Aman attributes his success to a strong belief in himself and his ability to replicate others' successes. The Importance of practical knowledge over analysis is highlighted, emphasizing the importance of taking immediate action on ideas instead of overthinking them.

Continuing their analysis, the discussion focuses on Aman's immediate actions after realizing he could create content. - 00:00:00if you're interested in making money
- 00:00:01online enough money to potentially even
- 00:00:03quit your job then hopefully you'll get
- 00:00:05a lot of value from this video I've been
- 00:00:06able to make around 20K profit per month
- 00:00:09every month for the past 6 months which
- 00:00:11is almost double my full-time income as
- 00:00:13a software engineer and I quit my job
- 00:00:16about four to 5 months before I hit that
- 00:00:18profitability that is Aman a 23-year-old
- 00:00:20who watched one of my videos when he was
- 00:00:22a broke college student and he actually
- 00:00:23took action based on the advice I shared
- 00:00:25at the time and has now made enough
- 00:00:26money to quit his job and live and work
- 00:00:28from anywhere in the world on his own
- 00:00:30terms so at this point I can pretty
- 00:00:32confidently say I don't expect to have
- 00:00:34to go back to a 95 job if I don't want
- 00:00:36to now when Aman messaged me that he was
- 00:00:38visiting Hong Kong where I live I wanted
- 00:00:39to have him here on the channel to tell
- 00:00:41his story because there are so many
- 00:00:42people who watch YouTube videos just
- 00:00:44like this one but 99% of people never
- 00:00:46even take that first step they never
- 00:00:48even get started and of the 1% that take
- 00:00:50action and get started 99% of those
- 00:00:52people don't stay consistent long enough
- 00:00:54to actually see results Aman is that
- 00:00:56rare person who watched a video actually
- 00:00:58followed the advice and took action and
- 00:00:59did it consistently enough for a few
- 00:01:01years to finally see results yeah
- 00:01:02resistance is the problem here like I
- 00:01:04feel like a lot of people they see
- 00:01:05things and they immediately come up with
- 00:01:06all these reasons why it wouldn't work
- 00:01:07for them and so in this video we're
- 00:01:09going to break down exactly how he did
- 00:01:10it and what mindsets and strategies and
- 00:01:12tools helped him along the journey from
- 00:01:14broke college student to now making over
- 00:01:16$20,000 a month from his online business
- 00:01:18I can confidently say that one can make
- 00:01:2010K a month online from almost nothing
- 00:01:22so the way this video is going to work
- 00:01:23is that we are going to hear Aman's
- 00:01:24story and then I'm going to share my own
- 00:01:26perspectives and by the way if you are
- 00:01:28new to the channel and you're like who
- 00:01:29the hell is this guy hello my name is
- 00:01:30Ali I'm a doctor turned entrepreneur and
- 00:01:32author of The New York Times bestseller
- 00:01:34Feelgood productivity and these days my
- 00:01:36main gig is that I'm the co-founder of
- 00:01:38Sparkle Studios where we are building a
- 00:01:39suite of productivity apps to help you
- 00:01:41save more time and have more fun on
- 00:01:43route to achieving your goals and on the
- 00:01:45side I've been making YouTube videos on
- 00:01:46this channel since 2017 documenting my
- 00:01:48journey from medical student to doctor
- 00:01:50to entrepreneur and sharing the books
- 00:01:52ideas strategies and tools that can help
- 00:01:53us live more intentionally be more
- 00:01:55productive and build a life that we
- 00:01:56truly love anyway let's dive into Aman's
- 00:01:58story and what we can learn from it if
- 00:01:59we are trying to make enough money
- 00:02:01online to be able to one day quit our
- 00:02:02day jobs let's go back 4 years to May of
- 00:02:052020 around this time I was 19 years old
- 00:02:07I was at home with my family and I
- 00:02:09remember I was sitting in my living room
- 00:02:10when my brother who's about a year
- 00:02:12younger than me came to me and said hey
- 00:02:15there's this guy who's a doctor and a
- 00:02:17YouTuber and he posted about how much
- 00:02:18money he made and they put on the TV
- 00:02:19actually and my brother and me and my
- 00:02:21parents actually sat down and we watched
- 00:02:23that video and I don't know what about
- 00:02:26it was so incredible but something in
- 00:02:28that moment was just like holy
- 00:02:30this guy he's working as a doctor
- 00:02:32which is amazing but then also on the
- 00:02:34side he's making passive income from
- 00:02:37places like skillshare and YouTube and
- 00:02:39AdSense I remember all I wanted to do
- 00:02:41was either be like an engineer doctor
- 00:02:42lawyer or politician in my mind I never
- 00:02:44thought oh I could like start a business
- 00:02:45and actually you know be F Financial
- 00:02:48Freedom as a phrase has never even
- 00:02:49entered my vocabulary yet so yeah like
- 00:02:52watching that video was what actually
- 00:02:54made tangible that someone could
- 00:02:56actually do this so that was
- 00:02:57revolutionary to me and within that week
- 00:02:59I launched this skure class actually so
- 00:03:02it's pretty crazy so what's interesting
- 00:03:03about this is that 2.1 million people
- 00:03:05have seen that video that I made 4 years
- 00:03:07ago where I was documenting how much
- 00:03:08money I was making online but having now
- 00:03:10met a lot of people who've seen that
- 00:03:11video in real life and at conferences
- 00:03:12and talks that I've given the impression
- 00:03:14I get is most people will see a video
- 00:03:16like that and will immediately say not
- 00:03:18me not now maybe this thing worked for
- 00:03:20this person but the timing is not quite
- 00:03:22right for me there seem to be a lot of
- 00:03:23people who watch the stuff but don't
- 00:03:25take action on the stuff and so I asked
- 00:03:27Aman what was it about him and his
- 00:03:28brother that made them actually take
- 00:03:30action yeah resistance is the problem
- 00:03:32here like I feel like a lot of people
- 00:03:33they see things and they immediately
- 00:03:34come up with all these reasons why it
- 00:03:36wouldn't work for them maybe something
- 00:03:38that was different about me at that time
- 00:03:40or even now is that I feel like I just
- 00:03:42have an absurd level of self-belief
- 00:03:45there's basically anything that someone
- 00:03:47has done I feel like with given enough
- 00:03:51time effort and work I could replicate
- 00:03:53at least a little bit of that success I
- 00:03:55don't know if it's delusional but
- 00:03:57something I think there was that like
- 00:03:58self-belief there and I think also a lot
- 00:04:00of it was the fact that it was someone
- 00:04:01who on paper looked to be very similar
- 00:04:03to me so it wasn't like Barack Obama was
- 00:04:06saying launch your business right it was
- 00:04:08someone who like looked like me on paper
- 00:04:10with a very similar background and
- 00:04:11upbringing it wasn't like you were born
- 00:04:12to like a billionaire family or
- 00:04:14something like that I think this is a
- 00:04:15really really helpful mindset shift to
- 00:04:17have and that anyone watching if you're
- 00:04:18watching this right now you can also
- 00:04:20have that mindset shift the thing that
- 00:04:21Aman said which is that no matter what
- 00:04:23if there is something that someone has
- 00:04:24done given enough time and effort and
- 00:04:27work I could replicate at least a little
- 00:04:29bit of that success and there's a
- 00:04:30concept in Psychology called locus of
- 00:04:32control now there are some people with
- 00:04:34an internal locus of control and some
- 00:04:36people with an external locus of control
- 00:04:38and basically what locus of control
- 00:04:40means is that do you believe that the
- 00:04:42events in your life are controlled by
- 00:04:44you I.E an internal locus of control or
- 00:04:46do you believe that your success or the
- 00:04:47events in your life or whatever are
- 00:04:48controlled by other people external
- 00:04:50events the environment the government
- 00:04:52whatever that thing might be what we see
- 00:04:53from Aman's mindset is that it's very
- 00:04:55internal locus of control it's very much
- 00:04:56like hey someone else has achieved that
- 00:04:58thing if I just did loads of work but
- 00:05:00loads of time and effort and work into
- 00:05:01it I could probably get a little bit of
- 00:05:02the way there and so I might as well
- 00:05:04just give it a go it's really hard for
- 00:05:05me to not do things when I feel like I
- 00:05:07should do them or what I want to do them
- 00:05:10like for example we can talk about this
- 00:05:12a bit later I I ended up quitting my job
- 00:05:14within 24 hours of making that decision
- 00:05:16so within the same day of me realizing I
- 00:05:18could quit my full-time software
- 00:05:19engineering job I want to do this and
- 00:05:21iring out a plan I could not sit there
- 00:05:23and work for any longer I had to quit
- 00:05:25within the day I drafted my resignation
- 00:05:26letter and sent it the next day so I
- 00:05:28guess I just naturally had kind of like
- 00:05:31almost like an impulsive bias for Action
- 00:05:33where any anytime I would discover
- 00:05:35something think about doing something
- 00:05:37decide on doing something I would
- 00:05:38immediately start to take take action uh
- 00:05:40almost to a detriment with like other
- 00:05:42areas of my life where it was like I I
- 00:05:43tend to get distracted quite easily
- 00:05:45about like new opportunities and new
- 00:05:46Ventures all right so what we're seeing
- 00:05:47here is a strong bias to action there
- 00:05:50are a lot of people who have a bias to
- 00:05:52analysis a bias to planning you know
- 00:05:53what when I hear something I need to
- 00:05:55analyze it a lot I need to think about
- 00:05:57it I need to make plans but then there
- 00:05:58are some people that strongly bias
- 00:05:59towards action you know what I've heard
- 00:06:01something interesting let me just try it
- 00:06:02out and see what happens now a lot of
- 00:06:03people talk about the theory of biased
- 00:06:05to action and I've made tons of videos
- 00:06:06talking about why when you're starting a
- 00:06:08business or a YouTube channel or
- 00:06:09anything actually just getting started
- 00:06:11is the most important thing but I think
- 00:06:13it's useful to hear what this actually
- 00:06:14looked like for Aman at the time I
- 00:06:17immediately sat down with my brother and
- 00:06:18we sat on the couch and thought okay
- 00:06:20what can we make what do we know that we
- 00:06:21can teach so we came up with a few ideas
- 00:06:24the first one was standardized testing
- 00:06:25we both did very well on our
- 00:06:26standardized test classic right uh so we
- 00:06:29thought oh we can make a skillshare
- 00:06:30course about teaching the ACT which is
- 00:06:32the exam in the US that all the high
- 00:06:33schoolers take uh there was a couple
- 00:06:35other options one was like a music class
- 00:06:37or something we both had done music for
- 00:06:38piano and other instruments and stuff
- 00:06:40like that growing up and finally what we
- 00:06:43decided on doing was or actually what I
- 00:06:46decided on doing was making just like a
- 00:06:48random course on C which is a
- 00:06:50programming language I was working on at
- 00:06:52the time in my internship so the way I
- 00:06:54pulled this off was I didn't know
- 00:06:55anything about cameras microphones
- 00:06:57editing nothing so I just asked my
- 00:06:59friend was doing like videography stuff
- 00:07:00in high school can I borrow your
- 00:07:01microphone I want to make a course so he
- 00:07:03literally just lent it to me for 3 days
- 00:07:06I spent like 5 to 6 hours drafting up a
- 00:07:08random idea for this course like very
- 00:07:10basic programming Concepts filmed it
- 00:07:12within like an afternoon edited and
- 00:07:14launched it within like 3 days so I
- 00:07:16literally just like full full full story
- 00:07:19just literally just like came up with
- 00:07:21this idea edit it launched it within a
- 00:07:23couple days and just put it on the
- 00:07:24platform nice this is exactly what bias
- 00:07:26to action looks like and so the question
- 00:07:28I would profit to you if you're watching
- 00:07:30here in the video is to what extent do
- 00:07:32you have this bias to action in your own
- 00:07:33life see the thing that most people
- 00:07:34would say in this context is oh
- 00:07:36skillshare that's a cool idea I can make
- 00:07:38some courses on that but let me spend
- 00:07:40some time doing some research and then
- 00:07:41they'll forget about it for 3 weeks and
- 00:07:43then 3 weeks later they're like oh you
- 00:07:44know what I did a little bit of research
- 00:07:46but oh I don't have the right gear yet
- 00:07:47and they wouldn't think to just message
- 00:07:48a friend and borrow a microphone they'll
- 00:07:50think oh let me then research all the
- 00:07:52gear that I need to get oh I don't quite
- 00:07:53have enough money 8 months from now when
- 00:07:55Christmas rolls around and I'll get my
- 00:07:56Christmas bonus then maybe I'll be able
- 00:07:58to buy a microphone and a camera and
- 00:07:59plus you know I'll have to check with my
- 00:08:01work what if they find out that I have
- 00:08:02this tiny ass class on skill show that
- 00:08:04no one's ever going to see what if my
- 00:08:05work finds out like oh no I I'd have to
- 00:08:07write a letter to get permission and
- 00:08:09there's all of this analysis that goes
- 00:08:10into it analysis is the enemy of action
- 00:08:13especially when you are just getting
- 00:08:14started out oh by the way if you are
- 00:08:15enjoying this video then you might like
- 00:08:16to check out brilliant who are very
- 00:08:18kindly sponsoring this video if you
- 00:08:19haven't heard brilliant is a learning
- 00:08:21platform which I've been using for the
- 00:08:22last 5 years and I absolutely love it
- 00:08:24now one of my gripes with the education
- 00:08:25system in general is that we're taught
- 00:08:27to passively consume content but there's
- 00:08:29a bunch of research studies that show
- 00:08:30that this is a very ineffective way to
- 00:08:32learn and a far more effective way to
- 00:08:33learn is to learn by doing and that is
- 00:08:35where brilliant comes in they've got a
- 00:08:36bunch of interactive lessons in maths
- 00:08:38and data analysis programming and Ai and
- 00:08:41the interactive nature of the lessons
- 00:08:42means that you are doing rather than
- 00:08:43just passively consuming they've got a
- 00:08:45first principles approach to learning
- 00:08:46which helps you build understanding from
- 00:08:48the ground up and it's all crafted by an
- 00:08:49award-winning team of researchers
- 00:08:51teachers and professionals from cool
- 00:08:52places like MIT Caltech Microsoft Google
- 00:08:55and many more and one thing that I've
- 00:08:56been loving recently is their courses on
- 00:08:58AI they've got a series of courses on
- 00:09:00large language models and how to use AI
- 00:09:02for business and work and even though I
- 00:09:03feel like I've got a solid grasp of AI
- 00:09:05tools it was super helpful to get the
- 00:09:06zoomed out perspective from experts in
- 00:09:08the field so to try out everything
- 00:09:09brilliant has to offer completely free
- 00:09:11for a full 30 days head over to
- 00:09:13brilliant.org Al abdal or scan the QR
- 00:09:16code on screen or check out the link in
- 00:09:17the video description and all of those
- 00:09:19links will also give you 20% off the
- 00:09:21annual premium subscription so thank you
- 00:09:22brilliant for sponsoring this video and
- 00:09:24let's get back to it so have a pause of
- 00:09:25this video and have a think this guy
- 00:09:27made this course 4 years ago he made an
- 00:09:29online course he put it online how much
- 00:09:30money do you think it's made all right
- 00:09:32cool so youve got a number in your mind
- 00:09:33I think it's really helpful if you have
- 00:09:34a number in your mind because there is a
- 00:09:35point that I want to make a little bit
- 00:09:37further around so please do generate a
- 00:09:38number in your mind if you haven't yet
- 00:09:40and now let's hear from Aman and how
- 00:09:41much has that course made you in the
- 00:09:42last four years yeah that course has
- 00:09:45passively generated $1,500 which pretty
- 00:09:49sick for a few hours of work but yeah
- 00:09:51that was it's interesting because I
- 00:09:54don't know how to feel about that
- 00:09:55because part of me is like that's
- 00:09:57actually great like I was able to make
- 00:09:58money online but I guess if you compare
- 00:10:00that to how much I made through other
- 00:10:01areas it's really not that much now I
- 00:10:02suspect for most people watching this
- 00:10:04video your guess as to how much money he
- 00:10:06would have made would have been higher
- 00:10:07than $1,500 he might have thought he
- 00:10:09made like five figures you know a few
- 00:10:10tens of thousands of dollars or maybe
- 00:10:12even hundreds of thousands of dollars
- 00:10:13this is the impression that I get when I
- 00:10:14do talks where there are aspiring
- 00:10:16entrepreneurs in the audience people
- 00:10:17generally have a skewed perspective of
- 00:10:19how successful the first thing is going
- 00:10:21to be you never really see stuff online
- 00:10:23from people who tried launching an
- 00:10:24online course and only made $11,000 in 4
- 00:10:27years we only tend to hear the stories
- 00:10:29of of people who have already made it
- 00:10:30for example I've done a video talking
- 00:10:31about how I've made over $10 million
- 00:10:33from online courses Iman godi has made
- 00:10:35over $100 million from online courses
- 00:10:37these are the sorts of people you hear
- 00:10:38from you tend not to hear from the
- 00:10:40person who tried an online course
- 00:10:41initially and then like it kind of
- 00:10:42failed and they made like nothing and
- 00:10:44then the next thing failed and they made
- 00:10:45like $20 and the next thing failed and
- 00:10:47they made like $300 over a 5year period
- 00:10:49and the common mistake that people make
- 00:10:51here is thinking that the first thing
- 00:10:52you do has to be the last thing you do
- 00:10:55and let's hear from Aman about that what
- 00:10:56was great about that skillshare course
- 00:10:58was the fact that it was it was just me
- 00:11:00taking action to do something it's not I
- 00:11:02think there's a common mistake that a
- 00:11:03lot of people make thinking that the
- 00:11:05first thing you do has to be the last
- 00:11:07thing you do right it's like oh I don't
- 00:11:09know what my Niche is or I don't know
- 00:11:11how to I don't know what what idea to
- 00:11:13start my business I need to look for an
- 00:11:14idea I've heard this so much talking to
- 00:11:15friends and family about starting
- 00:11:16businesses they're like I need to look
- 00:11:17for a good idea once I have an idea then
- 00:11:19I'll start my business I'll leave my job
- 00:11:20I'll do that but the fact that my first
- 00:11:23forign to entrepreneurship was a really
- 00:11:26frankly shitty C course on on skillshare
- 00:11:28that only made 1.5k but that started
- 00:11:31into creating this entire world of
- 00:11:33Entrepreneurship 4 years later I don't
- 00:11:35know I think the first thing you do
- 00:11:36doesn't all does not have to be the last
- 00:11:38thing you do in fact the first thing can
- 00:11:39just be your first step into the journey
- 00:11:41and that's what creates the rest nice
- 00:11:43this is a really really really important
- 00:11:45point the first thing you do does not
- 00:11:46have to be the last thing you do and the
- 00:11:48way I think of it is that when you're
- 00:11:49starting a business your first three
- 00:11:51businesses are probably going to fail
- 00:11:53and that is a very good thing because
- 00:11:54it's sort of like riding a bike in order
- 00:11:56to learn how to ride a bike you don't
- 00:11:57just watch videos about how to ride a
- 00:11:58bike you you get on a bike and then you
- 00:12:00try and then you fall off a few times
- 00:12:01you get on you try again you fall off
- 00:12:02you get on you try again you fall off
- 00:12:04and eventually you learn how to ride a
- 00:12:05bike not by consuming knowledge or
- 00:12:06watching lectures and stuff about how to
- 00:12:08ride a bike but by actually getting on
- 00:12:09the bike and doing it and it's the same
- 00:12:11thing with business if you're trying to
- 00:12:12make money on the internet and you have
- 00:12:13not yet failed at at least a few
- 00:12:15business ideas you're probably worrying
- 00:12:17too much about analysis and getting it
- 00:12:18perfect rather than just taking action
- 00:12:20another another point on this is like
- 00:12:22you mentioned earlier millions of people
- 00:12:23watch these videos and you have 6
- 00:12:25million subscribers and I'm always
- 00:12:27shocked when I talk to someone who has
- 00:12:29hasn't started a business who's like oh
- 00:12:30I love Al abdall like that doesn't
- 00:12:31really computed by head how can you
- 00:12:33watch Al AB doll's Channel and not have
- 00:12:34already launched a YouTube channel or a
- 00:12:36business or do taken action on something
- 00:12:39right but I think there's a lot of
- 00:12:40people out there who have just like
- 00:12:42passively consumed this content but
- 00:12:43haven't actually done what these people
- 00:12:46say they're doing and I just don't get
- 00:12:48it right why would you watch it and not
- 00:12:50do what they're saying like if you want
- 00:12:53if you want that life so there's someone
- 00:12:55you want to be like is saying do X Y and
- 00:12:57Z how how could how is it possible to
- 00:12:59watch that and not even like take a
- 00:13:01first step towards that direction you
- 00:13:03know what I mean and I it's not even
- 00:13:04just D like for anybody else like Chris
- 00:13:06Williams and Alex heroi um even hza from
- 00:13:10time to time I will like listen to
- 00:13:11something they say and if something
- 00:13:13resonates with me I'm like yeah that
- 00:13:14makes sense just take action on it and
- 00:13:16even if it has to be like a very basic
- 00:13:17shitty version right not skillshare
- 00:13:19class I think skillshare took it down
- 00:13:21even like last year or something cuz it
- 00:13:22just I don't know didn't fit some new
- 00:13:23standard or whatever but that was just
- 00:13:26like I just got quick feedback I just
- 00:13:27tried something launch laed it made a
- 00:13:30couple tens of dollars a month passively
- 00:13:32through that and that just inspired me
- 00:13:33to keep the flywheel going and often it
- 00:13:35takes like 5 10 15 of these small random
- 00:13:38things before even one thing works out
- 00:13:40and as as you hear it took me 3 to four
- 00:13:42years of trying like this before
- 00:13:43one thing actually worked out and I was
- 00:13:44able to quit my job and make money
- 00:13:46online M again Aman has got it spot on
- 00:13:49it often takes like 5 10 15 of these
- 00:13:51random little things before one thing
- 00:13:53works out in my case I had like eight or
- 00:13:55nine failed businesses that just I
- 00:13:57didn't make any money from before I
- 00:13:58finally built my first business when I
- 00:14:00was in medical school that actually
- 00:14:01succeeded and made some money but all of
- 00:14:02those different failures taught me the
- 00:14:04ropes of like how to build a website how
- 00:14:05to code how to accept payments how to
- 00:14:07like actually get customers for the
- 00:14:09first time and I just wouldn't have
- 00:14:10gotten any of that if I just spent all
- 00:14:11day watching YouTube videos and trying
- 00:14:13to read books and trying to come up with
- 00:14:14the perfect idea all right so now we
- 00:14:16move on to talking about the strange
- 00:14:17concept of difficulty as it relates to
- 00:14:19entrepreneurship even even when I speak
- 00:14:21to Izzy sometimes I'm sure she won't
- 00:14:22mind me mind me saying this but she
- 00:14:24often feels that YouTube feels really
- 00:14:26hard for her therefore she's a bad
- 00:14:27YouTuber and therefore she's not cut out
- 00:14:28for this I'm like bro if you got like
- 00:14:29700,000 subscribers with like 50 videos
- 00:14:31I had 700 subscribers when I had 50
- 00:14:33videos like come on and like by all
- 00:14:36objective standards is he is a very very
- 00:14:37good YouTuber and yet the fact that she
- 00:14:39feels it's hard makes her go to the
- 00:14:42conclusion that I suck mhm and I think a
- 00:14:45lot of people have this kind of
- 00:14:46conception that like if it's not
- 00:14:48effortless if if I'm not finding it easy
- 00:14:49from day one clearly I must be a bad
- 00:14:51Entre entrepreneur I'm not cut out for
- 00:14:53this you know uh I'm not like Elon mask
- 00:14:56I just don't have it in my DNA there's
- 00:14:57all these things that come up at the oh
- 00:15:00at the prospect of friction I don't know
- 00:15:02if you VIP with that at all like that's
- 00:15:03something that you've seen with with
- 00:15:04people that you know I think this is one
- 00:15:06reason why I find Alex Hero's content to
- 00:15:09be valuable I think this is one benefit
- 00:15:10of it is the idea of like pain tolerance
- 00:15:13just being able to deal with like the
- 00:15:14discomfort of something not working and
- 00:15:16often often times I come back to the
- 00:15:17fact that if it was so easy then
- 00:15:19everybody would do it and the fact that
- 00:15:21everybody can't do it is it has to be
- 00:15:23hard there has to be some level of
- 00:15:24discomfort um so yeah 100% I think well
- 00:15:28for the fact that Iz he has like 500
- 00:15:31plus thousand subscribers like that is
- 00:15:33unbelievable yeah like I'm still working
- 00:15:35to get there 4 years later so I would
- 00:15:36say yeah I I believe I think people have
- 00:15:39this expectation that something is going
- 00:15:40like you said something is going to be
- 00:15:41incredibly easy they they come into it
- 00:15:44they're like oh they encounter one
- 00:15:46roadblock and then it immediately falls
- 00:15:47falls apart again this is why I think
- 00:15:49that this law of Entrepreneurship which
- 00:15:50is that your first three businesses are
- 00:15:52probably going to fail and that is okay
- 00:15:53is really helpful to know I think that's
- 00:15:55why content like this and podcasts with
- 00:15:56other business owners are also really
- 00:15:58interesting to listen to because they
- 00:15:59all talk about how hard it is no one
- 00:16:01ever says oh yeah it was super easy and
- 00:16:03I was making money from day one they all
- 00:16:05talk about the difficulty of the process
- 00:16:06and so if you recognize that the process
- 00:16:08is going to be difficult when you find
- 00:16:09it difficult then you're not going to be
- 00:16:11surprised but if you think the process
- 00:16:13is going to be easy and you find it
- 00:16:15difficult which you will then you'll be
- 00:16:16very surprised and you're going to be a
- 00:16:17lot more likely to quit all right so now
- 00:16:19we move on to talking about the idea of
- 00:16:20friction and Aman is going to give an
- 00:16:22example from his singing lessons but I
- 00:16:23think there is a so much to be learned
- 00:16:25from this specific example I've been
- 00:16:27doing singing lessons for the past few
- 00:16:28years I'm like hey I want to find a
- 00:16:29singing teacher so Step One is like
- 00:16:32Google singing teacher Raleigh North
- 00:16:34Carolina to take that to to do that
- 00:16:36Google I've been thinking about it for a
- 00:16:37week okay I was thinking I should
- 00:16:39probably find a singing teacher first
- 00:16:40Google's a week later then scroll
- 00:16:42through click on a few websites ah none
- 00:16:44of this looks that good done for two
- 00:16:46weeks then I remember oh I should
- 00:16:47probably find a singing teacher I do the
- 00:16:49same Google again I look oh I find some
- 00:16:51person I F A contact form don't hear
- 00:16:53back for another few weeks okay then I
- 00:16:55come back and think oh I should probably
- 00:16:56find a singing teacher so it is actually
- 00:16:58it is kind of surprising to me how uh
- 00:17:00non-real it is to really do anything
- 00:17:02because often to get anything done you
- 00:17:04have to make five to 10 various attempts
- 00:17:06for it to happen and then it actually
- 00:17:08works out so for example if in your mind
- 00:17:10you're like okay I should probably start
- 00:17:11a I want to start a business what is an
- 00:17:13easy way to start a business oh I can
- 00:17:15start creating content online okay I
- 00:17:16have to create my Channel all right I'm
- 00:17:17going to go on YouTube I'm going to
- 00:17:18create a channel all right I have to
- 00:17:19film my video or I have to make a script
- 00:17:20now I'll do it tomorrow I'll do it later
- 00:17:22so I think there is there is like real
- 00:17:23value into like that sequential step by
- 00:17:25step by step and there's friction at
- 00:17:27every step of the way so if you're
- 00:17:28someone who can just like see things
- 00:17:30through to completion be like I am going
- 00:17:32to complete this no matter what it takes
- 00:17:35so for example if you're like I have to
- 00:17:36start a channel you can't just let
- 00:17:38yourself be satisfied with a trying to
- 00:17:39try I'm like I'm going to try to start a
- 00:17:41channel I'm going to like make an
- 00:17:42account I've done the work I've done it
- 00:17:44you have to do what's necessary to
- 00:17:45achieve the outcome rather than seeing
- 00:17:47the the effort as enough so this is
- 00:17:49something I've been thinking about a lot
- 00:17:50since I had that conversation with Aman
- 00:17:52that with anything you try and do there
- 00:17:54is friction at every single step and the
- 00:17:56trick is to be able to follow through
- 00:17:58and and get through the friction and
- 00:18:00this is where that mindset shift is
- 00:18:01really important to recognize which is
- 00:18:02that as soon as most people encounter
- 00:18:04friction they will just drop off the
- 00:18:06thing they'll just stop doing the thing
- 00:18:07be like oh this friction I'm not going
- 00:18:08to bother anymore but if you can be as
- 00:18:10it relates to starting a business or
- 00:18:11anything you want to do in that 1% of
- 00:18:13people that sees the friction recognizes
- 00:18:15okay this is friction this is normal I
- 00:18:17just need to work through the friction
- 00:18:19then you are far more likely to succeed
- 00:18:21at whatever you're doing all right so
- 00:18:22that was friction let's now talk about a
- 00:18:24really common excuse which is the timing
- 00:18:25is not right right now so we we do these
- 00:18:27like meetups for our YouTuber Academy
- 00:18:29and inevitably you know like 100 people
- 00:18:31will show up the majority of
- 00:18:32conversations I'll have with them I'll
- 00:18:33be like oh so how's the channel going
- 00:18:35and they'll say oh well I haven't been
- 00:18:37consistent with it for for the last few
- 00:18:38months or all this sort of stuff and
- 00:18:40they'll never say I have quit YouTube
- 00:18:43they will always say life got in the way
- 00:18:45it's not the right time right now and
- 00:18:48that's I think what is interesting about
- 00:18:49this it's sort of like this thing that
- 00:18:51you and I know because we we've consumed
- 00:18:52the Kool-Aid of the self-help books kind
- 00:18:54of not yet not right now is the thing
- 00:18:57that takes all the dreams to the Grave
- 00:18:58because the timing is never right we had
- 00:19:00talks in med school uh from um doctors
- 00:19:03with kids who are always like look if
- 00:19:04you want to have kids literally the
- 00:19:06timing is never right there will always
- 00:19:08be another exam you could take another
- 00:19:11step of the wrong that you could climb
- 00:19:12when you're a junior doctor you'll think
- 00:19:14oh once I once I get my exams out of the
- 00:19:16way once you got your exams out of the
- 00:19:17way you'll think ah well and I'm once
- 00:19:18I'm a senior registar once you're a
- 00:19:19senior registar you'll think when I'm a
- 00:19:21consultant when you're a consultant you
- 00:19:22think well I'm a junior consultant right
- 00:19:23now and you know once I find my feet and
- 00:19:25eventually you become 48 and you can't
- 00:19:26have kids anymore and they were like a
- 00:19:29lot of the message was like if you want
- 00:19:30to do something recognize that the
- 00:19:32timing will never ever ever feel right
- 00:19:34and you actually just need to do it
- 00:19:35right now and I think that is the thing
- 00:19:37that that's a thing that holds a lot of
- 00:19:39people back thinking the timing is not
- 00:19:40right right now honestly I feel like the
- 00:19:42mind is the worst enemy in fact it's
- 00:19:43like it's so easy to I feel like people
- 00:19:45are great at convincing themselves to to
- 00:19:48do to like basically not follow their
- 00:19:49own dreams it's like if you talk to
- 00:19:51anybody very often you cannot convince
- 00:19:53someone to do something like that
- 00:19:54because they have so much of of like
- 00:19:56arguments and baggage in their mind like
- 00:19:58if let say someone says oh not right now
- 00:20:00they can probably give you three to five
- 00:20:01reasons why now is not the right time we
- 00:20:03all have this fallacy in different
- 00:20:04spheres of our life like oh the timing
- 00:20:06is not quite right to do this thing but
- 00:20:08it's worth recognizing like the thing
- 00:20:10that I've always found helpful is to
- 00:20:11recognize that that is just
- 00:20:12procrastination in Disguise and for
- 00:20:14almost everything the timing is never
- 00:20:15going to be quite right and so what
- 00:20:17would happen if you just acted now
- 00:20:18assuming that the timing is never going
- 00:20:20to be right so you make the skill share
- 00:20:21class you're 19 years old you make the
- 00:20:23skill sh class you release it presumably
- 00:20:25nothing much happens what happens next
- 00:20:28what happens next is I just start taking
- 00:20:31action on all these different things I
- 00:20:33hear from you and other people so for
- 00:20:34example I also just launch a Blog and an
- 00:20:36email newsletter at the same time so
- 00:20:39week one is skillshare week two is blog
- 00:20:42so bottle domain make a website Nat a
- 00:20:44license preaching webflow so I use
- 00:20:46webflow build that website I read a
- 00:20:49bunch of books to start writing book
- 00:20:50reviews I start a newsletter thoughtful
- 00:20:51Thursday still around weekly email
- 00:20:53newsletter start posting that every
- 00:20:54single week great that's done then after
- 00:20:57that week three or four I'm like hey you
- 00:20:59know someone's saying to make a YouTube
- 00:21:01channel maybe I should start this
- 00:21:02YouTube channel thing so I also launched
- 00:21:04a YouTube channel around that time it
- 00:21:06was July 2020 I think to myself I
- 00:21:09actually have a document that I wrote in
- 00:21:10a car on a road trip which is what are
- 00:21:12my what can I teach what can I talk
- 00:21:14about in YouTube channel I still have
- 00:21:15that document available um I was good at
- 00:21:17the saxophone in high school so I was
- 00:21:18like oh I can make music videos with the
- 00:21:20saxophone I was great at doing
- 00:21:22standardized test like I mentioned
- 00:21:23earlier I can talk about that I can talk
- 00:21:25about studying in University I can like
- 00:21:27talk about my my in college so I just
- 00:21:30decided hey I like Apple I'm a computer
- 00:21:32science student I'm going to film a
- 00:21:33video called why the MacBook Pro is
- 00:21:35perfect for computer science students so
- 00:21:36that was my first video on my channel
- 00:21:38it's still available right now posted
- 00:21:39that July of 2020 it's terrible quality
- 00:21:42the lighting is bad the audio is
- 00:21:43terrible I have no conviction when I
- 00:21:45speak whatsoever but I decided to just
- 00:21:47do something launch my channel and I
- 00:21:49think you were also at the time talking
- 00:21:51about how the consistency is key you
- 00:21:52just kind of have to stay I think there
- 00:21:53was like an MKBHD y combinator interview
- 00:21:56that's the one where he was like if you
- 00:21:59just stick with anything for 10 years
- 00:22:00it's hard to not be successful at it so
- 00:22:02I just set the intention I'm just going
- 00:22:03to post something every single week so I
- 00:22:05just started making videos on studying
- 00:22:07computer science Quizlet versus anky
- 00:22:11todoist things
- 00:22:13three just like budget bad quality
- 00:22:17productivity videos and studying in
- 00:22:18computer science while also running the
- 00:22:20newsletter while also being a student so
- 00:22:22that was year one I made 20 something
- 00:22:24videos just consistently and I had maybe
- 00:22:261,000 subscribers or 500 or actually I
- 00:22:28think I only had like 100 subscribers in
- 00:22:29year one so I just consistently post it
- 00:22:32every single week on something I could
- 00:22:33think of every single week I think this
- 00:22:34is the harsh truth about trying to make
- 00:22:36money on the internet or trying to build
- 00:22:37any kind of business online which is
- 00:22:39that if you are trying to go for an
- 00:22:40extraordinary outcome if you're trying
- 00:22:42to go for something that most people do
- 00:22:44not have you often have to put in more
- 00:22:46work than most people are willing to do
- 00:22:48there is almost no one I have ever met
- 00:22:50who's made enough money to be able to
- 00:22:51quit their job who didn't have to
- 00:22:53sacrifice something to make that happen
- 00:22:55and it's really just a case of what are
- 00:22:56the trade-offs you are willing to pay
- 00:22:58what is the price that you are willing
- 00:22:59to pay in my case for example I didn't
- 00:23:01need to sacrifice hanging out with
- 00:23:02friends and family but I did need to
- 00:23:04sacrifice watching Netflix watching TV I
- 00:23:07set a rule for myself when I got to
- 00:23:08University which is I'm never allowed to
- 00:23:10watch TV shows on my own instead of
- 00:23:11using that time watching Netflix I would
- 00:23:13sacrifice that time and put it towards
- 00:23:15my YouTube channel or my business or
- 00:23:16writing my book everything has a price
- 00:23:17and if you don't want to pay that price
- 00:23:19that's totally okay you don't have to
- 00:23:20but it's worth recognizing that if you
- 00:23:22want the thing on the other end of that
- 00:23:23hard work on the other end of that
- 00:23:25sacrifice you kind of have to pay the
- 00:23:26price and also what I did was I was just
- 00:23:29consuming all of this self-improvement
- 00:23:31productivity self-development content
- 00:23:33and I also think that is underrated I
- 00:23:35think there's a lot of people out there
- 00:23:36who tell who say it's all the same stuff
- 00:23:38it's all the same idea why do you why do
- 00:23:40you have to watch every single one of
- 00:23:41this person's videos or why do you have
- 00:23:42to read every single one of this book
- 00:23:43it's all the same thing you already know
- 00:23:44what you have to do but there's
- 00:23:46something about just hearing that
- 00:23:47message over and over and over and over
- 00:23:50and over again of you just have to stay
- 00:23:52consistent you have to keep doing this
- 00:23:53you have to keep doing this unless it's
- 00:23:54not going to work out um and on that
- 00:23:56note I would just Implement all these
- 00:23:58little productivity hacks and techniques
- 00:23:59so for example one thing that probably
- 00:24:01made 50% of my progress was Thomas Frank
- 00:24:04he made this video about how he would
- 00:24:05get charged by this app called be minder
- 00:24:07if you didn't wake up on time so I
- 00:24:09watched that about four to five years
- 00:24:11ago and I decided to like make that
- 00:24:12automation but for posting on YouTube so
- 00:24:15be minder would charge me $100 if I
- 00:24:17didn't post every single week to my
- 00:24:20credit card and I've already paid them
- 00:24:21over
- 00:24:22$1,000 because I did miss many weeks but
- 00:24:26and people thought I was crazy when I
- 00:24:27told them this I was like yeah dude like
- 00:24:29I get charged of it on post on time so
- 00:24:31that also was just like the fuel on the
- 00:24:33fire just building these small things to
- 00:24:35like force myself to stay consistent in
- 00:24:37year one in year 2 and year three so
- 00:24:39yeah year one posted 20 30 videos they
- 00:24:41were all right they were not that good
- 00:24:44and just like trying to come up with
- 00:24:45these things to motivate me to keep on
- 00:24:46going over time that's a long time to
- 00:24:48grind at it for without seeing any
- 00:24:50results that's very impressive like I'm
- 00:24:52amazed I would I wouldn't have done that
- 00:24:54yeah you know you always talk about how
- 00:24:56I think it was like for you what like
- 00:24:58six to 12 months in when you had like
- 00:25:01viral video or something yeah about 10
- 00:25:02months in I had a viral video 10 months
- 00:25:03in yeah I hear that I'm like I think you
- 00:25:05posted a lot more than me though like
- 00:25:07video for me video 91 was a viral yeah
- 00:25:09yeah I've only ever posted like 90 full
- 00:25:11L videos or something at this point so
- 00:25:12for me I think I was posting like less
- 00:25:14frequently but over a longer period of
- 00:25:15time I actually went 16 or 18 months
- 00:25:18before my first video Hit 100K views I
- 00:25:20think it was also just consuming other
- 00:25:22people's content where you're talking
- 00:25:23about I think this is another thing I
- 00:25:24don't think you realize the impact that
- 00:25:26you have when you actually rehash the
- 00:25:27same ideas over and over and over and
- 00:25:29over again cuz I see the comments being
- 00:25:30like Oh just repetition and I think oh
- 00:25:32like it's like a knife a knife to my
- 00:25:34heart where I'm like am I just saying
- 00:25:36the same I guess I am just saying the
- 00:25:37same I mean yeah I guess I guess yeah
- 00:25:41and then I think I don't want to make
- 00:25:42this video because I'm just saying the
- 00:25:43same thing again to saying the same
- 00:25:45thing again but there is really
- 00:25:46something to be said about saying the
- 00:25:47same thing over and over and over again
- 00:25:49because that is the message you need to
- 00:25:50hear like someone like me I needed to
- 00:25:53hear every single week from o doll's
- 00:25:55Channel just stay consistent just stay
- 00:25:57consistent just stay consistent I'm
- 00:25:59reading this book on the side just just
- 00:26:00stay consistent so there is something
- 00:26:02special to that and like even on my own
- 00:26:04channel I often say the same thing every
- 00:26:05video and I also get those comments
- 00:26:06which are like bro falling yeah bro
- 00:26:09falling off bro saying the same thing
- 00:26:11bro remakes the same video every month
- 00:26:13like but that is what you actually have
- 00:26:16to do there's a concept that Aman and I
- 00:26:17were discussing over lunch that day when
- 00:26:19when he came over to hang out which is
- 00:26:21that your YouTube feed reflects your
- 00:26:22priorities like the algorithms on
- 00:26:24YouTube and Instagram and Tik Tok
- 00:26:25they're all pretty good at figuring out
- 00:26:27what we actually care about what we
- 00:26:28actually spend our time on and so a fun
- 00:26:30little exercise is to go on your YouTube
- 00:26:31homepage and see what's the sort of
- 00:26:33content that's coming up is it the sort
- 00:26:35of content that is aligned with the
- 00:26:36goals that you want to go for or not you
- 00:26:38can actively start to pay more attention
- 00:26:40to content that is aligned with your
- 00:26:41goals like if you're here in this video
- 00:26:43you probably want to build some kind of
- 00:26:44business to probably make money on the
- 00:26:45internet it would make sense for you to
- 00:26:47just consume loads more of that content
- 00:26:49compared to other things that you might
- 00:26:51be consuming in your spare time instead
- 00:26:52again if you want you don't have to I'm
- 00:26:54not trying to tell you what to do Aman
- 00:26:55is not trying to tell you what to do
- 00:26:56we're just sharing the stuff that has
- 00:26:57worked for us for me I deeply
- 00:26:59intrinsically cared about YouTube it was
- 00:27:01it was my dream it was my passion it was
- 00:27:03what I wanted to work out I actually
- 00:27:04remember I was late to work multiple
- 00:27:06days because I was so engrossed in
- 00:27:07writing my script in the morning before
- 00:27:09work that I would show up late I would
- 00:27:11take unnecessarily long lunch breaks to
- 00:27:13work on the channel so much told them
- 00:27:15like I told you about the conversation
- 00:27:16with my boss he was not happy about that
- 00:27:18I would leave early to work on the
- 00:27:19channel and I I don't think it was a
- 00:27:23grind but it also wasn't that much of a
- 00:27:24grind because I had that flame it was
- 00:27:26like oh like I can't wait to get home I
- 00:27:27can't wait to ride a script like I would
- 00:27:29I would watch my own videos with the
- 00:27:31zest like the editors came back with the
- 00:27:32new cut like I'm so excited to watch
- 00:27:33that there were times where during my 9
- 00:27:35to5 job but I actually I would go into
- 00:27:37the meeting room which is like a
- 00:27:38separate room I would like lock the door
- 00:27:40go on my laptop and watch a cut of my
- 00:27:41cut of my recent video cuz I was like
- 00:27:43and I guess you're not supposed to do
- 00:27:45that but it was something I was so
- 00:27:46intrinsically excited to watch so I I
- 00:27:49think I just had like a joy of kind of
- 00:27:51going back to like enjoying the journey
- 00:27:52right I think I at the time like I'm
- 00:27:54only now realizing I think I really did
- 00:27:56love that because of was outside of my 9
- 00:27:57to5 job so was something that I
- 00:27:59intrinsically really did care about so
- 00:28:02if it was something where like I it was
- 00:28:03a massive slug every single part of the
- 00:28:05journey if I hated it I it would not
- 00:28:07have worked out at all yeah that's I
- 00:28:09think where you know when people ask me
- 00:28:11about my days where I was like how how
- 00:28:13did you do the thing while you were
- 00:28:14doing the J day job and stuff and it it
- 00:28:16it comes down to that nalism of like
- 00:28:19find the thing that feels like play to
- 00:28:20you but looks like work to others to
- 00:28:22others it would look like work to be
- 00:28:24grinding on a video edit or whatever at
- 00:28:26like you know 7:00 p.m. 800 p.m. 9:00
- 00:28:27p.m. after after a shift at work but for
- 00:28:30me at the time and it sounds like for
- 00:28:31you as well it was like I was delighted
- 00:28:32to do it there were some days where I
- 00:28:33didn't feel like it where you know
- 00:28:34that's where the beinder reminded that's
- 00:28:36where like the consistency it's like H
- 00:28:38okay on those days where I really don't
- 00:28:40feel like doing it I'm still going to do
- 00:28:41it that's where I have to motivate
- 00:28:43myself with the dream with the negative
- 00:28:44visualization with all that kind of
- 00:28:45stuff but for the most part because I
- 00:28:48enjoyed the process it didn't feel like
- 00:28:50work trying to find ways to sprinkle in
- 00:28:53play Power people into all the stuff
- 00:28:54field of productivity all that shtick
- 00:28:56trying to make it fun because that fun
- 00:28:58was where like the the excitement that
- 00:29:01excitement and motivation was was was
- 00:29:02generated by I'm still chasing that
- 00:29:04flame honestly like I remember yeah
- 00:29:07there there certain things where it's
- 00:29:08like something about toiling away on
- 00:29:10like a landing page at like 8:00 p.m.
- 00:29:11for a new product I don't know what
- 00:29:13about that is Sox love that like I
- 00:29:16remember when I launched my program in
- 00:29:18January of this year I was in London for
- 00:29:20a couple weeks just for vacation and I
- 00:29:22was in you know foils like in in London
- 00:29:25I was like upstairs in their Cafe just
- 00:29:27toiling just like grinding on that
- 00:29:28landing page and I was so happy I don't
- 00:29:30know why it was just something about
- 00:29:31like it being the dark and just grinding
- 00:29:33and building out this page and same to
- 00:29:34like watching cuts of my video like
- 00:29:36working on a script and of course there
- 00:29:37were times that I I wasn't intrinsically
- 00:29:39motivated I think for me I don't really
- 00:29:41enjoy filming videos
- 00:29:43same I much prefer this this for 100% I
- 00:29:46think this is way more fun and it it is
- 00:29:48a bit of a grind like I have three video
- 00:29:51scripts I have two video scripts done I
- 00:29:52need to sit down I have to build a setup
- 00:29:54I have to sit down I record it it's a
- 00:29:55big ruling it's my my throat hurts it's
- 00:29:57a bit sweaty like I don't like to do
- 00:29:59this I have to keep Mo motivating myself
- 00:30:01to keep going but for the most part you
- 00:30:03I do intrinsically enjoy it I I don't
- 00:30:05know if it's possible maybe it is
- 00:30:07possible but I don't know if it's really
- 00:30:09practical for for anyone to do anything
- 00:30:12longterm enough to make it work because
- 00:30:13again like this was four years of grind
- 00:30:16if I hated every minute of it there's no
- 00:30:18way I would have done that I really
- 00:30:19agree with this I found it to be so true
- 00:30:20in the lives of most people that I know
- 00:30:22including myself which is that it's just
- 00:30:23impractical to do something for a really
- 00:30:25long time if you absolutely hate it if
- 00:30:27you don't find a way to enjoy the
- 00:30:28process this is kind of the whole
- 00:30:29concept of my book feel good
- 00:30:30productivity you know back when I was
- 00:30:31grinding on my YouTube channel and stuff
- 00:30:33I was really focusing on how do I make
- 00:30:34this so enjoyable that I choose to keep
- 00:30:36working on it rather than forcing myself
- 00:30:38to keep working on it now I want to
- 00:30:39share a common objection here so you
- 00:30:41know I've heard people again when when I
- 00:30:43do talks and stuff people come up to me
- 00:30:44and say you know well someone will hear
- 00:30:46this advice of hey you should do
- 00:30:47something you enjoy because then you
- 00:30:49you're going to be more consistent with
- 00:30:50it you're going to stick to it and some
- 00:30:51people will say but what if I have
- 00:30:53nothing in my life that I actually enjoy
- 00:30:55I don't have any passions I just like
- 00:30:56watching Netflix and playing video games
- 00:30:58and scrolling social media this is the
- 00:30:59thing like we all have hobbies which are
- 00:31:02things that we do for fun but in the
- 00:31:04capitalist world that we live in there
- 00:31:06are some hobbies that let you double dip
- 00:31:07in terms of you have fun doing the hobby
- 00:31:09but you could also make money or you
- 00:31:10could also become healthier or you could
- 00:31:12also have more love in your life through
- 00:31:13relationships for example sitting on the
- 00:31:15couch and watching Netflix sure maybe
- 00:31:16that makes you happy but if for example
- 00:31:19you go for a run that can make you happy
- 00:31:22and also makes you healthier what about
- 00:31:24playing board games playing board games
- 00:31:25makes you happy but it can also improve
- 00:31:28your relationships because you generally
- 00:31:29want to have friends over to play board
- 00:31:31games one of my hobbies back at
- 00:31:32University was doing hackathon side
- 00:31:34projects with my friends where we would
- 00:31:36go on a mini holiday together and we
- 00:31:37would try and build an app within 24
- 00:31:39hours that could make some money that
- 00:31:40was a hobby that would make me happy
- 00:31:42because it was fun but it also improved
- 00:31:44my relationships cuz now I'm hanging out
- 00:31:45with my friends and it also had the
- 00:31:46potential to make money I'm not saying
- 00:31:48you have to spend all of your time doing
- 00:31:49productive things but what I'm saying is
- 00:31:50that if you care about making money on
- 00:31:52the internet which you probably do if
- 00:31:53you're watching at this point in the
- 00:31:55video if you care about that and you
- 00:31:56have limited time which we all do then
- 00:31:58actually finding hobbies that double dip
- 00:32:00finding hobbies that are fun and also
- 00:32:02have the potential to make money is
- 00:32:03going to make you way more likely to
- 00:32:04make money compared to having hobbies
- 00:32:06that are simply just fun I think also
- 00:32:08there's there's something around you
- 00:32:09won't know until you've tried it like I
- 00:32:13wouldn't have thought that like I
- 00:32:15thought I wanted to be a like a singing
- 00:32:17guitar acoustic sort of Music YouTuber
- 00:32:20and that to me felt fun because I was
- 00:32:21like oh that feels fun but I wouldn't
- 00:32:23have thought that writing educational
- 00:32:25content and like coming up with
- 00:32:25Frameworks and would actually be
- 00:32:26enjoyable but it actually is
- 00:32:28and it's like it's kind of fun I know a
- 00:32:30lot of people who count themselves out
- 00:32:32of the business game or they'll hear a
- 00:32:34conversation like this being like oh man
- 00:32:36I get okay so the secret is to really
- 00:32:38enjoy the thing but I don't I don't know
- 00:32:39what I'd really enjoy and that's what's
- 00:32:41stopping them from they're they're
- 00:32:43almost like self- projecting ahead
- 00:32:44knowing that like okay I mean Ali and
- 00:32:47Aman are saying that you've got to grind
- 00:32:48at YouTube for like 2 to four years to
- 00:32:49see any results can I see myself right
- 00:32:51now without having a YouTube channel
- 00:32:53enjoying that process absolutely
- 00:32:54absolutely not like who would who who
- 00:32:57would think that they might even enjoy
- 00:32:58that person but when you start with it
- 00:33:00when you when you're building the thing
- 00:33:01and you're seeing those initial bits of
- 00:33:04momentum and stuff there's something
- 00:33:06about that that lights the flame that is
- 00:33:08so hard to predict ahead of time so when
- 00:33:10did things start working mhm okaying so
- 00:33:12Midway through year four I I honestly
- 00:33:15Define one of the biggest inflection
- 00:33:16points is realizing that I could spend
- 00:33:18money on knowledge which I had not
- 00:33:20actually realized nor internalized for
- 00:33:22much at all other than buying books so
- 00:33:25i' had been buying books for years that
- 00:33:26was something I was reading in the
- 00:33:27background I was reading many books but
- 00:33:29there were two great unlocks I had in
- 00:33:31year four which was actually about a
- 00:33:33year ago the first one was realizing
- 00:33:34that I could read business books which
- 00:33:36is something I just did not realize I
- 00:33:38was like wait there are books on
- 00:33:39business that I could read like for
- 00:33:41example all of Russell brunson's books
- 00:33:43Alex Hero's books just these books on
- 00:33:45sales and marketing I can read to just
- 00:33:47like level up my brain in the world of
- 00:33:48business I didn't realize that was a
- 00:33:49thing that was one great unlock the
- 00:33:51second one was realizing that I could
- 00:33:53buying that I could buy coaching from
- 00:33:55people who have done the thing I've done
- 00:33:57and then learned their lessons and
- 00:33:58supercharge my progress and I
- 00:34:00procrastinated for months on doing this
- 00:34:02so the first thing I actually invested
- 00:34:03in was Captain ced's YouTube coaching
- 00:34:05program I've been watching his videos
- 00:34:06for years it was the first time I spent
- 00:34:08money on anything and because of that it
- 00:34:11created like a level of fire and drive
- 00:34:13to actually perform so I believe he said
- 00:34:15later on that I was probably the best
- 00:34:17client he ever had of like over 100
- 00:34:19people because I showed up to there were
- 00:34:2124 calls and I didn't miss a single one
- 00:34:23um I was on a plane for two of them so I
- 00:34:25bought Wi-Fi on the plane and joined
- 00:34:26zoom using a VPN so I could actually
- 00:34:29show up to the call and not miss it and
- 00:34:30I said a video Al Loom beforehand of
- 00:34:32like all of my questions for him that I
- 00:34:33had before so I listened to if he said
- 00:34:36jump I said how high and that
- 00:34:38immediately supercharged everything
- 00:34:39because up until this point I had a
- 00:34:41bunch of like raw potential I had a
- 00:34:42bunch of like building blocks there I
- 00:34:44had done a bunch of internships that
- 00:34:45gave me an unfair advantage that I could
- 00:34:47actually talk about on YouTube I had the
- 00:34:49skills I had a video editor so I knew
- 00:34:51how to like edit videos and also had to
- 00:34:52manage a video editor I had built a
- 00:34:54skill of writing so I was like pretty
- 00:34:56decent at actually writing these scripts
- 00:34:57and I could write them effectively but
- 00:34:59he basically like put fuel on the flame
- 00:35:01when it came to making marker research
- 00:35:03or making good videos titles and
- 00:35:04thumbnails he also taught me how to
- 00:35:05negotiate sponsors and he told me hey
- 00:35:08you have something that you can teach
- 00:35:10which is getting internships and getting
- 00:35:11jobs in software engineering is
- 00:35:13something you've done before so you
- 00:35:15could probably charge people to actually
- 00:35:18make the transformation and it is worth
- 00:35:20it like that knowledge is worth 203k if
- 00:35:22I can get someone a 20 to $30,000
- 00:35:24internship if they couldn't get before
- 00:35:25so it was that mental unlock which made
- 00:35:27me decide to actually launch my program
- 00:35:29which is a software engineering
- 00:35:30accelerator um to actually make that
- 00:35:32progress happen so that was the greatest
- 00:35:34unlock it was buying programs some
- 00:35:36people might be hearing that and
- 00:35:37thinking well I can't believe you sign
- 00:35:39up for these courses like all course
- 00:35:40sellers are scammers what's your take
- 00:35:42what's your take on that I think loss AV
- 00:35:44version is a big issue that a lot of
- 00:35:45people face which is that they would
- 00:35:47they're more worried about losing $5
- 00:35:50than they would be excited about earning
- 00:35:52$100 people often fight that uh issue of
- 00:35:55loss of version like if you kind of like
- 00:35:57think about it in terms of time for
- 00:35:59money right people would take a lot of
- 00:36:01people would spend an hour taking the
- 00:36:02bus to avoid $20 for an Uber but they
- 00:36:05wouldn't spend an hour doing like a
- 00:36:07freelance gig for $50 right that doesn't
- 00:36:09make any sense that's like an asymmetry
- 00:36:11there so you kind of have to like like a
- 00:36:13fool yourself into like overcoming the
- 00:36:15like innate urge for loss aversion think
- 00:36:17about the fact that what is the risk
- 00:36:18reduction here right like there is a
- 00:36:20guarantee almost every single program
- 00:36:21you'll ever pay for as a guarantee
- 00:36:23because these most of these things are
- 00:36:24good and worth it where it's like if you
- 00:36:25do this thing and if you do X number of
- 00:36:27things or you can get a refund if it's
- 00:36:29not actually good there are a bunch of
- 00:36:30reviews and testimonials and even if the
- 00:36:32program only gets me a few thousand in a
- 00:36:35year it will have paid for itself and
- 00:36:37the chances are it's going to get me a
- 00:36:38lot more there so you need to like kind
- 00:36:40of overcome that that that thought there
- 00:36:42and finally I think a lot of people
- 00:36:44don't really realize what knowledge they
- 00:36:46don't have that could actually get them
- 00:36:49really help them out a lot so what I
- 00:36:51would often think back to is could I
- 00:36:53influence my 17-year-old self to do
- 00:36:55great things beyond what I already did
- 00:36:57one 100% there's so much knowledge I've
- 00:37:00learned over the past few years in the
- 00:37:01world of careers and world of Education
- 00:37:03the world of health and wellness and and
- 00:37:05relationships everything you've learned
- 00:37:07so much through this like living life
- 00:37:08for years and years and years so how do
- 00:37:11you not realize that you can just pay
- 00:37:13someone else who's three to five years
- 00:37:14ahead of you just to download their
- 00:37:16knowledge and get yourself ahead yeah I
- 00:37:17love that I think um there's something
- 00:37:19uh this is something Alexy talks about
- 00:37:21as well like he's invested hundreds of
- 00:37:22thousands into these programs and his
- 00:37:24goal is to be the best student they've
- 00:37:25ever had and to like eventually like
- 00:37:26outpace the instructor because of how
- 00:37:28much he's executing uh my friend
- 00:37:30Nicholas Cole talks about how every
- 00:37:32single thing he's ever paid for has been
- 00:37:34Roi positive because he's made it Roi
- 00:37:35positive he pay $68,000 for a mastermind
- 00:37:38he get and he's like okay well I need to
- 00:37:40make sure I get at least $130,000 out of
- 00:37:42this and therefore he's showing up to
- 00:37:43the stuff he's doing the extra work he
- 00:37:45he is taking responsibility for making
- 00:37:47sure he gets the outcome from it I think
- 00:37:49the mistake people make is that a they
- 00:37:50don't sign up to the stuff in the first
- 00:37:51place because of yeah this this sort of
- 00:37:53loss aversion but you know case in point
- 00:37:55with our YouTuber Academy like you're
- 00:37:56one of the the the most students we have
- 00:37:58in our accelerator that when when you
- 00:37:59when you rock up to a call to ask me a
- 00:38:01question you prepare a freaking document
- 00:38:03to be like okay this is all here here
- 00:38:05are all my problems these are my goals
- 00:38:07these are the things I think you're
- 00:38:08going to say here's what I would say in
- 00:38:09response so this is really my ultimate
- 00:38:11question you prepare for those questions
- 00:38:13so much more than almost anyone else
- 00:38:15does and you're getting value out of the
- 00:38:17program and so a lot of it is like you
- 00:38:19get what you put in um and I think you
- 00:38:21and like other entrepreneur friends of
- 00:38:23mine in including myself it's like if I
- 00:38:25sign up for anything of course I'm going
- 00:38:26to get the value out of it I'm not mhm
- 00:38:27if it's a trivial cost for like you $200
- 00:38:29for what it doesn't matter but if I'm
- 00:38:31paying serious money for anything like
- 00:38:33it's it's guaranteed to be Ro positive
- 00:38:35because I will make it Roi positive
- 00:38:36absolutely so you've invested all this
- 00:38:37money into these educational programs
- 00:38:39you've been grinding the out for 4
- 00:38:40years how did it go how much money are
- 00:38:42you making now so in June of this year I
- 00:38:44joined another coaching program from
- 00:38:46Charlie Morgan another guy he basically
- 00:38:48taught me sales conversion fulfillment
- 00:38:50for my coaching program almost
- 00:38:52immediately I went from barely making 5
- 00:38:556K a month through like a handful of
- 00:38:56brand deals here in and there some
- 00:38:58random agency work on the side you know
- 00:39:00stuff like that to becoming profitable
- 00:39:02so I went from negative - 20K in the
- 00:39:04whole on the business for 2024 and
- 00:39:07immediately hit profitability in July I
- 00:39:09hit $30,000 August also did 30k
- 00:39:11September did around 30k October did 22k
- 00:39:15but then November I had 55k in Revenue
- 00:39:18December it's around 36k right now um
- 00:39:22and expenses are like around
- 00:39:2510K a month on average so I've been able
- 00:39:29to make around 20K profit per month
- 00:39:32every month for the past six months
- 00:39:34which is almost double my full-time
- 00:39:36income as a software engineer and I quit
- 00:39:38my job about four to five months before
- 00:39:41I hit that profitability how does it
- 00:39:43feel yeah it feels good I mean it's nice
- 00:39:45I think there's a lot of layers to it
- 00:39:46first of all I have a sense of
- 00:39:47confidence that I am not going to have
- 00:39:50to go back to the 9 to5 job if you I
- 00:39:52actually made a video cataloging this
- 00:39:54journey um like a life update in May of
- 00:39:562024 where I mentioned how I need to
- 00:39:58make 4K a month profit and then with
- 00:40:01that number that was like my freedom
- 00:40:02number if you used a million dollar
- 00:40:03weekend term where I won't have to go
- 00:40:05back to my 95 job and I've blown that
- 00:40:07out of the park so at this point I can
- 00:40:09pretty confidently say I don't expect to
- 00:40:11have to go back to a 95 job if I don't
- 00:40:13want to so that's nice that I feel like
- 00:40:15I have that sense of security it's also
- 00:40:18nice that I have freedom and flexibility
- 00:40:20I think that was like people like us I
- 00:40:22think that idea of freedom was like a
- 00:40:24huge deal to me I I hated the fact that
- 00:40:26I had to ask my boss if I was allowed to
- 00:40:29take a PTO a day off here and there like
- 00:40:32last year when I was in London for a
- 00:40:34couple weeks I remember being so
- 00:40:35stressed out because I had to work one
- 00:40:37week remotely for my 9 to-5 job I was
- 00:40:39worried about the US hour so I had to
- 00:40:41stay up super late at like 11:00 p.m.
- 00:40:43randomly just to continue doing this job
- 00:40:46and I just had no flexibility whatsoever
- 00:40:48and now I can be here in Hong Kong I can
- 00:40:50record this podcast with you I just
- 00:40:51complet I can do whatever I want
- 00:40:52essentially and I just feel like that is
- 00:40:55like infinitely valuable what advice
- 00:40:56would you give to someone who's maybe
- 00:40:58watched this far in the video maybe
- 00:40:59they've some watched some of my stuff
- 00:41:01they've seen some of you know they've
- 00:41:03they've done the rounds of consuming
- 00:41:04content and maybe even read some of the
- 00:41:05books but they've not yet taken the
- 00:41:07first step taking action what advice
- 00:41:09would you have for that person there's a
- 00:41:10couple things first of all I have
- 00:41:12benefited immensely for paying for
- 00:41:13educational resources I think a lot of
- 00:41:15people will do this for University so
- 00:41:17they'll pay for a $200,000 Business
- 00:41:19Degree at a college which frankly
- 00:41:21doesn't teach you much but they will B
- 00:41:24at like a $1,000 program or like a
- 00:41:26$2,000 program
- 00:41:27which is teaching you business but is
- 00:41:29updated for like the content ecosystem
- 00:41:31and modern day marketing right so if you
- 00:41:34have the capability I would recommend it
- 00:41:36doesn't have to be any program I
- 00:41:38mentioned in this conversation but
- 00:41:39anything like if you find hey I want to
- 00:41:41learn this knowledge I find it valuable
- 00:41:42I really care about this I would
- 00:41:44recommend you invest in your own skills
- 00:41:47rather than like you know putting that
- 00:41:48money in the stock market at this point
- 00:41:50heroi talks about this it's pretty known
- 00:41:52I feel like if you're already in this
- 00:41:53podcast but like $1,000 in the S&P 500
- 00:41:56is going to make you like 50 bucks at
- 00:41:58the end of the year instead that, you
- 00:42:00can like 10 to 100x that if you actually
- 00:42:02invest in your own Knowledge and Skills
- 00:42:03so I benefited immensely by investing my
- 00:42:06money that I took from my 9 to5 job and
- 00:42:08also my internships investing in Te
- 00:42:09Knowledge and Skills and honestly just
- 00:42:12keep doing it it like this is a case
- 00:42:14study that it is possible it is still
- 00:42:16possible to make a profitable YouTube
- 00:42:17channel from not much it takes time it
- 00:42:20is not easy it takes effort but just
- 00:42:23know that if you are someone who is
- 00:42:26willing to invest in your Knowledge and
- 00:42:27Skills keep on going stay consistent and
- 00:42:31just keep grinding until it works out it
- 00:42:32is possible I can confidently say that
- 00:42:34one can make 10K month online from
- 00:42:36almost nothing so I would just say keep
- 00:42:38going you can do this all right if you
- 00:42:39got to this point in the video and you
- 00:42:40enjoyed this conversation then you're
- 00:42:41going to absolutely love this video
- 00:42:43which is my honest advice for someone
- 00:42:44who wants passive income thank you so
- 00:42:45much for watching have a lovely day and
- 00:42:47I'll see you in the next video bye-bye
