20um what what does it mean when I'm in
- 01:20:22embraced into Clan Renos now um and I
- 01:20:27think leaning into those those clan um
- 01:20:30those Clan interests and those um Clan
- 01:20:34World World Views if you will I think um
- 01:20:37is beneficial and I think it's time to
- 01:20:39go there now now that the dust has
- 01:20:41settled after the Vienna Chantry has
- 01:20:44done the big firework uh it's time to
- 01:20:46look at all of that so that's what I
- 01:20:48would do looking forward to that that
- 01:20:51would be really interesting now wait a
- 01:20:52minute wait a minute you just asked what
- 01:20:53I would do
- 01:20:55that that is by no means a guarantee you
- 01:20:58know I am I am I am one very elderly
- 01:21:00Kindred uh but I think I I think if I
- 01:21:03could do anything that's what I would do
- 01:21:05I would Define the world a little bit
- 01:21:07more sharply so that our players could
- 01:21:10then tell their own stories in it I see
- 01:21:15I think that's that's really really fun
- 01:21:17and uh I think it corresponds well with
- 01:21:19with uh the survey that we've seen also
- 01:21:21uh there's a lot of Co answers there um
- 01:21:25now uh that we have a question from
- 01:21:28Moore that is very interesting and I
- 01:21:30feel like a lot of people are asking
- 01:21:32about it after werewolf released after
- 01:21:34Hunter released sure um with both of
- 01:21:37these uh settings out how would you
- 01:21:39recommend doing crossplot games with the
- 01:21:41fifth edition
- 01:21:45settings I mean if you must
- 01:21:50um I'm I'm trying to decide I'm I'm
- 01:21:53there are so many ways to answer this
- 01:21:55question I'm trying to decide in the
- 01:21:56time we have left what is actually
- 01:21:58useful for the people who are who are
- 01:22:00listening what what would benefit them
- 01:22:02at their
- 01:22:03tables Jon Carl
- 01:22:06do Marty are you are you in the office
- 01:22:10tomorrow because there are going to be
- 01:22:11words of of multiple syllables I am
- 01:22:15moving very Speedy vacations I am not
- 01:22:18going to
- 01:22:20be see how it is see how it is family
- 01:22:23you see how it is
- 01:22:25okay F come all the way to Stockholm and
- 01:22:29this is this is what happens
- 01:22:31um what would Jason Carl do
- 01:22:35so I'm of the opinion that each of these
- 01:22:39games vampire Hunter werewolf and games
- 01:22:41yet to
- 01:22:42come all inform each other depending on
- 01:22:46the story that the players want to
- 01:22:49tell and it's super important if you're
- 01:22:51going to mix a match to have that
- 01:22:53conversation with the players first it's
- 01:22:56one thing to springing a werewolf NPC on
- 01:22:58vampire players or a mage NPC on
- 01:23:01werewolf players Etc that's all that
- 01:23:05that information is provided already in
- 01:23:07the core books uh of the world of
- 01:23:10darkness and you don't need me to help
- 01:23:11you with that but if you're going to go
- 01:23:13farther than that if you're going to
- 01:23:16have vampire and werewolf player
- 01:23:19characters at the same table or good
- 01:23:21heavens Hunters at the same table then
- 01:23:24you need I think to do extra special um
- 01:23:28preliminary care with your players and
- 01:23:30talk about what that means because
- 01:23:31they're not completely compatible they
- 01:23:34have different worldviews they don't
- 01:23:36believe or want the same things there
- 01:23:38are reasons for them to work together in
- 01:23:40a collaborative story but those reasons
- 01:23:42are pretty sharply defined and generally
- 01:23:46shortterm there are longer term reasons
- 01:23:49to do that and that are of course
- 01:23:51reasons of of family comradeship debt
- 01:23:56romance Revenge enmity and all the gamut
- 01:24:01of human
- 01:24:03emotion the best crossover stories I
- 01:24:05think are very purposeful they're not
- 01:24:08random a a vampire a werewolf and a
- 01:24:11hunter do not happen to walk into a bar
- 01:24:13and start a Chronicle if you want to do
- 01:24:15it with that way fantastic and U more
- 01:24:18power to you but I think that the more
- 01:24:21powerful and more satisfying story is
- 01:24:24much more deliberate and personal this
- 01:24:27vampire and that werewolf and these
- 01:24:30hunters in specific and in particular
- 01:24:33have a story to tell that happens in
- 01:24:36this place and at this time and nine
- 01:24:40times out of 10 the right people in the
- 01:24:42wrong place at the wrong
- 01:24:45time become Heroes for about 30 seconds
- 01:24:49uh and then it all falls apart
- 01:24:53that's probably not a very useful nuts
- 01:24:55and bolts answer to the players who are
- 01:24:57asking yeah but how do I make rage dice
- 01:24:59work with Hunger dice for that I don't
- 01:25:01have an answer um they're not meant to
- 01:25:04be 100% compatible in real time at your
- 01:25:07table but the themes of these games
- 01:25:11the humanity versus the Beast
- 01:25:15the uh destruction of the world versus
- 01:25:18the preservation of the future and how
- 01:25:21do I keep my neighborhood safe from
- 01:25:23Monsters those overarching themes do
- 01:25:26work together in Broad strokes and those
- 01:25:29stories you can
- 01:25:31tell and that was about two minutes
- 01:25:33longer than I intended to give you it's
- 01:25:35it's great I am enjoying it and I am
- 01:25:38secretly planning in my head what I
- 01:25:40would do in order to have a romantic
- 01:25:42adventure with a werewolf and the
- 01:25:44vampire oh yeah absolutely right I mean
- 01:25:47that story I got that story written in
- 01:25:48my brain already I'm like okay it won't
- 01:25:51be New York by Night season three but it
- 01:25:53will happen at some point it has to uh
- 01:25:57but okay let's we have to unfortunately
- 01:25:59we are already over time but uh let's
- 01:26:01have some fun um so real Sly marbo is
- 01:26:06asking about your collection of Cups and
- 01:26:08where did you get them my what
- 01:26:11collection of your mugs like the spooky
- 01:26:13mugs and cups oh coffee C oh okay from
- 01:26:18okay never mind where my brain went
- 01:26:21that's not worth talking about um okay
- 01:26:25my coffee cups yes of course what else
- 01:26:28would you mean
- 01:26:30um I got my I got my spooky coffee cups
- 01:26:35at a little tiny local Boutique in
- 01:26:38Burbank California uh I like to buy
- 01:26:41local whenever humanly possible I don't
- 01:26:44like to buy from big box stores big
- 01:26:46chain stores it's unavoidable in the in
- 01:26:48the way we live in the world but when I
- 01:26:50can avoid it I do avoid it and all of
- 01:26:54those weird spooky strange coffee cups
- 01:26:56came from a very tiny retail store near
- 01:26:58where I live I don't know if that's
- 01:27:00helpful or not I mean it is helpful for
- 01:27:03me because I am coming there one day and
- 01:27:05I will
- 01:27:07buy Burbank by night I don't know I I
- 01:27:11think you're gonna find it's full of
- 01:27:12werewolves I I'm fine with that uh but
- 01:27:16we're going to wrap it up with probably
- 01:27:17one of I I don't know but maybe one of
- 01:27:19your favorite kinds of questions um we
- 01:27:22had a question from m McGee bing bong
- 01:27:25and the greaty ghost
- 01:27:2772 MC mcge Bing Bong yes are you serious
- 01:27:33yes mie Bing
- 01:27:36Bong um so what is your favorite wine
- 01:27:40and what wine is best served with
- 01:27:42Seattle by night oh wow an easy question
- 01:27:45and an impossible question holy okay
- 01:27:50um what is my favorite wine that's super
- 01:27:52easy my favorite wine in the entire
- 01:27:54world is Cabernet Fran um if I can't get
- 01:27:58a good cabernet Fran I'll get a good
- 01:28:00cabernet soan but I like Cabernet Fran
- 01:28:02because it is um incredibly
- 01:28:06complicated it's really subtle in Nuance
- 01:28:09it's easy to screw it up and make a bad
- 01:28:10one but when it's done right it is
- 01:28:13intense and complex and brooding it is
- 01:28:16truly the Batman of wines in many ways
- 01:28:19and is the Batman of wines um and I
- 01:28:24find the Batman of wines I find that I
- 01:28:27find that the very best C Fran uh wines
- 01:28:31are reflective of the kinds of vampire
- 01:28:34stories that I like to
- 01:28:36tell um complicated brooding dark
- 01:28:40morally
- 01:28:42questionable um morally questionable
- 01:28:45wine Inky Inky dark around the edges no
- 01:28:48no clear answers um
- 01:28:52the wine best served with Seattle by
- 01:28:54night though isn't my favorite wine by
- 01:28:56no means good Heavens Seattle by night
- 01:28:59is just a rolicking roller coaster
- 01:29:03descent into um Darkly humorous chaos
- 01:29:07right that's an entirely different vibe
- 01:29:10from from a cab Fran you are you know
- 01:29:12you're looking at some of the some of
- 01:29:14the Wilder Italian wines at that point
- 01:29:17um I'm going to
- 01:29:20say what would I see now I I'm I'm
- 01:29:23imagining Jasmine B's voice in my head
- 01:29:25and warning me not to get this
- 01:29:29wrong the
- 01:29:31re I have you met Jasmine you better not
- 01:29:34get it wrong I did I was
- 01:29:37star me too I'm Star Trek every time I
- 01:29:39sit down with Jasmine I'm like I am not
- 01:29:41worthy to be on this stage this is
- 01:29:43ridiculous this is a human being of
- 01:29:45extraordinary talent and intelligence
- 01:29:49um but for Seattle by I I recommend
- 01:29:52something a little bit lighter than a
- 01:29:54Cabernet Fran you've got to you've got
- 01:29:56to go ratchet up the the scale a little
- 01:29:58bit um I'm gonna go with um believe it
- 01:30:02or not I'm GNA go with a really honest a
- 01:30:07really honest Italian Kean and I know
- 01:30:10that I know that there's a lot of
- 01:30:12cliches about Kean but um there are a
- 01:30:15few wines more honest I a few Reds more
- 01:30:18honest than a Kean it does exactly what
- 01:30:21it says on the tin you know exactly what
- 01:30:23you're going to get going to get um it
- 01:30:27can be it can be humorous it can change
- 01:30:31mood on you at the drop of a hat
- 01:30:33depending on what you're what you're
- 01:30:34serving it with and it can in the same
- 01:30:38glass be incredibly poignant and
- 01:30:42um and dark and at the same time uh
- 01:30:46light and uplifting and above all uh
- 01:30:50Kean is a wine I would describe as a
- 01:30:54it's a wine of radical
- 01:30:56transparency does it's it's exactly what
- 01:31:00it says it is and so is Seattle by night
- 01:31:02you know exactly what you're going to
- 01:31:04get this is the story of a bunch of
- 01:31:06vampires who are hobnobbing well above
- 01:31:09their station and who have goals that
- 01:31:12are out of alignment with the night
- 01:31:15around them and who are thrust in a
- 01:31:17situation not of their own making and
- 01:31:20yet must make the best of it and I I
- 01:31:22definitely think that's a Kean kind of
- 01:31:24one and I want to conclude this
- 01:31:26conversation by saying that we are not
- 01:31:28sponsored by any distillation companies
- 01:31:29and we are not uh trying to convince
- 01:31:32anyone to drink unresponsible or drink
- 01:31:34in general uh please drink responsibly
- 01:31:37if you do so and thank you so much Jason
- 01:31:40for your Insight uh that was that was a
- 01:31:43great conversation I had so much
- 01:31:45fun I had a great time too thank you
- 01:31:47that went about 34 minutes longer than I
- 01:31:50thought I was going to and I don't think
- 01:31:51we got to half the questions so I think
- 01:31:54we're going to have to do this again
- 01:31:57yeah pardon me uh relatively soon maybe
- 01:32:00with some with some sub conversations
- 01:32:02but Marty um thank you for arranging
- 01:32:04this thank you um to the um world of
- 01:32:07Darkness Discord team huie Aron bun Leo
- 01:32:11and um everyone uh who has helped uh
- 01:32:14keep this moving uh while building the
- 01:32:18plane while we are flying it um and let
- 01:32:22me conclude by saying um it's a great
- 01:32:25joy and honor to be here with the family
- 01:32:28the family could be anywhere they could
- 01:32:29be doing anything uh but they choose to
- 01:32:32spend their time with us and we're
- 01:32:36grateful thank you so much Jason we'll
- 01:32:38let you rest your voice right now and we
- 01:32:40will definitely do it again one
- 01:32:43day thanks everyone bye-bye have a great
