Summary

TLDRThis video discusses the current situation of the Porsche Taycan, a luxury electric vehicle, notably its heavy depreciation. The speaker, who works for an independent used electric car dealer, explains factors contributing to this situation. Porsche's electrification journey began with the Mission E concept, heralding the Taycan's introduction. Initially successful, it outperformed the Porsche 911 in 2021 sales due to demand for electric vehicles driven by government incentives and lower operational costs compared to fossil fuels. However, the global semiconductor shortage severely impacted production capabilities. The COVID-19 pandemic added another layer of complexity. This created supply-demand imbalances, exacerbating the situation when fuel prices began to stabilize and electricity prices rose in 2022, discouraging electric vehicle purchases. From a market perspective, many consumers prefer more practical SUVs, evidenced by the rising popularity of models like the Skoda Enyaq. Tesla, in contrast, adapted quickly by reducing vehicle prices, maintaining their market presence due to a robust charging infrastructure and aggressive pricing strategies. For the Taycan, challenges included positioning it as a flagship amidst infrastructure delays and changes in consumer behavior. Ultimately, high depreciation rates make the Taycan appealing on the used market, but potential buyers need to consider factors like resale value and service costs. The speaker advises exploring different purchasing options, emphasizing deep research into vehicle suitability and financial planning before buying a Taycan.

Timeline

  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

Martin shares his opinions on the current Porsche Taycan situation, discussing the high depreciation they suffer. He explains that Porsche's commitment to electrification began with the Mission E concept in 2015, leading to the Taycan's development. The Taycan was revolutionary with its 800-volt battery allowing fast charging and consistent performance, becoming a benchmark by 2019. However, supply chain issues and fuel shortages, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, affected the supply and demand, causing a spike in Taycan's demand and prices.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:10:00

In 2022 and 2023, the situation changes as supply catches up with demand, and electricity costs rise due to previous fuel shortages affecting natural gas prices impacting electricity rates through a delayed effect. Infrastructure for EVs, including the Taycan, was inadequate, compounding issues. The Taycan faced market struggles due to being a high-performance luxury saloon, a segment shrinking in the UK, alongside recall issues common with first-gen models. Comparatively, more versatile EVs like Tesla didn't depreciate as badly due to consistent demand and better infrastructure support.

  • 00:10:00 - 00:15:00

The discussion turns to Tesla's strategy of sudden price cuts to manage supply and demand, contrasting Porsche's situation where the Taycan was less popular yet underwent price increases. Despite being a significant EV success for Porsche initially, less affordable models led them to reposition Taycan as a high-end luxury flagship, while the Macan aimed at the mass market. This repositioning reflected a strategy creating short-term challenges, yet aligning with Porsche's long-term goals of electrification.

  • 00:15:00 - 00:24:07

The video concludes by comparing the Taycan with other EVs, emphasizing its unsuitability for most UK buyers given financial and market considerations, leading to high depreciation despite being a luxury model. Advice is offered on purchasing decisions, noting the importance of understanding market conditions and personal usage needs when considering a Taycan or other electric vehicles, stressing the importance of proper financial planning and potential warranty extensions for first-generation models.

hello it's Martin and I thought I would
  • 00:00:02
share my opinions on the current Porsche
  • 00:00:04
Dayan situation because yes they are
  • 00:00:06
lovely vehicles in many aspects but they
  • 00:00:08
are most famous or at this point rather
  • 00:00:10
Infamous for the heavy depreciation they
  • 00:00:14
suffer big disclaimer before I proceed
  • 00:00:16
the reason why I think I can share my
  • 00:00:18
thoughts and they are of somewhat
  • 00:00:20
relevance is because I work for an
  • 00:00:22
independent used electric car dealer in
  • 00:00:26
London but my boss does not get to see
  • 00:00:28
this video before it goes out and I have
  • 00:00:30
no stake in the business so
  • 00:00:32
realistically it is what it is I thought
  • 00:00:34
I would just comment on the situation to
  • 00:00:37
understand how we got into this mess we
  • 00:00:38
need to rewind all the way back to 2015
  • 00:00:41
    when Porsche first announced their
  • 00:00:43
    thoughts on electrification with the
  • 00:00:45
mission e concept which was the
  • 00:00:47
predecessor for the takan and it really
  • 00:00:50
took the car World by storm because this
  • 00:00:52
    normally regarded traditional
  • 00:00:53
manufacturer with a very rich history in
  • 00:00:56
    combustion engines has committed to
  • 00:00:58
    electrifying most of their Fleet
  • 00:01:01
especially with the focus on the mass
  • 00:01:03
Market models yet despite those facts
  • 00:01:06
the enthusiasts loved What Porsche came
  • 00:01:09
up with number one the car looked
  • 00:01:12
amazing it had the looks of a Porsche
  • 00:01:14
and the company promised that it would
  • 00:01:16
have the character and the feel of a
  • 00:01:18
Porsche as well on the electric side of
  • 00:01:21
things Porsche was really pushing the
  • 00:01:23
boundaries it was the first vision of a
  • 00:01:25
car to be announced with an 800 volt
  • 00:01:27
    battery architecture which is basically
  • 00:01:30
double the voltage of any other car like
  • 00:01:32
Teslas which were on the market at that
  • 00:01:35
time the goal of all of this technology
  • 00:01:37
was to deliver extremely fast charging
  • 00:01:39
supporting up to 350 KW of peak power
  • 00:01:42
being able to recharge 80% of the
  • 00:01:45
battery in under 20 minutes and also for
  • 00:01:48
    repeatable performance unlike some
  • 00:01:51
electric cars which would overheat after
  • 00:01:52
a couple of launches force was really
  • 00:01:54
    targeting consistent truck performance
  • 00:01:57
and to be fair to them they pretty much
  • 00:01:59
delivered in 2019 some of the specs had
  • 00:02:02
to be slightly compromised to get the
  • 00:02:04
vehicle onto the market the peak
  • 00:02:06
charging performance was just under 300
  • 00:02:08
Kow but still super impressive and it
  • 00:02:12
really became the Benchmark in the
  • 00:02:14
    segment and most importantly people
  • 00:02:17
actually loved it and not just on paper
  • 00:02:19
the order books started filling in not
  • 00:02:22
even a year later 2020 rolls around and
  • 00:02:24
we all know how that went with the covid
  • 00:02:27
pandemic this created a very interesting
  • 00:02:30
situation in the car market initially
  • 00:02:33
people were a little bit skeptical
  • 00:02:34
cutting back on expenses because the
  • 00:02:36
world was in a very uncertain state but
  • 00:02:40
    as everything started returning somewhat
  • 00:02:43
back to normal people really started
  • 00:02:44
getting back into using cars instead of
  • 00:02:47
public transport for example to stay
  • 00:02:49
safe and isolated from everyone else on
  • 00:02:52
top of that we had various government
  • 00:02:53
    support schemes to keep businesses
  • 00:02:55
afloat so there was a lot of kind of
  • 00:02:58
free covid money flowing about and lots
  • 00:03:01
of directors decided that they would
  • 00:03:03
treat themselves to an electric car
  • 00:03:05
because it also came with a lot of other
  • 00:03:07
tax benefits however on the supply end
  • 00:03:10
    the story was completely different
  • 00:03:12
Porsche was struggling to make enough
  • 00:03:15
take accounts because there was the
  • 00:03:17
semiconductor shortage caused by just a
  • 00:03:19
few of the world's biggest factories for
  • 00:03:21
computer chips being shut down during
  • 00:03:24
the worst waves of Co but it was enough
  • 00:03:27
to trip up the supply for basically
  • 00:03:29
every piece of consumer electronics in
  • 00:03:32
the world you can imagine and to further
  • 00:03:34
exacerbate the problem in 2021 in the UK
  • 00:03:38
we were hit by the fuel shortages it's a
  • 00:03:40
very complicated reason why did happen
  • 00:03:42
there were multiple factors we've got
  • 00:03:44
    the geopolitical situation in Ukraine
  • 00:03:46
Brewing up we had a shortage of delivery
  • 00:03:49
drivers to deliver fuel to petrol
  • 00:03:51
stations Etc so naturally the prices of
  • 00:03:54
petrol and Diesel at the pump are
  • 00:03:56
    continuing to go up further
  • 00:03:58
    incentivizing people to jump into
  • 00:04:00
electric especially if they want to keep
  • 00:04:03
on driving this really is economics 101
  • 00:04:06
you've got low Supply yet increasingly
  • 00:04:09
high demand so electric car sales are
  • 00:04:13
doing great Porsche is loving it but
  • 00:04:15
Porsche customers don't find this too
  • 00:04:17
shocking with some high-end models of
  • 00:04:19
Porsches it's quite normal that you put
  • 00:04:22
your name down on a waiting list and it
  • 00:04:24
may take a year or two for you to
  • 00:04:26
actually receive that car but naturally
  • 00:04:29
this means that it's slowly creeping the
  • 00:04:32
prices up and despite the takon being
  • 00:04:34
meant as more of a mass market car
  • 00:04:37
compared to something like your exotic
  • 00:04:39
versions of the 9911 it still means that
  • 00:04:42
you stons and quite honestly most EVS in
  • 00:04:45
general were going on the market for
  • 00:04:48
over list price ultimately the proof is
  • 00:04:51
in the numbers and in 2021 the take can
  • 00:04:54
officially outsold dead iconic 911 so
  • 00:04:58
everything was going great for Porsche
  • 00:05:00
and it seemed like this electrification
  • 00:05:02
    strategy was working
  • 00:05:04
    perfectly however everything starts to
  • 00:05:07
change in 2022 and 2023 after the
  • 00:05:11
initial waves of covid and the lockdowns
  • 00:05:14
everything is starting to return back to
  • 00:05:15
normal and that includes the supply of
  • 00:05:18
computer chips and eventually that kind
  • 00:05:21
of surge of demand which was there in
  • 00:05:23
2021 gets caught up with and we are back
  • 00:05:26
to being in balance with supply versus
  • 00:05:29
    demand
  • 00:05:30
of course this isn't just the case for
  • 00:05:31
Porsche but for most car manufacturers
  • 00:05:34
    and electronics manufacturers so people
  • 00:05:36
suddenly have a lot more Choice when
  • 00:05:39
they are shopping around for their next
  • 00:05:41
    vehicle next up electricity became
  • 00:05:43
expensive do you remember how I
  • 00:05:45
mentioned that in 2021 there were the
  • 00:05:48
fuel shortages well this also affected
  • 00:05:50
natural gas but the way it works in the
  • 00:05:54
UK is that the electricity prices are
  • 00:05:57
dictated by gas pric prices to a large
  • 00:06:00
extent and that's because even though a
  • 00:06:02
significant portion of our grid is now
  • 00:06:04
run by Renewables gas is still used
  • 00:06:07
primarily to balance the grid and hence
  • 00:06:10
has a strong impact on the final price
  • 00:06:12
per kilowatt hour however because of the
  • 00:06:15
wholesale rates and how the businesses
  • 00:06:16
work on the back end and how everything
  • 00:06:18
gets passed onto the customer but with
  • 00:06:21
multiple steps in between there is a
  • 00:06:25
    monthlong delay between the wholesale
  • 00:06:28
prices of fossil fu fuels and when that
  • 00:06:31
    translates into increased or decreased
  • 00:06:34
electricity prices so fossil fuels or
  • 00:06:37
petrol diesel natural gas used to be
  • 00:06:40
    expensive electricity was cheap
  • 00:06:42
everybody flued to EVS but suddenly the
  • 00:06:46
price of fossil fuels stabilized it
  • 00:06:48
started coming down but that Peak was
  • 00:06:51
now starting to manifest itself in 20122
  • 00:06:54
and 2023 in the price of electricity
  • 00:06:58
skyrocketing as a imagine if the cost of
  • 00:07:00
how much you pay for electricity has
  • 00:07:01
doubled in the recent months you are not
  • 00:07:05
exactly going to be Keen to run out and
  • 00:07:07
buy an electric car especially now that
  • 00:07:09
the price of petrol and Diesel have
  • 00:07:11
dropped and for the people who already
  • 00:07:13
had the electric cars and especially the
  • 00:07:15
tons and wanted to get all over the
  • 00:07:17
country they were stuck with another
  • 00:07:20
    problem which was the lacking
  • 00:07:21
infrastructure there was meant to be a
  • 00:07:24
    lot of expansion happening throughout
  • 00:07:26
2021 2022 but just like the supply
  • 00:07:30
    shortages affected Vehicles it also
  • 00:07:32
    affected the charging equipment
  • 00:07:35
    manufacturers which means that charging
  • 00:07:37
providers here in the UK had plans to
  • 00:07:41
install the Chargers but there was
  • 00:07:42
nothing to install and likewise there
  • 00:07:45
was a lot of planning application and
  • 00:07:47
admin processes which were meant to be
  • 00:07:49
complete but many people were now
  • 00:07:51
working from home which obviously took
  • 00:07:53
    the government completely by surprise
  • 00:07:56
and we were not ready for it so
  • 00:07:57
    everything got massively delayed
  • 00:08:00
which what I'm trying to say meant that
  • 00:08:02
people really had to put up with
  • 00:08:04
inadequate infrastructure so if you had
  • 00:08:06
to travel up and down the country you
  • 00:08:07
had no choice but to share the very few
  • 00:08:09
    Chargers which were operational between
  • 00:08:12
the influx of EV drivers who were now on
  • 00:08:15
the road because electricity was cheap
  • 00:08:17
and actually available to get you places
  • 00:08:19
in 2021 as I mentioned this more or less
  • 00:08:21
affected all electric cars but you have
  • 00:08:23
to keep in mind the take on specifically
  • 00:08:25
is a high performance luxury Saloon and
  • 00:08:30
all of those things in the UK Market are
  • 00:08:32
kind of wrong not that many people can
  • 00:08:35
afford luxury cars especially ones which
  • 00:08:37
are high performance because that by and
  • 00:08:40
    large translates to expensive servicing
  • 00:08:43
and Skyhigh Insurance prices and it's a
  • 00:08:46
saloon which has historically been a
  • 00:08:49
shrinking segment especially in the last
  • 00:08:51
decade this means that as they are
  • 00:08:53
starting to trickle onto the used Market
  • 00:08:56
there's not much appetite and keep in
  • 00:08:58
mind it's a first generation Porsche
  • 00:09:01
electric car and I wouldn't even focus
  • 00:09:03
on the electric bit a first generation
  • 00:09:05
of any brand new platform will have its
  • 00:09:08
problems and the take can especially in
  • 00:09:09
the early days there were quite a few
  • 00:09:11
recalls a lot of them software based but
  • 00:09:13
it just showed that the product wasn't
  • 00:09:16
quite fully baked and ready for Mass
  • 00:09:18
markets so what's the result used car
  • 00:09:21
market which is not necessarily full of
  • 00:09:23
undesirable cars but cars which are
  • 00:09:26
unsuitable for most buyers in Market but
  • 00:09:30
let's Zoom back out and let's compare
  • 00:09:32
the situation with Tesla because like
  • 00:09:33
the brand or not they are a massive
  • 00:09:36
player and basically Benchmark in the EV
  • 00:09:38
game and as you probably know Tesla does
  • 00:09:41
most things a little bit differently to
  • 00:09:43
    most manufacturers they have been
  • 00:09:45
steadily increasing the list price of
  • 00:09:47
their vehicles during the years when
  • 00:09:50
everything was going great but then as
  • 00:09:53
everything came to a stop Tesla took the
  • 00:09:56
radical action to slash thousands of
  • 00:09:58
    pounds off of their price
  • 00:10:00
    basically overnight without any prayer
  • 00:10:02
announcements as you can imagine this
  • 00:10:04
caused a lot of uproar but again it goes
  • 00:10:08
back to the basics of supply and demand
  • 00:10:11
and with Tesla not relying on dealers to
  • 00:10:14
kind of negotiate prices with the End
  • 00:10:16
customer they had to do this on their
  • 00:10:18
end centrally it very much was a method
  • 00:10:21
of ripping the Band-Aid off instantly
  • 00:10:24
and as you can imagine many owners who
  • 00:10:26
bought the vehicles the day before at
  • 00:10:27
the almost 10,000 pounds higher price
  • 00:10:30
we're not exactly delighted but you have
  • 00:10:33
to keep in mind who buys vehicles in
  • 00:10:36
which way in the UK if you're paying out
  • 00:10:39
right the chances are you're planning to
  • 00:10:41
keep the car long term and while
  • 00:10:44
obviously it's nice to save the
  • 00:10:47
significant thousands of pounds if you
  • 00:10:49
measure the difference per year over a
  • 00:10:52
lifespan of 10 years for example it
  • 00:10:55
doesn't make that much of a difference
  • 00:10:58
the people who were actually mostly
  • 00:11:00
upset were the finance companies because
  • 00:11:03
suddenly if you were on a 2 three four
  • 00:11:06
year PCP or on a fixed term lease it
  • 00:11:10
meant that the residual value of the
  • 00:11:12
vehicle was suddenly much much lower and
  • 00:11:14
that really manifests itself in these
  • 00:11:16
shorter term agreements either way we
  • 00:11:18
can have an endless discussion about
  • 00:11:20
whether this is moral and the correct
  • 00:11:22
thing to do from the company's
  • 00:11:24
perspective but in the end it worked as
  • 00:11:27
you probably know no public publicity is
  • 00:11:30
bad publicity and these massive price
  • 00:11:32
Cuts got the word out there onto the
  • 00:11:34
cover page of pretty much every single
  • 00:11:37
    newspaper which worked as free
  • 00:11:39
advertising and people who really wanted
  • 00:11:41
to get into EVS for various other
  • 00:11:44
reasons whether that be tax reasons
  • 00:11:46
    environmental reasons or they simply
  • 00:11:48
wanted the latest and greatest in the
  • 00:11:51
world of Car Technology but couldn't the
  • 00:11:53
four one before suddenly had the
  • 00:11:54
opportunity to get their hands on one
  • 00:11:56
brand new one for much cheaper than
  • 00:11:59
before so that was fantastic news and it
  • 00:12:01
really stimulated demand and it meant
  • 00:12:04
that there was no dip in sales I do
  • 00:12:07
appreciate while we are still not
  • 00:12:09
talking about a truly Mass Market
  • 00:12:11
affordable car they were within the
  • 00:12:13
means of most middle class families who
  • 00:12:16
would be otherwise buying for BMWs
  • 00:12:18
Mercedes or Audi products so unlike the
  • 00:12:21
    high-end Porche Stans definitely
  • 00:12:23
attainable for a large portion of the UK
  • 00:12:26
population who would be buying a new
  • 00:12:28
vehicle anyway Porche took a very
  • 00:12:30
different view on the matter because
  • 00:12:32
they really got stuck between a rock and
  • 00:12:35
a hard place as I mentioned earlier they
  • 00:12:38
    had this massive electrification
  • 00:12:39
strategy to move most of their
  • 00:12:42
    mainstream lineup into electric power
  • 00:12:45
within basically the next couple of
  • 00:12:47
years and remember how I mentioned in
  • 00:12:49
the beginning of the video that they
  • 00:12:51
take on outsold the iconic 911 that may
  • 00:12:54
sound like fantastic news and it really
  • 00:12:57
is a big achievement for a car
  • 00:12:59
Enthusiast brand to do so well with an
  • 00:13:01
electric model but these days even
  • 00:13:04
though you may think of Porsche as a
  • 00:13:05
sports car brand they really are not
  • 00:13:08
that's the minority of Porsche sales the
  • 00:13:11
majority are two models which were ahead
  • 00:13:13
of the takon and that's the mean and the
  • 00:13:16
Ken so realistically Porsche these days
  • 00:13:18
is an SUV company so there was a lot
  • 00:13:21
riding on the success of this Maan which
  • 00:13:24
meant that Porsche was slowly setting up
  • 00:13:26
to reposition the takon as the high end
  • 00:13:29
    luxury technology Flagship whereas Maan
  • 00:13:32
would be the more affordable Mouse
  • 00:13:33
Market model which would slot directly
  • 00:13:35
underneath it which unfortunately in the
  • 00:13:37
short term meant that a car which wasn't
  • 00:13:41
    particularly popular was
  • 00:13:42
    counterintuitively getting slow but
  • 00:13:44
consistent price increases to be fair it
  • 00:13:47
worked the mechan is now live fully
  • 00:13:51
announced and you can place an order for
  • 00:13:53
one in fact I done a detailed video
  • 00:13:55
going over the configurator and if
  • 00:13:57
you're in the market for one which
  • 00:13:59
options I would recommend picking for
  • 00:14:01
    the best overall experience without
  • 00:14:03
going completely crazy with the price as
  • 00:14:05
you know with most German cars there's
  • 00:14:07
plenty of options to choose from I will
  • 00:14:08
leave that link in the top right hand
  • 00:14:10
corner if you want to learn more about
  • 00:14:12
it but it's now a very suitable option
  • 00:14:15
for the people who are actually in the
  • 00:14:17
market for an electric Porsche there's
  • 00:14:20
also the new takon facelift which
  • 00:14:22
addresses most of the criticisms namely
  • 00:14:25
poor efficiency resulting in poor range
  • 00:14:28
of the first generation model but for
  • 00:14:30
most people that's not enough because
  • 00:14:32
it's the mean which really starts
  • 00:14:34
selling in high numbers we are at that
  • 00:14:38
point where deliveries are about to
  • 00:14:39
start happening but the order books are
  • 00:14:41
full according to Porsche and the demand
  • 00:14:44
has been really really strong not
  • 00:14:46
surprising as I mentioned the mecan
  • 00:14:49
petrol and diesels were very good
  • 00:14:51
selling vehicles for their segment and
  • 00:14:54
price point and the mechan electric is
  • 00:14:56
no different and even if you forget
  • 00:14:58
about about the ice versions these means
  • 00:15:02
are just a better car compared to the
  • 00:15:04
takan for the vast majority of people
  • 00:15:07
who are in the market for a Porsche they
  • 00:15:10
offer a bigger battery than the standard
  • 00:15:13
takan which results in more range they
  • 00:15:16
come with the all-wheel drive system as
  • 00:15:18
    standard unlike the first generation
  • 00:15:19
take on they are very well equipped and
  • 00:15:22
they happen to be cheaper so there
  • 00:15:24
really is not much of a reason to go for
  • 00:15:26
the takon unless you want the sportiest
  • 00:15:29
    or the most technologically advanced
  • 00:15:31
model in Porsches lineup however let's
  • 00:15:34
be honest most people are not buying
  • 00:15:35
these cars because of those reasons it's
  • 00:15:38
literally just a very tax efficient way
  • 00:15:42
to get a nice premium luxurious vehicle
  • 00:15:45
especially if you own a business while
  • 00:15:47
being reasonably cheap to run on the
  • 00:15:49
fuel and service side of things
  • 00:15:51
naturally this pushes use take on prices
  • 00:15:54
really really low and the depreciation
  • 00:15:56
looks terrible in theory but before jump
  • 00:15:59
into the conclusion about Porsche let's
  • 00:16:01
look at other electric cars because they
  • 00:16:03
didn't have it easy but they didn't
  • 00:16:05
appreciate quite as badly as these tans
  • 00:16:08
in my eyes as I mentioned multiple times
  • 00:16:11
in the last few minutes it all comes
  • 00:16:13
down to the suitability of the vehicle
  • 00:16:15
for the market yes the takan looks
  • 00:16:18
amazing but it's not what people are
  • 00:16:20
shopping for because yes even though the
  • 00:16:22
Teslas and the scod encs and Nissan Aras
  • 00:16:26
have dropped in value people people are
  • 00:16:29
after these versatile family sized SUV
  • 00:16:33
crossover things as long as they can do
  • 00:16:36
decent range of 200 plus miles on a
  • 00:16:38
charge which most of them can and of
  • 00:16:40
course Teslas especially had the added
  • 00:16:42
benefit of the quite reliable and
  • 00:16:44
    already well-built out supercharger
  • 00:16:46
Network so it was unaffected by the slow
  • 00:16:48
roll out of the public charging
  • 00:16:50
    infrastructure that doesn't mean that
  • 00:16:52
depreciation wasn't the thing for other
  • 00:16:53
EVS there was a huge price adjustment
  • 00:16:56
but what it feels like to me is that
  • 00:16:57
there was that price adjustment and now
  • 00:16:59
we are back to normal where yes electric
  • 00:17:02
cars depreciate but that's just like
  • 00:17:05
what they used to be for any car before
  • 00:17:07
the pandemic of course you would know
  • 00:17:09
that if you drive off any new car of the
  • 00:17:12
lot it loses a significant chunk of its
  • 00:17:15
value right there and then and the
  • 00:17:18
depreciation gets a little bit more
  • 00:17:20
stable as the years go on but now it's
  • 00:17:23
more important than ever to realize that
  • 00:17:24
L price does not mean anything with
  • 00:17:28
Tesla the prices are fixed but even then
  • 00:17:30
you have got the option of buying new
  • 00:17:33
inventory cars and there you can see
  • 00:17:36
that Tesla is starting to do price
  • 00:17:38
adjustments like what we are used to
  • 00:17:40
seeing from normal car dealer groups so
  • 00:17:43
what realistically matters is the price
  • 00:17:45
you pay for the car versus what is going
  • 00:17:47
to be worth in a few years time rather
  • 00:17:49
than the lovely High MSRP which nobody
  • 00:17:52
is buying these cars at to illustrate
  • 00:17:54
the situation with some numbers let me
  • 00:17:56
actually get my iPad and we can look
  • 00:17:58
look at the most popular used buying
  • 00:18:01
site in the UK which is auto trader
  • 00:18:03
everybody uses it and it's a very good
  • 00:18:05
indicator of what is actually available
  • 00:18:08
in the market and wisely Automotive we
  • 00:18:11
sell a lot of BMW i3s we absolutely love
  • 00:18:14
them and even though that car is
  • 00:18:16
discontinued now if we filter just for
  • 00:18:18
the full electric ones there is 533 of
  • 00:18:22
them available in total to put it into
  • 00:18:25
context with the afor mentioned takon if
  • 00:18:28
we go into Porsche and filter the tons
  • 00:18:31
    out there's
  • 00:18:34
776 of them yes you heard it right
  • 00:18:37
there's fewer of those little i3s which
  • 00:18:39
are very Marmite cars have been made in
  • 00:18:43
huge numbers and over a long time span
  • 00:18:46
compared to the take on which have only
  • 00:18:48
been on the market for a few years yes
  • 00:18:50
the I3 is technically discontinued so
  • 00:18:52
let's use a different example which is
  • 00:18:55
for example the skoda enyak a very
  • 00:18:59
popular SUV in the VW group only 370 of
  • 00:19:04
those on the market so it really just
  • 00:19:06
highlights that the take on is not
  • 00:19:09
really suitable for most buyers or at
  • 00:19:12
least most buyers are not aware of how
  • 00:19:14
affordably they can be bought on the
  • 00:19:16
used market and they simply dismiss them
  • 00:19:19
thinking that they are this Ultra
  • 00:19:21
luxurious EV which they won't be able to
  • 00:19:23
afford in case you have been actually
  • 00:19:24
    following theisle Automotive Channel you
  • 00:19:26
may have realized we used to have a
  • 00:19:28
Porsche Stan which was our director's
  • 00:19:31
car but it didn't quite work out
  • 00:19:34
perfectly for us he wasn't fully happy
  • 00:19:36
with it so we sold it and as if by sheer
  • 00:19:39
luck it was sold to a different Trader
  • 00:19:42
while the values were still high
  • 00:19:45
obviously it would have looked very
  • 00:19:47
different if it was sold about half year
  • 00:19:49
to a year later because a lot of money
  • 00:19:51
would have been lost on it but this way
  • 00:19:53
it worked out fine for us we haven't
  • 00:19:55
been stung and in fact it's now that we
  • 00:19:59
are really starting into getting these
  • 00:20:02
tans in stock once in a while they are
  • 00:20:04
still a pretty unique car it's important
  • 00:20:07
to look for the right examples it's not
  • 00:20:08
something for me to really discuss in
  • 00:20:10
this video but we are selling them we
  • 00:20:14
occasionally have them in stock and in
  • 00:20:15
fact the last two ones we had have sold
  • 00:20:18
fairly quickly and we haven't lost money
  • 00:20:21
on them which is what you would expect a
  • 00:20:22
business to do so it's not all bad but
  • 00:20:26
bely is not my business so it's none of
  • 00:20:28
my business to discuss these numbers in
  • 00:20:30
further detail do to take this as
  • 00:20:32
Financial advice it's only up to you to
  • 00:20:34
decide you know what you value most in a
  • 00:20:37
car and when you're shopping ground Etc
  • 00:20:40
but if you are relying on depreciation
  • 00:20:44
to below to squeeze out maximum lifespan
  • 00:20:47
of a car without it costing much it's a
  • 00:20:50
huge Gumble especially in the luxury car
  • 00:20:53
market not necessarily just EV should I
  • 00:20:56
remind you about the BMW M3 touring
  • 00:20:58
situation you know they were going for
  • 00:20:59
crazy prices and while they are still
  • 00:21:02
high they have definitely started coming
  • 00:21:04
down and stabilizing likewise on the
  • 00:21:06
lower end of the spectrum you had the
  • 00:21:08
Toyota Garis which were crazy popular
  • 00:21:11
and high demand at some point but now as
  • 00:21:13
Toyota has really started pushing them
  • 00:21:16
out in greater numbers the residual
  • 00:21:19
values have started coming down as well
  • 00:21:21
so it's not like depreciation suddenly
  • 00:21:23
only magically affects EVs and nothing
  • 00:21:26
else in the market it's the conditions
  • 00:21:28
which can change fairly quickly and I'm
  • 00:21:30
afraid that's the reality of it there's
  • 00:21:32
nothing an individual can do however
  • 00:21:35
with everything you have heard you
  • 00:21:37
actually have looked on auto trader and
  • 00:21:39
you started seeing that there are some
  • 00:21:41
Bargains to be had on these stay counts
  • 00:21:44
and you want to go ahead but you're not
  • 00:21:47
quite sure how I think it all depends on
  • 00:21:50
what electric porge you're looking for
  • 00:21:52
and how you are planning to run it and
  • 00:21:54
buy it obviously if you're looking for
  • 00:21:57
new ones then I would High recommend
  • 00:21:59
looking at the mean it seems like very
  • 00:22:01
good value for money especially if you
  • 00:22:03
need a car which is not just a
  • 00:22:05
director's car to drive up in down the
  • 00:22:06
country but also to carry kids to school
  • 00:22:10
have a dog in the boot Etc if you are
  • 00:22:12
after the take on which are now very
  • 00:22:14
good value for money on the used Market
  • 00:22:17
especially if you're planning to buy
  • 00:22:19
outright this is not consumer advice
  • 00:22:21
this is what I would do if I had the
  • 00:22:23
money I don't have the money at the
  • 00:22:24
moment but I would definitely consider
  • 00:22:27
buying one outright especially if you're
  • 00:22:29
planning to keep it long term with the
  • 00:22:32
only caveat being maybe look into
  • 00:22:36
extending the Porsche warranty on it
  • 00:22:38
because it's a Porsche and some of the
  • 00:22:40
spare parts can get quite expensive and
  • 00:22:42
    as I mentioned it's a first generation
  • 00:22:44
product so they can fail seemingly
  • 00:22:47
randomly if you're planning to just dip
  • 00:22:49
your toes into the electric wall and you
  • 00:22:51
want to see how the ranges whether you
  • 00:22:54
can run on longer trips using the public
  • 00:22:56
    charging infrastructure how much it
  • 00:22:57
would cost ET ET then something like a
  • 00:23:00
short-term lease or a PCP are obviously
  • 00:23:03
fantastic options because with a lease
  • 00:23:06
you have got a fixed monthly cost you
  • 00:23:08
don't care PCP is something in between
  • 00:23:11
where yes you do pay a monthly figure
  • 00:23:12
and at the end you can decide whether
  • 00:23:14
you keep the car or you hand it back to
  • 00:23:16
the finance company for basically what's
  • 00:23:18
guaranteed the residual value in the
  • 00:23:20
form of the last balloon payment to be
