Timeline
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
Nan premye pati a, yo diskite sou ide biznis ki gen rapò ak kontwòl paran, ki ta ka vin pote lapè nan tèt paran yo ki soufri ak pwoblèm kontwòl ekran. Yo vize sou yon modèl ki bay sèvis antreten ki gen ladan konsèy pèsonalize ak tout resous ki nesesè pou jere ak limite kontni ki aksesib pou timoun yo.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
Ide a devlope sou enfliyans ki genyen sou teknoloji sou kontwòl ekran, ak pwopozisyon ki fèt pou kreye yon abònman ki ta ka enkli ofri sou pwodwi tankou kat kredi pou timoun yo. Yo chatting sou bezwen yo ki varye selon fanmi, ak posibilite pou mete yon modèl biznis ki gen yon fwa etabli ak resous kontinyèl.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
Yo fè yon paralèl ant ide yo ak siksè Dr Becky, ki te devlope yon biznis medya ki gen anpil kliyan pèmanan. Sa fè wè enpòtans pou bati yon baz fidèl ak kontni ki itil ak atiran pou paran ki ap chèche solisyon pou pwoblèm yo.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
Yo pwopoze yon ide ki vize sou edikasyon ak fòmasyon nan metye ki tradisyonèl la, ak yon modèl ki prale pou jwenn yon patenarya ak konpayi ki gen bezwen pou travayè ki fòme, ak yon sistèm ki tou fèmen yon patenarya sou revni ki netwaye.
- 00:30:00 - 00:38:14
Konvèsasyon an finalman abòde sou enpòtans pou enspire lè yo bati yon nouvo pwodwi, sitou nan lis ki vize redui pwodwi a nan yon sèl fonksyon ki fè byen. Yo kòmanse fè konparezon sou entropi ki genyen ant negatif nan yon pwodwi ak valè entènèt ak sou done ki ka sèvi nan aplike nan itilize.

- 00:00:00sorry good to have
- 00:00:02you you're a a fountain of startup
- 00:00:06ideas and I need I you got some you told
- 00:00:10me you have some ideas is that right a
- 00:00:12lot of ideas um where do you want to
- 00:00:14start let's see I think the ideas that I
- 00:00:17have
- 00:00:18are combination of things I would pay
- 00:00:20for and I know a lot of people would pay
- 00:00:22for things that I
- 00:00:25think basically reflect everything that
- 00:00:28I've learned about building Sublime so
- 00:00:31I'm just going like I could do like
- 00:00:32startup ideas on easy mode for you
- 00:00:34because I've done a lot of things on
- 00:00:35hard mode um and then I generally like
- 00:00:40my general sense of where startup ideas
- 00:00:43are today is like you have to be as
- 00:00:47close or as far as possible from AI so I
- 00:00:50think I've got a lot of ideas that are
- 00:00:51like in the heart of it and a lot of
- 00:00:53ideas that are overlooked because
- 00:00:54they're just like so far um from AI but
- 00:00:57we could start with the one thing that I
- 00:00:59was thinking about last night that I
- 00:01:00would pay for in a heartbeat okay let's
- 00:01:03start there okay so the gist of it
- 00:01:07[Music]
- 00:01:14is franchise for parental controls so
- 00:01:18hear me out so I've got three kids ages
- 00:01:21three seven and nine the two older ones
- 00:01:24have iPads have had iPads since
- 00:01:27Co companies like Apple make it so hard
- 00:01:31to control like I I think I have set up
- 00:01:35like Band YouTube shorts or you know all
- 00:01:37these things so many times and these
- 00:01:38kids continue to outsmart me I think of
- 00:01:41myself as pretty tech savvy but I can't
- 00:01:43figure this out like these interfaces
- 00:01:44are like an airplane cockpit of features
- 00:01:46they're really hard to figure out and I
- 00:01:49think that a couple things like one is
- 00:01:53like screen time is not good or bad it
- 00:01:55depends on what's on the screen but
- 00:01:57parents can't [ __ ] control what's on
- 00:01:58the screen so so I think people are
- 00:02:01willing to pay for somebody to come into
- 00:02:03my house like a physical person that
- 00:02:06asks me what my preferences are and like
- 00:02:08resets basically like our family screen
- 00:02:12Dynamic ideally the kids are there it's
- 00:02:13like hey here are the rules and like you
- 00:02:15cannot use YouTube shorts or this or
- 00:02:18that and it depends like some families
- 00:02:19will be different but I think the
- 00:02:20business is you essentially like have
- 00:02:25one person create a ton of educational
- 00:02:27content and then license a bunch of
- 00:02:28people to do stuff and I don't know I
- 00:02:31think parents have like very little like
- 00:02:36they're very price elastic when it comes
- 00:02:37to this stuff because you're basically
- 00:02:39paying for peace of mind and would you
- 00:02:41pay is it like a one-time fee or is
- 00:02:43there a subscription element to it I I
- 00:02:46think that I think there would be like a
- 00:02:48one-time setup fee but I think where the
- 00:02:50business could be interesting and
- 00:02:51recurring
- 00:02:53is there's like as kids get older
- 00:02:56there's things like you know they need
- 00:02:57like a green light is like a credit card
- 00:03:00or like Circle to track where they are
- 00:03:01things like that so you could become an
- 00:03:03affiliate these licensed people could
- 00:03:05become an affiliate and like recommend
- 00:03:06stuff or like hey you know like maybe
- 00:03:09your kid is like really into this thing
- 00:03:11so like like they should have this app
- 00:03:12so I think there could be some
- 00:03:14recurrence and definitely like affiliate
- 00:03:15Revenue but I think that the idea of
- 00:03:18like a reset like a family reset people
- 00:03:22would pay like $2,000 for I think if I
- 00:03:24was starting this idea I would call it
- 00:03:27doctorscreen time.com
- 00:03:31and I would actually start by building
- 00:03:33like the media business so basically
- 00:03:37start by creating content just all
- 00:03:38around screen time
- 00:03:40[Music]
- 00:03:42and you know your first goal is like how
- 00:03:44do I get to 100,000 followers of parents
- 00:03:48who uh are looking for to consume
- 00:03:51content to
- 00:03:52basically curb screen time or just make
- 00:03:56uh you know time well spent with respect
- 00:03:59screen totally like I don't know if you
- 00:04:02are familiar with Dr Becky a good inside
- 00:04:04she's built a huge business started off
- 00:04:06as a media business yeah can you can you
- 00:04:08like I don't think everyone knows about
- 00:04:10her so Dr Becky is just this like
- 00:04:13incredibly uh influential parent that
- 00:04:16built a media business and now has a an
- 00:04:20app that people pay I like a lot of
- 00:04:22money for and it has like I think tens
- 00:04:25of thousands of paying customers but it
- 00:04:27like you said it started off as a as a
- 00:04:28media business but I think there's not
- 00:04:30like she goes broad it's recurring isn't
- 00:04:32it it's recurring it's a subscription
- 00:04:33business it's recurring but I actually
- 00:04:36think like that's the typical like
- 00:04:38software business where it's like a
- 00:04:39media company and then you know you
- 00:04:41build like a Content app of content
- 00:04:43content to Commerce content to Commerce
- 00:04:46like Playbook but I genuinely think so I
- 00:04:49am a big fan of um I don't know if you
- 00:04:51know the Zumba Fitness business so the
- 00:04:53founder of Zumba actually I don't know
- 00:04:55anything about the business I just know
- 00:04:56Z the founder is one of my closest
- 00:04:58friends like build a business in my
- 00:04:59Miami the idea was born in a Shabbat
- 00:05:01dinner that I was part of um but I love
- 00:05:04the business because essentially what
- 00:05:05they did is like it's a very Capital
- 00:05:07light business they have I think
- 00:05:1015,000 Fitness instructors these days
- 00:05:12that pay a monthly fee to get music and
- 00:05:15like choreographies and to be a part of
- 00:05:18the brand and so I think that like
- 00:05:21there's like a physical presence to that
- 00:05:23that I think is like really cool
- 00:05:24relative to just like I I just can't
- 00:05:27like like see more Becky from good
- 00:05:29inside content anymore like I'm not
- 00:05:30going to pay for the app I already have
- 00:05:31enough um so I just feel like there's an
- 00:05:34opportunity to like to have like a
- 00:05:36business in a box type of thing where
- 00:05:38you like arm these like screen time
- 00:05:41polices or whatever uh doctors and just
- 00:05:44like I don't know like it's a it's a
- 00:05:46great like side hustle income totally
- 00:05:50quick break in the Pod to tell you a
- 00:05:51little bit about startup Empire so
- 00:05:54startup Empire is my private membership
- 00:05:58where it's a bunch of people
- 00:06:00like me like you who want to build out
- 00:06:03their startup ideas now they're looking
- 00:06:06for content to help accelerate that
- 00:06:08they're looking for potential
- 00:06:09co-founders they're looking for uh
- 00:06:11tutorials from people like me to come in
- 00:06:15and tell them how do you do email
- 00:06:16marketing how do you build an audience
- 00:06:18how do you go viral on Twitter all these
- 00:06:20different things that's exactly what
- 00:06:22startup Empire is and it's for people
- 00:06:25who want to start a startup but are
- 00:06:27looking for ideas or it's for people who
- 00:06:30have a startup but just they're not
- 00:06:32seeing the traction uh that they need so
- 00:06:35you can check out the link to Startup
- 00:06:37empire.co in the description so I
- 00:06:40actually think there's a huge Trend
- 00:06:42around business in a box companies so um
- 00:06:48we're sitting here in Miami all
- 00:06:51everything that everyone sees here like
- 00:06:54with the mics and the cameras and our
- 00:06:57whole setup that was actually there's a
- 00:07:00company that sent us all this stuff so
- 00:07:02you can rent all your podcasting stuff
- 00:07:06in a box they send you a box you pick it
- 00:07:08up at FedEx but what was missing in my
- 00:07:11opinion
- 00:07:13is um do we do we want to name drop the
- 00:07:17the name of the company lens rentals is
- 00:07:20the company it's like a podcast business
- 00:07:21in a box yeah but if I was running lens
- 00:07:25rentals I would have upsold for sending
- 00:07:30like a doc a podcast doctor to come and
- 00:07:35actually set up everything make sure all
- 00:07:38the levels are correct make sure the
- 00:07:40shot is the frame is there like that's
- 00:07:42what was what was missing and if I was
- 00:07:44lens rentals I wouldn't be called lens
- 00:07:46rentals I would be called podcas inab
- 00:07:49box.com which by the way the domain is
- 00:07:51available amazing yeah in fact we should
- 00:07:54probably just buy that
- 00:07:56domain I mean I think there like it's
- 00:07:59it's a it's so genius to abstract away
- 00:08:02the complexity of starting anything like
- 00:08:04bundle a bunch of things together narrow
- 00:08:07the choices and like just present them
- 00:08:09to you uh I have another actually
- 00:08:11business in a box idea that I I'm not
- 00:08:14the right person to do this
- 00:08:16but what like the question that I've
- 00:08:18been asking myself is what becomes
- 00:08:20scarce in an AI world and I think what
- 00:08:23becomes scarce is like people doing
- 00:08:24stuff with their hands like this we have
- 00:08:27a generation of people that grew up
- 00:08:28scrolling they and like the the tactile
- 00:08:31Joy of like making something physical I
- 00:08:33think is going to come
- 00:08:35back and there's a business in New York
- 00:08:38that I went to about a year ago it's
- 00:08:41called happy medium and essentially it's
- 00:08:44this like Art Cafe where basically like
- 00:08:47they it's a super cool brand they
- 00:08:48partner with Brands like glossier and
- 00:08:51like to do brand activations but
- 00:08:52essentially like they uh have like
- 00:08:56Pottery um you know like like
- 00:08:59uh figure drawing like painting all
- 00:09:02sorts of like crafty
- 00:09:04things their tagline is amazing I think
- 00:09:06it's something like be brave enough to
- 00:09:08be terrible so so it like tries to
- 00:09:11appeal to not like you to the amateurs
- 00:09:14really but the problem is is it's not
- 00:09:17scalable it's like it's a business that
- 00:09:19has real estate and they've they have
- 00:09:21one location I think they're Venture
- 00:09:22backed but I think that this I like you
- 00:09:26could do this like a business in a box
- 00:09:27where you essentially partner with with
- 00:09:29local artists Etsy sellers whatever arm
- 00:09:33them with the supplies the
- 00:09:35educational um stuff like even like I
- 00:09:38don't know you could probably like do it
- 00:09:39at like restaurants during off hours or
- 00:09:42like homes or whatever but like I think
- 00:09:44you could build an modern cool consumer
- 00:09:46brand around like people doing stuff
- 00:09:48with their hands if you look at the
- 00:09:50space there's like Michaels and like a
- 00:09:52like even just like Color Me mind is I
- 00:09:54think the like brick and mortar like
- 00:09:56they're all dated and boring and I just
- 00:09:59think that the status symbol in an AI AG
- 00:10:02is like you know it's just going to be
- 00:10:03like I disconnected from the information
- 00:10:05flow and I like did something with my
- 00:10:07hands 100% I also think that there's
- 00:10:10probably there's probably a business
- 00:10:13that you can create like a status
- 00:10:14business whereas like I've been off my
- 00:10:17phone for seven days and I get this
- 00:10:19badge and I can like you know there's Al
- 00:10:22there's something there also like
- 00:10:23offline is the new luxury and what do
- 00:10:25you do with that exactly yeah but I yeah
- 00:10:28I just really feel like and even like
- 00:10:31and like thinking about doing stuff with
- 00:10:33your hands like if you think about the
- 00:10:34Industrial Revolution what that did is
- 00:10:36like it automated a lot of physical
- 00:10:37labor but what AI is doing is it's
- 00:10:39automating a lot of White Collar jobs
- 00:10:42and so I think a lot of like trade jobs
- 00:10:45where there used to be a lot of stigma
- 00:10:47around like you don't want to do trade
- 00:10:48jobs it's not perceived as like a status
- 00:10:50job it's actually going to be the
- 00:10:51opposite like plumbers electricians like
- 00:10:53these people are making a lot more money
- 00:10:55and their jobs are a lot more safe than
- 00:10:58you know your average like Junior
- 00:11:00copywriter working at an agency in New
- 00:11:01York City totally so I just I I don't
- 00:11:04know I feel like we're just on the cusp
- 00:11:05of this like you know like the the the
- 00:11:08status like what is like has status is
- 00:11:10changing and like doing things with your
- 00:11:13hands like doing things away from your
- 00:11:14computer that has status and and so I
- 00:11:17like I think the craft thing is like a
- 00:11:18Leisure thing but I really do
- 00:11:21think and I see that like at certainly
- 00:11:23in Miami people like it's so hard to
- 00:11:26find like Tradesmen it's so expensive
- 00:11:28construction cost are through the roof
- 00:11:30and I always think about uh whether you
- 00:11:32could apply the business model of Lambda
- 00:11:35school if you like remember where it's
- 00:11:38like zero tuition you know like train
- 00:11:40these train these people but then you
- 00:11:42make a cut of like their revenue once
- 00:11:45you find them a job like what have you
- 00:11:47build like a modern brand around like
- 00:11:48Tradesmen but like I don't know just
- 00:11:50like Elevate the status of it because
- 00:11:51there's like real money in these jobs
- 00:11:53and there's a huge shortage most of the
- 00:11:55people in these trade stops are actually
- 00:11:56retiring in a couple years it's a huge
- 00:11:58problem actually so basically is the
- 00:11:59idea lamb the school for trades people I
- 00:12:02think so I think there's like an
- 00:12:03opportunity to be like choose a vertical
- 00:12:05whether it's like painting Landscaping
- 00:12:06Plumbing electricians like I don't know
- 00:12:08like woodworking whatever train these
- 00:12:11people find them jobs and then get a cut
- 00:12:13of like their income um but I think like
- 00:12:16the like you have to build a compelling
- 00:12:18brand that elevates the status of these
- 00:12:20things I think if I was going to do that
- 00:12:22idea which by the way is a big idea in a
- 00:12:25good way uh I think that Not only would
- 00:12:30I want to train these trades people but
- 00:12:33I'd want to arm them with here's how to
- 00:12:36get
- 00:12:37customers so basically what I would do
- 00:12:40would be like okay you're now trained to
- 00:12:41be a uh you
- 00:12:45know call it an
- 00:12:47electrician and I'm going to I'm going
- 00:12:50to do all the Facebook ads for you I'm
- 00:12:52going to create the website for you and
- 00:12:54then you take a cut for that and then
- 00:12:58you take a cut for the training that's
- 00:13:01where I think a lot of the yeah I mean
- 00:13:03these businesses operate like fax
- 00:13:05machines like 1985 type stuff so I think
- 00:13:08there's a lot of vertical SAS but like
- 00:13:09you said it's a huge idea if I was just
- 00:13:11getting started I would literally find
- 00:13:13somebody to license these people find
- 00:13:15like companies that are actually hiring
- 00:13:17instead of like them doing this like
- 00:13:19freelance to start um but it's a Hu I
- 00:13:21think it's a huge idea and I also think
- 00:13:23it's like one that like tech people
- 00:13:25don't touch this stuff but I think a lot
- 00:13:27of the ideas that I have that are more
- 00:13:29like in the heart of tech like they're
- 00:13:31just going to be less valuable when an
- 00:13:33AI can do that yeah I mean I honestly
- 00:13:35think that's the biggest question I'm
- 00:13:37wrestling with is just in an if AGI
- 00:13:42happens which you have to assume it
- 00:13:45will uh what becomes a commodity and
- 00:13:48what becomes
- 00:13:50scarce yeah somebody said posted on
- 00:13:52Twitter lesson like what happens like
- 00:13:54what you know how do people choose one
- 00:13:56soft or the other in a world where like
- 00:13:58AI can do absolutely everything and I
- 00:14:00don't know my my take on it is my answer
- 00:14:03was like founder worldview I genuinely
- 00:14:06think that the motivation and the vision
- 00:14:10and the intention behind something is
- 00:14:11something you can't fake it's it's a
- 00:14:14little bit woo woo it's a little bit
- 00:14:15wishy-washy but I think that's how I
- 00:14:17think that's how people make decisions
- 00:14:19um it matters like why are you building
- 00:14:21this like I don't think people the
- 00:14:23humans are not like rational like we
- 00:14:25were talking econ 11 you know like
- 00:14:27people make decisions based on emotions
- 00:14:29and I don't know I I think it's like far
- 00:14:34less utilitarian than
- 00:14:37people's what other ideas you got okay
- 00:14:41so here's here's something I've learned
- 00:14:43building Sublime is I think so I think
- 00:14:45there's two types of Founders broadly
- 00:14:47speaking I think there's Founders that
- 00:14:50operate less like business Executives
- 00:14:52and more like you artists they have a
- 00:14:54creative vision and they're manifesting
- 00:14:56it and they're not really solving a
- 00:14:58problem they're just manifesting a
- 00:15:00creative vision and the kind of like
- 00:15:05counter point to that is like Founders
- 00:15:08that are iterating and validating and
- 00:15:09like you know here's a hypothesis and
- 00:15:11I'm going to tweak it and like
- 00:15:12iteratively get to product Market fit
- 00:15:15and I definitely think I'm the former
- 00:15:17like Sublime is the former it's you know
- 00:15:19in some ways like I I had this idea
- 00:15:22fully formed in my head about like
- 00:15:24building a Sublime internet and I had to
- 00:15:26kind of work backwards to reverse
- 00:15:27engineer that idea because the reality
- 00:15:29is that most people don't care about
- 00:15:31their mission they care about what can
- 00:15:32you do for them today and so I'm I've
- 00:15:35sort of been in that process of like how
- 00:15:36do you take that big vision and like pce
- 00:15:38meal it into specific value props but I
- 00:15:41say that
- 00:15:42because I think that you know like
- 00:15:46Sublime for me is like the missionary
- 00:15:47thing it's like the multi-decade project
- 00:15:50it's going to like take me decades but
- 00:15:52it's like the mo is so profound uh but I
- 00:15:55think there's a huge opportunity to do
- 00:15:57the opposite of that which is do one
- 00:15:59thing do it well and and I have two
- 00:16:02ideas one of which I'm building the
- 00:16:03other of which I would build uh if
- 00:16:05somebody in this podcast wants to help
- 00:16:08um but essentially or actually maybe let
- 00:16:11me frame it with an anecdote that I
- 00:16:12think is
- 00:16:14fantastic so AKO Marita was the designer
- 00:16:17for the Sony
- 00:16:19Walkman and he had an opportunity when
- 00:16:22he was designing the Walkman to add a
- 00:16:25record button on the Walkman for 50
- 00:16:27cents all it would do is ADD 50 cents to
- 00:16:30the cost of making the thing but he
- 00:16:32decided against it he said adding a
- 00:16:34record button would basically like
- 00:16:37generate ambiguity about what this is
- 00:16:39for this is a device to just play music
- 00:16:42it does nothing else and I you know I
- 00:16:46just think that that's such a profound
- 00:16:47lesson for Founders that want to I don't
- 00:16:50know like I'm going to build you an AI
- 00:16:51co-founder like no like build an AI that
- 00:16:54will do one specific thing so so I have
- 00:16:56two ideas that are inspired by that that
- 00:16:59are just very simple do one thing and do
- 00:17:00it right the first I have a prototype of
- 00:17:04this but essentially it's capture
- 00:17:08insights from podcasts with a screenshot
- 00:17:11so let me let me tell you
- 00:17:13more so a lot of ideas are stuck in
- 00:17:17audio formats that are just hard to
- 00:17:20capture tell me about it right U
- 00:17:23preaching to the Right audience here um
- 00:17:26so how do people get around this today a
- 00:17:28couple things they do so one is like
- 00:17:30they download other apps where with like
- 00:17:32convoluted uis where you can like
- 00:17:33highlight from podcast but the vast
- 00:17:35majority of people are still doing
- 00:17:37Spotify Apple podcast so that's just
- 00:17:39like a tiny fraction of an audience like
- 00:17:41I I think that's a bad idea like to
- 00:17:42build an entire podcast player like no
- 00:17:45make sure that you operate within the
- 00:17:47big players the other thing people do is
- 00:17:49like after you know if I'm listening to
- 00:17:51a podcast on the car on the way here if
- 00:17:52I liked some insight from an episode
- 00:17:54that you did I'll go home I'll use one
- 00:17:57of these like apps to generate the train
- 00:17:58transcript I'll highlight it copy paste
- 00:18:00it into my notes whatever too much work
- 00:18:03okay so here's what we realized a lot of
- 00:18:06people take screenshots of Spotify for
- 00:18:09like to just look at the timestamp they
- 00:18:11never go back to look at it's a lot of e
- 00:18:14of work to say like okay minute 8:36
- 00:18:17like so what we did with AI is like you
- 00:18:21take a screenshot from Spotify or apple
- 00:18:23podcasts we use OCR optical character
- 00:18:27recognition to figure out what's the
- 00:18:28name of the podcast what's the episode
- 00:18:30what's the timestamp then we go and look
- 00:18:32at like do like speech to text to figure
- 00:18:35out like all right what was the text
- 00:18:37around that time and the cool thing is
- 00:18:39like you actually don't have to set a
- 00:18:41beginning and end like we we understand
- 00:18:43the context based on this conversation
- 00:18:45and the screenshot like more or less
- 00:18:47they were talking about like ACO
- 00:18:49Marita's story of simplicity so here's
- 00:18:51the transcript and here's the audio clip
- 00:18:54and you basically have this library of
- 00:18:56like insights from podcasts so that the
- 00:18:58time you spend like listening to podcast
- 00:19:01is not wasted do you think I I I
- 00:19:05absolutely love it so I believe that
- 00:19:08screenshots are the new bookmarks so um
- 00:19:12and a lot of people I know to screenshot
- 00:19:14this this podcast and
- 00:19:17they they'll send me a DM and they'll be
- 00:19:19like hey at minute 2 minute you know 35
- 00:19:22you said this um it also kind of reminds
- 00:19:26me of how I use Twitter bookmarks so I'm
- 00:19:29a bookmark person but I never go back to
- 00:19:32the bookmarks um and it's too bad cuz uh
- 00:19:37the reality is the interface on X is not
- 00:19:39conducive to
- 00:19:41remembering and capturing insights so if
- 00:19:46I'm you by the way this is exactly what
- 00:19:49I'm building because based on what I
- 00:19:51know about Sublime and like the mission
- 00:19:55um
- 00:19:56around capturing insights and get you
- 00:19:59know becoming more creative and stuff
- 00:20:00like
- 00:20:02that uh it it it feels like if I were
- 00:20:06you I'd create a bunch of micro apps
- 00:20:08that do one thing really well and then
- 00:20:09become top of funnel exactly so that's
- 00:20:11exactly well and that's why I led with a
- 00:20:13story of Simplicity because we could
- 00:20:14have built this within Sublime but it's
- 00:20:17like you said like people's mental model
- 00:20:19when they use Twitter is like scrolling
- 00:20:21for the ephemeral it's not archival so I
- 00:20:24I just think people have a mental model
- 00:20:27of how they engage with products and you
- 00:20:29have to do just one thing and do it well
- 00:20:31yeah so this is we're what do you think
- 00:20:32of the name podcast magic podcast magic
- 00:20:35you have a better name I mean I'm a name
- 00:20:37guy you
- 00:20:38know
- 00:20:40um I I don't have one off the top of my
- 00:20:42head that's better than doctor
- 00:20:46podcast you and doctors it's a doctor
- 00:20:49type of morning um
- 00:20:54but why I don't love it is
- 00:20:59I feel like the trend around the
- 00:21:01Sparkles for AI and like the magic of AI
- 00:21:05will lose it's starting to lose like
- 00:21:08it's its magic so to speak so I just
- 00:21:14wonder
- 00:21:16um I wonder like you know what makes
- 00:21:19Google such a good SE uh search engine
- 00:21:22is it's a verb yeah so I wonder like
- 00:21:23what's the verb yeah for yeah for doing
- 00:21:27you know a screenshot of a podcast right
- 00:21:29so like is it a pod shot like maybe it's
- 00:21:33pod shot and it's like oh I just did a
- 00:21:34pod shot and sent it to you that's not
- 00:21:36bad actually P shot there we go
- 00:21:39we um so yeah so I guess the thing um
- 00:21:44for that idea I think it's starting
- 00:21:47small like people are going to say like
- 00:21:48screenshots are the future so do
- 00:21:49screenshots of this or that but it has
- 00:21:51to be strictly limited to podcasts I
- 00:21:53think for it to work yes cuz that way I
- 00:21:56think the advantage of doing something
- 00:21:58so specific is distribution you like
- 00:22:01there is no better place to distribute
- 00:22:02this in podcasts whereas if you're doing
- 00:22:05like you know screenshots of a million
- 00:22:07things it's less relevant to a
- 00:22:10podcast so you're talking about an
- 00:22:12Insight that I want to double down on
- 00:22:14which is or double click into which is
- 00:22:17kind of the future of building startups
- 00:22:20is not by building a startup it's by
- 00:22:22building a micro
- 00:22:23startup so the old way of building a
- 00:22:26startup was
- 00:22:30you had this big idea and you went and
- 00:22:31go built this big idea and you iterated
- 00:22:33your way to product Market fit but I
- 00:22:37actually think now especially with AI
- 00:22:40and how easy it is to
- 00:22:42build it makes sense to be like okay I
- 00:22:45want you know here's my big Vision
- 00:22:47here's what my startup could look like
- 00:22:48in 5 10 years this is like draw out but
- 00:22:52then being like okay how do I unbundle
- 00:22:54my startup so you go through an
- 00:22:56unbundling process and then you write
- 00:22:59out what are the 5 to 10 Micro startups
- 00:23:03yes and then from that you prioritize
- 00:23:06around which ones do I think have the
- 00:23:08highest likelihoods of going viral or
- 00:23:10spreading yes and then from that you
- 00:23:13prioritize what are the easiest way you
- 00:23:16know this it yeah what's
- 00:23:19what's what's the effort estimate for
- 00:23:22for this startup versus that startup and
- 00:23:24then you do something with low effort
- 00:23:26estimate yes and then your job like
- 00:23:29as a startup Builder is is You're
- 00:23:31Building multiple of these basically yes
- 00:23:34well what what what I love about what
- 00:23:35you're saying is that I I think the key
- 00:23:38is like to have that 10-year Vision in
- 00:23:41your head and work backwards because the
- 00:23:44real I think a lot of Founders fall in
- 00:23:45love with I'm going to build an Empire a
- 00:23:47One-Stop shop uh you know a collection
- 00:23:49of products but users don't think that
- 00:23:51way they think about like a job to be
- 00:23:54done but for Sublime specifically so I
- 00:23:57remember if you you remember the Rome
- 00:23:59craze from like the no taking days I
- 00:24:02remember the founder saying something
- 00:24:04like we're not competing with Evernote
- 00:24:05we're competing with Google but as
- 00:24:07somebody who's been building and living
- 00:24:09and breathing this space it's impossible
- 00:24:12like from a product architecture
- 00:24:14perspective to become that if you don't
- 00:24:16really have that Foundation from day
- 00:24:17Zero like Sublime from Day Zero we were
- 00:24:20so conscious about every decision we
- 00:24:23made because we felt that even though we
- 00:24:25don't pitch it as this like over time
- 00:24:28because of the multiplayer Foundation
- 00:24:30this becomes like the world's best
- 00:24:32curated inspiration engine for ideas but
- 00:24:35you had to bake that into the foundation
- 00:24:36even though if I start like pitching
- 00:24:38Sublime as like an inspiration engine
- 00:24:40and a personal it just becomes too
- 00:24:42overwhelming also people don't look for
- 00:24:45an inspiration engine people don't look
- 00:24:46for an inspiration engine it's like not
- 00:24:47that's a mistake a lot of Founders make
- 00:24:49is they they write out their 10-year
- 00:24:51vision and it's like I'm creating the
- 00:24:53inspiration engine and then go look at
- 00:24:56Google Trends data like no one is
- 00:24:58right so right so but but I think it's
- 00:25:01still useful to know how this like
- 00:25:03ecosystem will work but I think to your
- 00:25:06point I think the most effective thing a
- 00:25:08Founder can do I mean there's the meme
- 00:25:10of like first Founders think about
- 00:25:11products second Founders think about
- 00:25:12distribution I think that's spot on I
- 00:25:15think you need to think about like what
- 00:25:16is the headline that will make this
- 00:25:18thing go viral and I think the headline
- 00:25:21for a pod shot app is like a lot clearer
- 00:25:24and better than like a you know headline
- 00:25:26for like a Missi driven thing that will
- 00:25:29maybe appeal to VCS but not really to a
- 00:25:31consumer that's like scrolling um Tik
- 00:25:33Tok or whatever so I I think that
- 00:25:37Founders need to like like like think of
- 00:25:41the headline first what is that what is
- 00:25:44like and then work backwards you know if
- 00:25:46you have this big Vision okay how do you
- 00:25:47piece meal that into a headline for a
- 00:25:49micr product that could go viral and
- 00:25:51then build that 100% And then you and
- 00:25:54the beauty is you can test that you can
- 00:25:56test those headlines like create some
- 00:25:58ads see you know see what resonates with
- 00:26:01people before you go and you know raise
- 00:26:04millions of dollars and or or spend your
- 00:26:07own money and time to go build a big
- 00:26:09software product yeah I mean I I the the
- 00:26:11whole like test things thing with that
- 00:26:13it's like I don't really know how to do
- 00:26:14that yeah I feel like I don't know I
- 00:26:17feel like everything I want to do needs
- 00:26:19to have a high bar for Polish so I don't
- 00:26:21really know I don't really know how that
- 00:26:23could be um
- 00:26:26effective at telling you if it's going
- 00:26:27to work or not if if it's not done to
- 00:26:29the degree of
- 00:26:31Polish um that like ultimately the thing
- 00:26:34would have so I I struggle with the with
- 00:26:36the like you know like test with an ad
- 00:26:39so how to test with ads I would say is
- 00:26:41you still need to build your micro app
- 00:26:43or or startup but what you can test is
- 00:26:46the positioning so you know you can do a
- 00:26:51uh you can do an ad where it's like you
- 00:26:53know find your creativity or you can do
- 00:26:56an ad that's like screenshot your
- 00:27:00uh or or get insights from podcasts and
- 00:27:03you can see like what resonates and then
- 00:27:05from that you could do conversion rate
- 00:27:09optimization on your main product yeah
- 00:27:12that that's you know the The Lean
- 00:27:15Startup old school book at this point
- 00:27:17but like The Lean Startup by Eric GES
- 00:27:19talks about um how you don't need to
- 00:27:23actually build anything you can put a
- 00:27:24landing page you can send traffic to it
- 00:27:27and based on that you know you can
- 00:27:29figure out what to build um I don't
- 00:27:31think that works anymore I I think that
- 00:27:33it's like why would you do that in an AI
- 00:27:35world where building isn't the hard part
- 00:27:37yeah you know I I think that worked
- 00:27:40maybe a long time ago when like idea to
- 00:27:43like production took like 18 months yeah
- 00:27:46but if it takes 18 days it's kind of I
- 00:27:49also think that work should like the bar
- 00:27:51for consumers is so high these days
- 00:27:53we've been spoiled with Incredible
- 00:27:56software like every time I use Uber and
- 00:27:58C like this is like we are just so
- 00:28:00spoiled that the bar for Polish like
- 00:28:02nobody wants a minimum viable product
- 00:28:05people want something awesome people
- 00:28:06want something that moves them that like
- 00:28:08is emotionally compelling and I think
- 00:28:10you can do that in cheap ways but I
- 00:28:13think you need a fantastic copy I think
- 00:28:15you need like somebody that like
- 00:28:18understands like humans and emotion and
- 00:28:22I just don't think that it's like a
- 00:28:24optimization thing I think it's like an
- 00:28:26emotion thing
- 00:28:28it's it's tough I think you know some
- 00:28:30people like you talked about you know
- 00:28:32art versus science basically earlier
- 00:28:35some people get to the positioning and
- 00:28:39the product via taking out ads putting
- 00:28:42their money where their mouth is and
- 00:28:44iterating their way to success and some
- 00:28:46people are and that's like science yeah
- 00:28:50and some people are more like I need to
- 00:28:54go
- 00:28:56and like go a journey to like go and
- 00:28:59figure this out and it's more of this
- 00:29:01like intuition s question so yeah well
- 00:29:04so my my resolution for this year is
- 00:29:06like take less feedback like I just want
- 00:29:10like every time I have a dilemma for
- 00:29:12like a product question I ask 10 people
- 00:29:15I get 10 different answers it takes me
- 00:29:17further from myself I I think there's
- 00:29:20like you said there's two you could
- 00:29:21succeed both ways you have to know who
- 00:29:22you are exactly and I know that I just
- 00:29:25need to like dial up on my intuition and
- 00:29:28like just like tunee out the noise and I
- 00:29:32I think especially with Sublime where I
- 00:29:33am building the product I wish I had the
- 00:29:36more I hear other people's opinions the
- 00:29:38further I get from like what I actually
- 00:29:40want so I think last year I overdosed on
- 00:29:43feedback I did over a thousand
- 00:29:44onboarding calls and this year I want
- 00:29:46the opposite I just I wan
- 00:29:49to I want to create things that have
- 00:29:51more Edge like the language that might
- 00:29:54you know like it might polarize some
- 00:29:55people but it's okay you know I just
- 00:29:57think that there's no room today for
- 00:30:00like the Bland you know you just have to
- 00:30:03like stand for something and you can't
- 00:30:05do that like if you take feedback from
- 00:30:07everybody you're reverting to the mean h
- 00:30:08how many how many customer feedback
- 00:30:10calls do you think you'll take this year
- 00:30:12so we actually like promised the first a
- 00:30:15th paying customers that they'd have a
- 00:30:16one-on-one onboarding call so we got our
- 00:30:18first thousand customers so in theory I
- 00:30:20owe no more onboarding calls I still I
- 00:30:24mean I still like to talk to people you
- 00:30:25know I think that like being a Founder
- 00:30:27is like
- 00:30:28this very like schizophrenic experience
- 00:30:30where you're going from like abstract
- 00:30:32figma screens to like you know like it's
- 00:30:36so I think talking to
- 00:30:37people it reminds you that there are
- 00:30:40like people on the other side of things
- 00:30:41that are like benefiting from what you
- 00:30:42do so I think it's important um but I I
- 00:30:46don't know I just think that what what I
- 00:30:47want this year is like more time to go
- 00:30:51deep and like just come up on the other
- 00:30:53side with stuff that's weirder you know
- 00:30:55I want to hear I want to hear your other
- 00:30:56idea that you have but before we do that
- 00:31:00I want to tell you a quick story of
- 00:31:03something that happened to me so
- 00:31:06um
- 00:31:08I saw that a really well-known founder
- 00:31:13with a many multi-billion dollar exit
- 00:31:15and a mainstream technology product F
- 00:31:18started following me on X and I reached
- 00:31:20out and I said and he started a new
- 00:31:22startup recently and I reached out and
- 00:31:24I'm like hey I like what your new
- 00:31:26startup is doing by the way you
- 00:31:28know uh I'm very excited about it and he
- 00:31:31was like oh uh lay checkout should use
- 00:31:35our
- 00:31:36software and I was like okay and he's
- 00:31:39like let me connect you with my team and
- 00:31:42then I see on
- 00:31:44the you know okay so we schedule a time
- 00:31:47and I see on the calendar invite that
- 00:31:49the founder is on the call it's
- 00:31:52literally like a sales call and he's
- 00:31:55coming to the call and I was so shocked
- 00:31:58because
- 00:31:59like I couldn't believe that this
- 00:32:01billionaire was taking sales calls with
- 00:32:04essentially like random people from the
- 00:32:06internet and that inspired me to for
- 00:32:112025 to take more more sales calls more
- 00:32:15customer Journey so it it the the reason
- 00:32:18I bring that up
- 00:32:19is every
- 00:32:22founder depending on where they are in
- 00:32:24their cycle they may be like I need more
- 00:32:26feedback or less feedback and it's
- 00:32:27important to know where you are totally
- 00:32:29it's interesting I mean I I I feel like
- 00:32:31one of my kind of like mantras in life
- 00:32:35is like both are true you know like I
- 00:32:38think people like don't Embrace Nuance
- 00:32:40yeah it's like you either believe in
- 00:32:41feedback or you don't and it's like no
- 00:32:43it's pretty Nuance like I took I spent
- 00:32:44all of last year getting feedback now I
- 00:32:46need to like go deep and like I don't
- 00:32:49want to stay at the surface of calls I
- 00:32:50need to go deep I need to actually think
- 00:32:52about what all of these calls mean and
- 00:32:54like how do you I combine that those
- 00:32:55calls with like my intuition so I don't
- 00:32:58think it's like people that like my
- 00:32:59resolution is to take less feedback
- 00:33:00doesn't mean I don't believe in feedback
- 00:33:02it just is about where where am I in you
- 00:33:05have one last idea for us I have one
- 00:33:06last idea so again the theme is like do
- 00:33:10one thing and do it
- 00:33:11well so the I the the broad idea is take
- 00:33:17an article a link a presentation a long
- 00:33:20piece of text anything and convert it
- 00:33:23into a meme so I so I my flavor of
- 00:33:28content on the Internet is substack like
- 00:33:30that is where I naturally Thrive it's
- 00:33:32long form written content I've you know
- 00:33:35I have like 30,000 readers on substack
- 00:33:38but again it's like people that are like
- 00:33:40super engaged with long form and it's
- 00:33:42great but it's like harder to grow you
- 00:33:44know how many people are going to devote
- 00:33:4520 minutes a week to reading what I
- 00:33:47say memes are this like unit of like
- 00:33:51cultural transmission that in a Time
- 00:33:53crunched World say so much and so little
- 00:33:56and think that people that are creating
- 00:34:00like presentations long form videos like
- 00:34:04they would die to have like whatever
- 00:34:06they're trying to say be conveyed into
- 00:34:09like a the format of a meme um like I
- 00:34:12just genuinely think that no idea will
- 00:34:14become mainstream if it's not like
- 00:34:16captured in a meme and so I think the
- 00:34:20idea is like it's yeah it's a GPT rapper
- 00:34:24of sorts but you have to train it on a
- 00:34:27model of like a lot of memes culturally
- 00:34:30relevant memes and the user experience
- 00:34:32like the value proposition is like be
- 00:34:33funny you know like how do you
- 00:34:36communicate your idea in a way that's
- 00:34:37like funny in like short form right so
- 00:34:40anyone that's creating long form content
- 00:34:42like um like would love to have a meme
- 00:34:45and I've tried this on Claude I've tried
- 00:34:47this on chbt but it's it's pretty
- 00:34:49generic so I think if you train it on
- 00:34:51like this curated library of um of like
- 00:34:55culturally relevant memes and it has a
- 00:34:57bias for the present which um Chachi PT
- 00:34:59and CLA don't have I think there's just
- 00:35:02like a a product UI experience it's just
- 00:35:04like do one thing do it well past a link
- 00:35:06type text upload file whatever we ingest
- 00:35:09it generate embeddings for the thing
- 00:35:10understand it and then like you know I
- 00:35:13hear a lot of ideas and this might be
- 00:35:17one of my favorite ideas I've heard in a
- 00:35:20long time I'm serious this is let's do
- 00:35:22it this is
- 00:35:24like the Insight is correct I think
- 00:35:28uh there's so much there's so much
- 00:35:31Insight trapped into long form that
- 00:35:33could be put into short form and how
- 00:35:37that's being done today is that people
- 00:35:39are taking long form video and turning
- 00:35:41into short form Clips but they're not
- 00:35:43taking long long form text and turning
- 00:35:46into memes I think that there's a Nuance
- 00:35:50to memes like certain memes resonate
- 00:35:52with certain communities and um
- 00:35:58so there you know you don't want you
- 00:35:59don't you don't want to mess up the meme
- 00:36:01right and you want to like you want to
- 00:36:03make sure that you're getting uh the
- 00:36:07most like you don't want to post a meme
- 00:36:10when the meme is done like that format
- 00:36:13there's a cultural like relevance that
- 00:36:14you have to stay like in tune with ex so
- 00:36:16that's that's going to be that's going
- 00:36:17to take iteration to to get to like
- 00:36:19prime time but if if if you're able to
- 00:36:22create this if someone ends up building
- 00:36:24this this is like a you know a 10
- 00:36:27million a year plus SAS business well
- 00:36:30it's it's interesting if you think about
- 00:36:32an interesting comp is uh Google's
- 00:36:35notebook LM where there was it was a
- 00:36:37pretty broad product where you could
- 00:36:38converse with your knowledge in some way
- 00:36:40but what actually made it go viral this
- 00:36:42tool was the ability to convert anything
- 00:36:44it could be like text or presentation
- 00:36:46like any sort of document into a podcast
- 00:36:49and so I just think that this idea of
- 00:36:51like convert like take X like X to me
- 00:36:54you know and like the key is like you
- 00:36:55can adjust all this stuff with like you
- 00:36:57know a like how do you convert and
- 00:36:59understand the meaning of like the
- 00:37:01document um and then train it on the
- 00:37:03other side so it's got some curation but
- 00:37:04it's really a GPT rapper I love it
- 00:37:06product experience I love it sorry this
- 00:37:08has been fun you got to come back again
- 00:37:10yeah anytime you have to come back on
- 00:37:13again I'm a big like ideas person but um
- 00:37:18yeah I think right now I I like my
- 00:37:21playbook right now is like have this
- 00:37:23like
- 00:37:24multi-decade project like my life's work
- 00:37:27and then launch micro productss I think
- 00:37:28that's right it's it's it's making
- 00:37:31me it's making me rethink some stuff in
- 00:37:34in my own in my own stuff uh so thank
- 00:37:37you yeah thank you this is awesome and
- 00:37:40where where could people learn more
- 00:37:42about you and Sublime so I'm on Twitter
- 00:37:45um at s aut I'm on substack I write a
- 00:37:47Weekly Newsletter and then I'm on
- 00:37:49Sublime sublime. apppp I love it I
- 00:37:53should I should get on there yeah we
- 00:37:55today you're not we're not leaving this
